25.01.2022 Jean Morgan Born 1925 Manly Vale Jean used to be an English teacher during her career. Of course, no surprise, talking with Jean, you could really tell how bright and intelligent she was. Jean loved to people-watch. She would often come into Manly with her book, grab herself a coffee, and just watch the people walk on by. Jean and I both shared this fascination with people-watching. I could find myself sitting in an airport all day long, wondering where everyone is going and... what they are doing. I would spot the beautiful Jean Morgan on our regular holidays to Manly on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. On one occasion, I passed Jean in a little laneway not far from Manly Beach, and just had to take a photo of her! Jean was so vibrant and had such a welcoming smile. I especially loved the purse she was carrying, a real 80’s style toiletry bag. Jean used to be an English teacher during her career. Of course, no surprise, talking with Jean, you could really tell how bright and intelligent she was. Jean loved to people-watch. She would often come into Manly with her book, grab herself a coffee, and just watch the people walk on by. Jean and I both shared this fascination with people-watching. I could find myself sitting in an airport all day long, wondering where everyone is going and what they are doing. Only recently I phoned Jean to say hello and see how she was going. It was really great to chat with her again. Jean sounded just the same, she is still very independent for 94 years old and still attending church every Sunday. 23.01.2022 Elizabeth Smith Born 1930 The Rock NSW . Be glad for what is passed to you in the way of freedom, clothes & food!... When I asked Elizabeth about what her inspiration & secret to living life to the fullest as she told me that she hadn’t ever really thought about it and went on to say, Everyone has their ups & downs and having to roll with the good and the bad and We just do, make the best of what is passed to us. According to Elizabeth she couldn’t do without daylight The Sun, today is a gift, it is cool, but it is sunny, and her favourite music is the hymn ‘All things bright & beautiful’. And I suppose these both ties in perfectly. My final question to Elizabeth was If you had your life over again what would you change and without hesitation, she strongly shook her head and responded nothing. What a perfect way to reflect on your life, one of no regrets. The home was tucked away behind a grove of trees, and there was a coolness to the air from all the shade being cast, thankfully when it was time for me to shoot some photos the sun managed to poke its way through. Born in Newcastle in 1930, Elizabeth went on to become a teacher, married her husband Arthur Charles and together they had 2 children, Greg & Erica. The most memorable time of her life was during her time at Teachers College and her subsequent graduation. 19.01.2022 Ella Simmonds Born 1928 Crowfoot Still got my licence, I drive not a worry!... The very last stop on our road trip back from Lake Cargelligo, my eldest daughter and I made our way along the back roads to the Crowfoot property. Further back from the road, among the fields, was Ella Simmond’s very familiar weatherboard home. Ella and her sons, Chris and John, run the 4,000-acre farm altogether. They seemed to be a great little team and I could tell that her sons looked up to her very much. Ella’s father Norman came out to Australia by boat in 1907, my father taught me many things she said, but Mum held it altogether. Ella told me that life had been tough right up until she was married. She had lived through the depression, and times got tougher when the drought was bad. At one point, her father thought he would have to sell the property. But Ella said she still wouldn’t change a thing, I am very satisfied with my life she said. For her, the last 20 years had been the best years in Australia. Ella has lived at the Crowfoot property for 65 years now, and I was told she still milks the cow there. Farming has always been in my system she told me, and to think at her age she was still working this hard, I take my hat off to her! 18.01.2022 Roslyn Maddrell Born 1927 Braidwood, NSW. Remember, there is always good in everybody.... Originally born in Melbourne and now living in Braidwood NSW, was the beautiful Roslyn Maddrell. Roslyn was a real bubbly lady, so full of life! She had known my own grandmother well. A grandmother herself, Roslyn had 4 children, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. When she first moved to Braidwood, she nursed in the hospital for 3 months. When I asked Roslyn about the most rebellious thing she had done, she said, nursingOh I bent all the rules, and still do!. Roslyn had spent many years travelling overseas and those were some of the most memorable times of her life. But according to Roslyn, the 50s and 60s were the best