25.01.2022 BLACKHEADS VS SEBACEOUS FILAMENTS Guess What.... not every little "blocked pore" on your nose is a blackhead. More often than not, they are actually something called sebaceous filaments. WHAT ARE SEBACEOUS FILAMENTS?... Sebaceous filaments are a completely normal part of the skin structure which line the pores to help guide your oil to the surface of the skin and keep it hydrated. While you might try your hardest to extract the light yellow/grey dots, they will naturally refill within 30 days because they are a part of your pore structure. They can become more noticeable when there is an increase in oil flow or your pores are stretched. WHAT ARE BLACKHEADS? Blackheads are usually black in colour and are a combination of oil, dead skin cells and debris that have hardened into a 'plug' and turn dark due to oxidisation. These are usually much easier to extract than sebaceous filaments and can be kept at bay with the correct skincare products. HOW DO I TREAT THEM? Sebacous filaments usually go unnoticed unless you have oilier skin or larger pores. To keep pores healthy and free of build up we recommend products that utilise Salicylic Acid like our @ocosmedics Corrective Cleanser & Peel or our @ocosmedics Potent Clearing Serum.
