25.01.2022 SHIRTS VERSUS QUARANTINE: DAY 76 - - The time warp. -... - Sometimes time is linear, one thing follows the next in logical order. Other times the deck get shuffled. - - Yesterdays shirt brought memories of almost 13 years ago, I lived and breathed them as if they were actually yesterday. - - Todays shirt, on the other hand is linked in my mind with an event from this year that seems it happened a lifetime ago. - - I wore this on my induction day @humming_puppy I was so excited about joining the crew at this amazing studio. The perfect addition to my teaching schedule - the future was welcoming me with open arms. Just weeks later, the rona took off big time and so soon after that the world shut down. - - Last summer seems so far away!! Change has been radical, profound, intense. This autumn shook more than just the leaves from the trees. The winds rattled us and much of what we knew lies at our feet decomposing. The clear autumn light illuminating the delicacy of our framework, easily snapped twigs, branches that shelter might just as easily crash down on us. The great fall. - - Of course this is all part of the cycle, the falling away before the rebuilding. The cycle of death and rebirth that is endless. Underneath he roots still grow. Thriving unseen. Connecting us ever deeper to our source. - - This winter Im so looking forward to getting back to taking classes in a room with real live people. To feel warmth of human connection seems more important than ever before. 21.01.2022 SHIRTS VERSUS QUARANTINE: DAY 69 - - Floral Friday -... - Of all the bargain shirts Ive ever sniffed out, this is the prize winner. Back in the day (were taking 2004) Myer still had its bargain basement. Tis shirt was in there, in fact not just this one but a whole stack of them! Reduced, reduced and reduced again, it had gone all the way from $240 to $7.50. And it was in the 50% off section. So I paid just $3.75 for it. - - I dont understand why it didnt sell like hot cakes, its so gorgeous!! And the French cuff gives me an all to rare chance to break out the cufflinks! - - But here Im wearing a cuff muff. Sometimes its fun just to wear the big floppy cuffs loose, or casually folded. - - Second pic Im rocking the French cuff in France. With the money I saved on the shirt, I splurged shopping along Boulevard Saint-Germain. Although this was taken almost exactly 16 years ago, I still have the jacket I bought that day at De Fursac and @mister.jeff.baker has a signature striped jersey from Sonia Rykiel. One day I hope he hands-me-down that number Ive had it in my sights for years - - The man working in the Rykiel store was so ridiculously suave and sexy. He stood there at the counter telling me all about the fragrances while I just swooned and felt terribly silly, barely understanding his rapid French. Mmm, bois, oui! I managed inanely. All the while I was getting lost admiring his marvellous deportment, cropped grey hair and looking into his eyes, grey blue like a stormy sky..... - - Snap out of it!! - - We also went to Berthillion for glaces that day. I had three scoops -vanille, poire et cerise. A good day all in all. It seems so long ago when this lockdown began and I said this too shall pass in fact somedays recently Ive said is this ever going to end and it feels like forever - - The changing of the seasons marks the passing of time. Offers hope that soon change in our circumstances will come. That we will move to live with the rona instead of trying to hide from it. - - Taking each day as a full cycle instead of a stepping stone to tomorrow is both simple and challenging. - - Is it possible to live now? For now? - - Meditation on impermanence is one way I find helps to focus on the immediacy of life. - - All things pass, that is natural and normal. 20.01.2022 SHIRTS VERSUS QUARANTINE: DAY 83 - - Friday Tie Day -... - Theres a few accessories that could have been showcased during this lockdown challenge. Heres one making a last minute appearance. This tie is older than most of the shirts Ive got, its from the late 80s. That particular shade of green, jade according to fashion - even if not strictly the colour of actual jade, in fact Ive never seen jade that looks at all like the trend colour that was so popular back then. - - One colour in the shirt collection thats also making a debut at this late stage of the challenge is yellow. - - The brightness of sunshine. The softness of butter, the cheer of daffodils, the zing of lemon zest, the chirpiness of a baby chick, the nurturing of camomile tea, the treasure of juicy pineapple, rich as gold. - - Yellow feels fun, uplifting and inspiring. I feel so great wearing yellow. Its a sure fire way to brighten a dull day. This shirt is the perfect shade - not too Big Bird and the light almost sheer fabric holds the power of the colour without it becoming overwhelming. - - But not everyone goes for it. In fact some people would never in their wildest dreams wear it. Its energy can feel like way too much, so many people say it doesnt suit me despite its position straddling the warm and cool spectrums and its myriad shades. Why does it cause such a reaction? But for a long while they were out. Too trippy! Downright nauseating sometimes. Swirling like a migraine made manifest. - - This one is such a fine polka dot its quite easy on the eye. From a distance the pattern is almost invisible. I somehow feel discreet and anonymous in this shirt, mildly pixelated and soft focus. Its an easy wear wonder. I didnt know what the future held, out of work, all up in the air. - - I decided to make use of time and go through my wardrobe- see if anything needed washing, ironing, mending. Then I came to this shirt. Such happy memories of our special day came flooding back. I got to thinking that actually so many of my shirts had memories and emotion lingering in them like a hint of perfume. - - That gave me the idea to record all these garments and tell the stories they evoked. 