25.01.2022 You Now Have an Audience of One Preachers and teachers are used to communicating with an audience sitting in front of them. Online presenters must get used to the idea that they now have an audience of one. An audience of one, watching in front of a small or large screen. When you have a conversation with a friend you naturally look them in the eye. Preachers and teachers are taught to make eye contact with the audience and look around the room at different people. This can ...be a hard habit to break when presenting online. We do this instinctively with people we are interacting face to face. The online presenter must learn to mimic this one to one conversational behaviour to make the one feel connected. The experts at this are newsreaders. To see how well they do this turn the sound off and watch. Even if they are not speaking they are almost always looking into the camera. Online presenters must always look into the camera and imagine they are talking to just one person. Jesus always focused on the one even when he was speaking to a crowd. The gifted preacher or teacher knows how to do this. The gifted presenter must learn how to do this into the camera. This can be incredibly intimidating even for the most seasoned preacher or teacher. It is completely different to live preaching. You lose all sense of immediate feedback and you cannot adjust to your audience’s reaction. This is none! The way to adjust is to imagine you are having a conversation with a friend and you will naturally adjust. Online Presenters Hint! Look down the barrel of the camera or find a spot just above and behind the camera to focus on. Look just to the left or right just slightly every now and again. It will help you look very natural.
