23.01.2022 21.01.2021 FISH FOOTY?! To some up today it would be "MYTH-BUSTED"! For a long time we have assosicated the Trichodesmium (red tides) algae blooms as one that the orca DO NOT LIKE. Almost every time there is a bloom in the hotspot the orcas are absolutely no where to be found! This lead us to believe they did not like the sawdust type algae. Trichodesmium has been known by seamen as Sea Sawdust since the 1700's and is an important part of the marine ecosystem as it contribute...s a large percentage of Nitrogen! Food for other plant and algae matter. Today was no ordinary day! The hotspot was covered in long bloom streaks of the red algae, and the orca, well, they were there too! Right in the thick of it! Trichodesmium streaks would be concentrated full of bacteria, germs and other nasties but these orca didn't appear to mind one bit. Afternoon football anyone? This afternoon we were treated to a footy match, but this was no ordinary game. We were playing by the orcas rules and instead of a football they used juvenile SUNFISH! The small sunfish wouldn't have stood a chance against these athletes. Cookie scored first, but Split Tip was close behind! With a sunfish flicked out of the water, then body slammed seconds later, it was no doubt consumed by the hungry orcas. Small oil slicks were appearing left and right as more orca scored! There were more pelagic fish too, most likely blue-fin tuna! They appeared to be getting eaten and flung out of the water too! El Notcho, Chalky, Oreo and the rest of the crew were all over it. Tail slapping the surface to potentially stun prey or "POW" out of the water the fish came, with an orca following directly behind! The fish weren't safe in OR OUT of the water. An absolute epic show - one that will not be forgotten by the crew anytime soon. Chalky couldn't let us leave without showing off his GIANT dorsal fin. This is now becoming a habit of his. While the rest of the pod are cruising up ahead he comes in for not one, not two but at least THREE close passes. If he was any closer today we could have reached out and touched this beast of a whale. He moves slowly and so so smoothly. Our jaws dropped, but quickly closed again as his fishy-breath was blown onto the boat by the light winds! His stinky breath made the close passes even more memorable. Penguins! On the way in, we took our usual stop at Glasse Island to see the Sea Lions. We always keep a watchful eye out for penguins and today we saw SIX! Six little blue penguins all huddled in the bat cave. Little penguins have an annual moult this time of year, which takes a couple of weeks. While they are moulting they can become distressed as they aren't able to go into the sea! They lose their waterproofing so head to their burrows and fast until their new feathers are oily enough to withstand the sea! https://www.whales-australia.com.au/whale-watch/fish-footy/

21.01.2022 19.03.2021 https://www.whales-australia.com.au/whale-watchi/pink-bits/ PINK BITS The wind was up and it was feeling fresh out in the southern ocean today with an average of 15 knots. It isn't icy-cold yet though, in fact when the suns shining it feels like mid-summer again. An orca filled hotspot meant we were spoilt for choice on encounters. ... First up, Picasso and Patch! Two orca who we haven't observed yet this season, they both have stunning eyepatches which mottle on the trailing edge! Looking very similar we wonder if this is a typical example of phenotype - an observable characteristic from an animals genetics. For example: are they related since their eye patch looks the same. Pilots came charging in from the West! A big group of mum and calves escorted by a handful of large mammals, we were on the feeding zone and they wanted to be there!! With shearwaters and albatrosses in their shadow they filled up the ocean space around our vessel. Our eyes caught sight of something that wasn't quite like the other. A bottlenose dolphin and her calf! Maybe a dolphin-pilot hybrid? It certainly isn't unheard of having mixed species calves. Back with the orca and we were now hanging out with Nibbles and Digby's pods. About this time in 2019 Razor had her calf Blade, so maybe this pod were celebrating her birthday? Blade certainly appeared in good spirits - maybe its all the blue whale blubber making her feel great! She came zooming in past us multiple times, and was causing a ruckus in the pod. While all the other orca were swimming down the swell she was positioned on the surface, in their way. They pushed past her without giving her too much attention, this clearly wasn't her desired outcome so she did it again! An Anatomy Lesson: We didn't ask for it but we certainly got it! A sub-adult, Nibbles and two others appeared right on our stern! Talk about confident bulls... One male slowly rolled onto his side and his raised his head. Mouth now open and tongue out! :P It can be really hard not to attach human emotions and characteristics to orca especially when they act like this. They are mammals after all. The cheeky manoeuvre had us laughing, however he wasn't done showing off. His head sunk back under as his belly button lifted. He did a banana back-bend and it wasn't his pink tongue we were looking at anymore!!! It was his penis! We were now in hysterics! How cheeky!!! Was he showing off to his larger male companions? Or maybe even a sign of submission? Either way he just showed off two of the most vulnerable parts of his body and gave us a full orca anatomy lesson.

20.01.2022 Footage taken onboard our expedition yesterday. The curious and relaxed orca were showing us their softer and gentle side with slow close passes, sitting below the water on our bow and looking up and interacting with our underwater camera on the stern - Blair had to remove it at one point as a 2 year old calf appeared to want to grab it with its mouth!! The tiny calf pictured next to mum is only a few months old! We are so humble that these orca trust us to bring their vulnerable calves so close to our vessel. We can only wonder what she told her calf about us and these are moments we will never forget Footage taken onboard by Blair from sharkyaerials

12.01.2022 20.03.2021 https://www.whales-australia.com.au/whale-/little-dundette/ LITTLE DUNDETTE... What started as an overcast morning turned into an afternoon treat! Split Tip was the first orca sighted today under the cloud covered sky but she didn't stay long. She appeared busy so we took the hint we weren't welcome and moved on. To our delight, 9 orca blows belonged to Nibbles and Digby's pod. These sociable and full of character orcas have been making us laugh over the past few expeditions and we were excited to see what they would get up to today. If you want to see what we mean just take a look at yesterdays blog and photos...! Today they were up to the usual antics. Little Dundette is looking incredibly healthy and full of energy for a couple months of age as her orange tinge fades very quickly! This colouration on the skin dissapears to white as the layer of blubber gets thicker. We are so humbled to be able to not only witness these orca but record their behaviours too. We managed to capture Little Dundette and mum repeat the same behaviour three times in sequence. The cow and calf pair rolled onto their backs, full white belly on show, moved under our vessel from port to starboard! Each time we know we were capturing something special but weren't certain until observing the footage afterwards! This time we were able to capture little dundette nudging and pushing at mums mammory glands trying to secrete milk! I personally have never witnessed such intimate behaviour and feel very privileged that the orca were comfortable enough with us to show the mother and calves special bond. Please see the video from Blair @ SharkyAerials. Not only did we have little Dundette putting on a show but her older sibling couldn't help but nudge the underwater camera! The ever-growing male Digby escorted the pod in for a closer look and on arrival to our stern the youngster appeared to bump and flash its pearly whites at the camera!!! WOW! Just speechless. Naturaliste Charters would like to thank everybody for has come onboard in the past, those who see us through social media and those who continue to support us throughout the season! We love you all and we love sharing our orca interactions with you too! We hope to continue bringing you great orca content throughout the next month.
