24.01.2022 These gorgeous little 1999 Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Riservas were in the shop a full 10 minutes before they were snaffled up by a savvy buyer, I got to try the wine that night and they are singing! A perfect example of a fully mature wine, giving everything it had at that moment in time.
22.01.2022 The incredible 2017 Henri Germain Meursault hitting me in the feels tonight! There is perfect definition to the white-fleshed and yellow fruit flavours which are delivered to the palate, silky and deftly weighted. There is a more pronounced acidity than I was expecting in this 2017 edition, certainly more than many other ‘17s I’ve seen, but that just lifts the wine and dials up the palate tension. There is outstanding resonance of flavour on the crisp and concise finish that reveals only a faint hint of lees work. My word this is, magnificent white Burgundy...
21.01.2022 Extraordinary Nebbiolo from Giovanni Rosso! 100% Barolo Vigna Rionda declassified to Langhe due to young vine age, this is an aromatic, tender, and wildly beautiful Nebbiolo. Home-made pizza action happening in the back ground.
21.01.2022 Cracking work-from-home red from Montevertine. The wine is delivered at just the right pitch - slightly high - and with just enough tension and purity for the wine nerds. Naturally, it’s fucking impossible to find. It’s always a great thing when a wines’ hype is justified in the glass!
20.01.2022 2017 Liger Belair La Romanee Grand Cru. At the centre of the grand cru vineyard huddle in the tiny town of Vosne Romanee, this is arguably the worlds greatest viticultural land, and the wines made from this rare earth are priced accordingly. This is perfect wine in its line, length and symmetry. An understated wine of power and class. I feel so privileged to be gifted a glass of this special and iconic wine by a great customer and friend. Just wow!
20.01.2022 Did a Steve Bradbury on Wednesday night and managed to get a guernsey at this stunning dinner due to a late fall. While all wines were tight, the epic qualities of 2010 were clearly on show. Wine of the night honours go to the show stopping 2010 Rousseau Chambertin, but some really notable efforts were the Bruno Clair Clos de Beze, which simply had outstanding back palate intensity, the Faiveley which was in just a heavenly, if slightly youthful spot, and the Cecile Tremblay, whose supportive and non-intrusive winemaking was well appreciated by the group. The Ramonet Montrachet was a fascinating wine, as while it didn’t shimmer like the 2011 Bienvenues Batard Montrachet tasted a couple of years ago, it felt powerful and extremely young, reluctantly opening up over many hours in the glass.
18.01.2022 Even working from home can be fun when you have the right liquid! Immaculate Barolo from Chiara Boschis
17.01.2022 My mate @mwoo2 quickly approaching rockstar status at @penfolds . Supervised entirely from vineyard to bottle by the same winemaker, this nurtured sub-regional Barossa Shiraz is absolutely outstanding. The fruit is pure and the structural elements al-dente, and while duly seasoned in new wood, it’s a masterclass in oak usage and integration. A large percentage of puncheon maturation allows the generous proportion and textural resonance of Marananga to shine through. While the wine is set up for a long life, it’s glowing in my glass right now. I’ve always loved the Bin 150 since inception in 08, but im seriously digging this 2018 vintage. Fuck yeah!
15.01.2022 We were supposed to catch up for ONE glass. Then this happened. The striking Langhe Nebbiolo from @giovannirossowinery was adorable, all from young-vine fruit in the legendary Vigna Rionda Cru in Serralunga d'Alba. The Chiara Boschis Via Nuova was very fine too, but certainly didn't live up to its 100 point review. Unfortunately Rockford continued its string of very disappointing showings - the new vintage 2017 Basket Press Shiraz is an adequate wine at best
14.01.2022 A cheeky glass of 2010 Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne while I set up for tonight's white Burgundy masterclass. The red cup, used as spittoons, give the night a nice beer-pong kinda feel
11.01.2022 I absolutely love the wines from the Rhone Valley. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is always a favourite from the finest producers. The Grenache-driven ‘17 Vieux Telegraphe is incredibly sexy this year with silky and very pure fruit, while the ‘17 Beaucastel was solid, assured and thorough. Both will age brilliantly. I’ll never understand why the market doesn’t embrace Côte Rotie. This gorgeous Rostaing Ampodium is stunningly beautiful, and does nothing less than satisfy every condition we require from a very fine wine.
10.01.2022 Silky lunch with some silky lads. The 17 Ester Canale was a standout for elegance, and while not the deepest wine of the day the 13 Vietti Castiglione was probably the wine of the day for its completeness and balance. The younger bracket of Barolo certainly highlighted the positive trend of Piemonte producers searching for greater purity, finer tannins and generally less clumsy extraction in their wines. . @domgoosem @braddles04 @highfield_michael @craigrog @bonamic @andrewbillsy @fgh_02
10.01.2022 Research. Delicious, delicious research... The 2016 Dugat Py Evocelles is a bloody kracker, but bloody hell is it toight! I’m just loving the latest refinements in style at @dugatpy. Everything is honed to absolute perfection, with the purity enhanced to ultra high-definition, and the tannins delivered pixelated and integrated. I’m still talking about wine, not TVs.
08.01.2022 The first of five consecutive Burgundy Masterclasses to conclude the year. All wines showed exactly as expected, with some of the highlights being the purity and power of William Fevre's Grand Cru Les Preuses; Heitz Lochardet's highly refined Meursault Perrieres 1er Cru, and Etienne Sauzet's Puligny Perrieres 1er Cru. The latter was the wine of the night, despite the rich showings from Blain Gagnard and Follin Arbelet.
02.01.2022 Awesome Italian wines tasted with @bonamic a couple of weeks ago. Some of the finest wines I’ve tasted this year to date. The 2015 Salvioni was powerful and dense, yet with stunning symmetry and clarity. Needs a lot of time to be at its best, but my word what a wine! The super Tuscan’s were easier to approach but equally impressive. The 2015 Le Macchiole Paleo (100% Cab Franc) delivered fine complexity and aromatics on a charming mid-weight frame, while the 2016 Tua Rita Giusto di Notri was powerful and penetrating with its blackcurrant, licorice and plum flavours laced with bucolic notes of the Tuscan countryside. There are people that drink like this everyday... lucky bastards @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
02.01.2022 Loving this working-from-home life! Great ‘17 vintage @sarah.scarecrow
01.01.2022 Another cracking white Burgundy masterclass! Featured the 17 Fevre Les Clos this week, but had a preference for the elegance and poise of the Preuses. Bachelet Monnot Meursault Clos du Cromin was a highlight for the money, while Henri Boillots excellent Meursault Perrieres and Puligny Clos de la Mouchere flashed excellent detail, long flavours, and finesse. The Blain Gagnard Batard Montrachet smoked the Criots opened last week, with simply superior balance, purity and complexity. Another week of white Burgundy next week; and yes that is my Xmas tree up SUPER early. I love this time of year!
01.01.2022 A night was, indeed, had. These Brunello’s from 2015 are killing it. The Fornace was dense and tasty, the Casanova di Neri perfectly pitched and symmetrical (and one of the buys of this great vintage), while the Conti Costanti and Fuligni lived up to expectations as the best of the vintage. For some stupid reason we also drank 1 of the 12 bottles of Talenti Piero that came to Australia - righteous. Nebbiolo was an afterthought, apparently they were really good.
