25.01.2022 Sun Care Tips for Kids! When enjoying the summer sun this holiday season its important to remember your little ones skin is particularly vulnerable. Remember to use SPF30 (or higher), broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, and apply it regularly.... When applying sunscreen on children, apply a small amount first to test it, and once they are old enough to apply it themselves, encourage them to do so as it fosters independence and responsibility. Its important to remember not to use sunscreen on children under six months. Instead, cover them up in wide-brim hats, UVA and UVB protecting sunglasses, and long-sleeved shirts. Dont let them spend too long in the sun, make sure they take regular breaks in the shade. If youre concerned about sun exposure and a lack of vitamin D, children aged 1-4 can take a daily supplement of 10 micrograms. Outdoor activity and (moderate) sun exposure is all part of your childs healthy development, so be prepared, be safe, but also be active this holiday season!

22.01.2022 Do I need Vaccines before travelling to Bali? Bali is one of the most popular destinations for Aussie tourists, and the overall risks to your health are relatively low. However, before any overseas travel, and as a general precaution, you should ensure that you are up to date on all routine vaccines e.g. MMR, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, chickenpox, polio, and your annual flu vaccine.... For Bali in particular, the main vaccines to consider are Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Hepatitis A can be contracted via contaminated food and water irrespective of where you are staying, and Typhoid can also be contracted this way, particularly if you plan to eat local food and/or stay in smaller cities or rural areas. Other vaccines to consider are Japanese Encephalitis, Malaria and Rabies. Japanese Encephalitis is more important for travellers going to rural areas and planning a stay of over one month, whilst Malaria is best-treated trough avoidance of mosquito bites and preventative prescription medicine. Anyone considering travelling outdoors, working with animals, taking long trips, and children should strongly consider a Rabies vaccination. As this is contracted via animal bites from dogs, bats, and other mammals, anyone likely to spend time in close proximity to animals should consider it as a precaution. Children should also receive a Rabies vaccination, as they are more likely to play with animals, not report bites, and get bitten on their head or neck. 15.01.2022 When to take a child to the GP! As a parent, especially a new one, it can be difficult to fight the temptation to take your child to the GP for every little sniffle and runny nose. Its important to bear in mind that young children will occasionally become upset and cry for periods of time without anything serious being wrong. Over time, you will come to know your childs natural range of emotions and will become adept and picking up when something is off, and when something ...is really off. If youre very concerned, its always best to call Health Direct and get their advice. Generally, the best thing to do is watchful waiting. Do they calm down on their own? Does the problem seem to resolve itself? Has something happened to disrupt their routine that might have caused them to become unusually upset? The majority of complaints that children have will resolve themselves with patience and over the counter medication in a few days. A good tip is to buy a thermometer. That way, if youre concerned about your child you can check them for fever and monitor them as needed. You should take your child to the GP if they are under three months old and have a temperature above 38C, or if they are between three and six months old and have a temperature of 39C or above. Other more serious symptoms to watch for are persistent vomiting, refusal to feed, floppiness or drowsiness. Otherwise, watchful waiting, cuddles, and Panadol will usually do the trick. If you have any questions or concerns, please call (03) 5176 1933 to book an appointment at our clinic today.