years, more relaxed she told me, not much money but we all entertained at home. We spoke about her parents and what lessons they had taught her as a child, not get into any debtif we couldn’t pay it, we couldn’t have it!. Roslyn believes that life these days is so programmed and materialistic, and although she would change a lot of things about her past, you gotta count your blessings! she told me. 11.01.2022 Jean McInnes Born 1941 Lake Cargelligo, NSW Just have faith. I sit at the farm and look at heaven.... Overlooking the spectacular Lake Cargelligo in the Central West region of NSW, I met the darling Jean McInnes. Floorboards throughout the split-level house, the smell of cooking in the air Jean was so sweet, boiling her teapot on the stove with homemade biscuits waiting. Her home brought back a lot of memories of my childhood home in Braidwood. Jean had moved to Lake Cargelligo back in 1953. By 2010, Jean told me that the lake had been entirely empty! Lake Cargelligo is still a great place to live, everything around town is improvingexcept for my house, she said as she smiled. Jean believes the secret to living a full life is keeping active. Jean still works half days at the tourist information centre. She loved volunteering when she could and spent many years playing the organ for weddings and service every week! Jean has a heart of gold; she was another special lady who reminded me of my grandmother. She was just so welcoming and so comfortable to talk to. The children of this generation could take a lesson out of her book, focusing more on the simplicity of life and what it has to offer. 03.01.2022 Finley Dawe Born 1918 Finley NSW . No takeaway meals in my life-NEVER! ... Still living in his own home, Finley came across as a very proud man. His family was neat, warm and welcoming and had a real retro feel, especially the fantastic original orange floral wallpaper in the kitchen. Finley was born in the town of Finley and seemed disappointed as he explained that you could no longer have a baby in the town. Finley spoke fondly of his childhood and told me My family were so good, they socialised in teams. It was a plain upbringing. My family came here from Port Fairy and moved to Tatura before settling in Finley in 1910. His parents taught him to be ‘well behaved’ & not to start ‘smoking’ or’ drinking’. Finley was married to ‘Enid’ in 1943, and they had three girls. Finley now even has a great-grandchild and remembers the first 20 years of his married life as the best years in Australia. In 1940 Finley was called to the Army, he said- I got a letter on a Thursday and thought I’d better go. He became a part of the Australian Light Horse Brigade, the 20th. He did admit to smoking for two months during the war. The journey to Western Australia to join the Australia Light Horse Brigade was one of Finley’s most memorable moments. He boarded a train at Narrabri, the train had no windows, it was hot, and Finley spent the entire journey, which took 13 days, on a flat top truck, sitting in a ute. Finley’s life philosophy is to live a quiet and very homely life, and he thinks the secret to life is home cooking, No takeaway meals in my life-NEVER! Finley still holds a driver’s license (to drive 10kms), walks a lot and has a ‘gopher’. When I asked Finley if he had his life over again would there be anything he would change he responded with Nothing really, I have had a hard life, sold the farm in 1960? 03.01.2022 Aldo and Marianne Formichi Born 1930 and 1929 Wagga Wagga, NSW Everyone has arguments. Don’t hold a grudge, sleep on it.... The wonderful Formichi couple, Aldo and Marianne. The two of them looked too young to be their age. They were such beautiful hard-working people. Aldo was born in Italy in 1930 and had moved to Australia in 1952 when he was just 22 years old. He met Marianne at an immigration camp and had chatted her up. Marianne was from Germany and had come to Australia in 1954. The two of them have now been married for over 60 years! Aldo’s biggest inspiration in life had been to make money and become a rich Australian. Did you become one? I asked, No, he said and laughed. But it was important for him to work hard and establish himself and create a family. For Aldo’s first job, he unloaded trucks with supplies but was never paid for it. But this clearly didn’t faze him. When I asked what the best years in Australia were, he said as far as I’m concerned, they’re all good. Word hard, good money. Marianne was born in Germany in 1929. She told me how she remembers living on the road side at about 15 or 16 years old. When the Russians came, she was sleeping under a blanket at her mum’s feet. They had been quite poor back then. Her most memorable time was living in England for 5 years, around 1953. When I asked her if there was anything she would change about her life she said crazy Catholics, my family. Her mother used to say remember there is a god.
