25.01.2022 Thrilled to announce Warehouse Greenhouse has won the 2020 Sustainability Award for Single Dwelling (Alternation). Warehouse Greenhouse is built to Passivhaus standards, is extremely air-tight with only 1.2 air changes per hour, and uses passive solar design to maximise sun penetration in winter and shade the interiors in summer. It has a highly thermally efficient envelope, is cross-ventilated and harnesses the existing buildings thermal mass. It has high performance, do...uble glazed tilt-and-turn windows, which were installed inside the existing glazed openings essentially adding a third layer of glazing with a large cavity (making this a triple glazed dwelling). Incredibly, there is no active heating or cooling in this residence, instead, it solely relies on the tight thermal envelope and the HRV system. Materiality took precedence over form and ethics came before aesthetics. Remnants of the existing building are preserved and expressed revealing its imperfections and years of layered wear. 24.01.2022 99 Designs, the conversion of a heritage building into an office for a young design based company saw the insertion of two acoustically treated, steel-framed pods divide the 750m2 office plate into programmatic zones, allowing the industrial space to retain its openness while providing the spatial & acoustic separation necessary. Borrowing from the industrial character this fit out is a manifestation of Breathe’s ideology of simplicity and functionality. 23.01.2022 It’s New Year’s Eve and our #top9 has us reflecting on what a year it's been. The bushfires kicked the year off to a bad start and the pandemic made it worse. But we feel really lucky to have had some great highlights along the way, including: 1. The incredible commitment from the Architecture community to go Carbon Neutral in 2020. 2. Amidst the devastation caused by the terrible bushfires the community response and outpouring of support was deeply heartening. 3. Next genera...tion Breathe team member, baby Penny arrived and saw us cement our new Family Policy with initiatives around flexibility, child care contributions, cloth nappy subscriptions and paid support to keep in touch with the studio. 4. Nightingale Ballarat by Breathe; planning approved and under construction. 5. Bardolph Gardens; Sustainable rental properties done right. 6. Warehouse Greenhouse looked great on the cover of @greenmagazine. 7+8. All the love for Edgars Creek House, a home that truly connects to nature. 9. Arkadia, the amazing collaboration with @dko_architecture and @oculusstudios, a signal to a carbon free future. 21.01.2022 AA Prize for Unbuilt is back and we're delighted to be one the shortlisted entries for the Queen Victoria Market Garden, a most excellent collaboration with @_openwork, @joostbakker and Breathe Architecture. A competition run by The City of Melbourne asked for a temporary pavilion that would house market stall holders, engage with the street and keep the life blood of the market’s street-trading alive during the refurbishment of the entire Queen Victoria Markets. The solution... instead became about harvesting the markets organic waste and using it as nutrient rich fertiliser to grow food on site through an off-the-shelf greenhouse system. The idea of closing the loop and growing food locally eliminates the generation of carbon emissions from transport and refrigeration, while simultaneously reducing the multi-million-dollar waste bill from the market. It would be an educational tool for schools and tour groups about urban agriculture, food security and sustainability. Winner of the Melbourne Design Competition, Market Garden was set to begin construction before an interim Heritage order halted progress. Designed to be their global headquarters, Slack were after a space that had legacy and permanence, but still showcased the company’s playful nature. Weighty, solid materials like fluted concrete, slate tiles, brass bench tops, and black stained timber were chosen to represent this.