17.01.2022 SHIRTS VERSUS QUARANTINE: DAY 75 - - It was thiiiiis big! -... - It was large indeed. The biggest one hed ever seen. He was such a tree freak, he was almost on a tree high. He talked about how slowly they grew. About how they needed the rain we just didnt get back home to grow so lush. About drying winds and humidity levels. He wondered how many hundred years old it was. He asked me to stand at the base of the tree with arms out wide to get the scale of it in the photo. - - After the tree, we wandered around the rest of the botanical garden. So quiet and almost deserted, such a contrast to the world famous strolling garden we visited near the castle a day or two before. That was full of photography buffs and tour groups being led about and being shouted at through megaphones about the gardens many wonders. Beautiful and terrible, that garden was. But here there was peace. A grove of 100 different types of exquisite arching bamboos. The tiniest humming birds, so tiny at first we thought they were some kind of insect. Iridescent. Blurred. Vibration. There was a display of bonsais, cared for by many generations of bonsai masters. Some of the specimens were centuries old. Thats when I caught the smell. So powerful, such a heady perfume. Somehow smoky, at first I thought it was incense. If scent has a shape, this seemed a hollow scent, not empty, but open. Like a sniffer dog, I tried to trace the source, nose in the air, followed the swirling traces of perfume in the air. Walking around a corner, there was a glasshouse. Surrounded by a moat of a pond. Full of water lilies. White, pink, yellow, purple. Great clusters of them floating their leaves on the water and their fragrance on the air. I can smell it still, whenever I think about it. This shirt is the Ginko shirt, the hummingbird shirt, the water lily shirt. Heavy with memory, sheer black seersucker a net of sensory wonders. 12.01.2022 SHIRTS VERSUS QUARANTINE: DAY 79 - - First wear -... - One day, long ago, before Miss Rona did her thing, I bought this little number online. Then the world shut down and finally, quite some time later, international shipping restarted. So the shirt arrived but the delay didnt matter as I never got to go to Bali where I intended to just throw this on over bathers (or less) as I lounged by the pool for breakfast. Cant you just see this with a big floppy sun hat and a banana lounge? - - Robe type garments have always appealed to me. Anything long and flowing. Kaftan, kimono or kurta, I love them all. Maybe it was just seeing Star Wars at an impressionable age has something to do with it. I dont know why but there it is. - - Some days I think about packing it all in and retreating to a monastery. Not just for the robes of course. For the simple yet complex life of discipline, devotion and meditation. This isolation has given us all a little taste of that life, cloistered away, getting up close and personal with our own selves. Enough of a taste to challenge me, enough to make me more curious. - - Retreats could be the way forward. An annual sequestering might just be the ticket. Anyhow next week we can get back to yoga practice in studios. Thats like a little hour long retreat and Im sooooo looking forward to it. Being with a group of people all united in their individual journey of self awareness. Wonderful stuff!!! Here I have the under layer fully buttoned and the outer layer folded open, but great effects can be had by fastening the buttons of one layer to the buttonholes of the other. One can also change it up according to how high or low the layers are done up. Such fun! - - Fun. Getting dressed each day can be such fun. 08.01.2022 SHIRTS VERSUS QUARANTINE: DAY 85 - - High Stepping Out -... - Well it seems I have more shirts than there were days of isolation. As far as life achievements go, not such a biggie, but hey, it was something to do. - - This retro treasure has been saved to very last because, well, its an eyeful. In all seriousness I thought this shirt was the last word in fabulous when I got it, sometime back in the late 80s. As if the squiggly patterns, the stripes and the spots werent enough though, at the club, the pattern has ultra violet reactivity. Its fluorescent!! Its just for fun these days and ideal for costume parties. But back then I thought I was the biz in this number - - Not only is it the last day of closure for yoga studios, its also International Day of Yoga, the Winter Solstice and my dearly departed Nannas birthday. 08.01.2022 I agree with this entirely. Though it is easier for some (many?) people to be told what to think and feel. Yoga is an ideal escape from that. For me, the idea is to look inside and notice what comes up. This enquiry and discovery is the real joy of the yoga practice, I find. Who am I to tell a person what their body might feel like, how they will respond emotionally or energetically? Whenever a teacher says "you should" I deflate . . .

07.01.2022 SHIRTS VERSUS QUARANTINE: DAY 81 - - Trusty ole steed -... - Its been most enjoyable rustling through the wardrobe during this isolation. - - Some clothes have sparked memories of where or when I bought them, others recall the occasion on which I wore them. Travel through time and space achieved by just flicking through fabric. - - But this old faithful has been around for so long and been worn so much, its another level. Its at least a dozen years old, I remember I took it to Japan in 2008. I remember that clearly because I got the cutest note pinned to it when it came back from being laundered. A note about the frayed edges, sweetly suggesting it was time to get rid of it!! Actually it was deliberately frayed, distressed they call it, when I bought it. Which I liked, because it seemed an old favourite already. Thats what it has become. - - Its been worn everywhere. Holidays down the coast, camping trips, weekends away, its wrapped itself around me while Ive been in gardens, in forests, on mountains and on the couch. Ill wear this until it does actually fall apart. For all the items I have squirrelled away, this one has probably done more than its fair share of duty. - - The classic western styling takes it beyond fashion or trend. 06.01.2022 SHIRTS VERSUS QUARANTINE: DAY 70 - - Stripy Saturday -... - Steppin into the weekend like...... - - Stockholm is memorable for many reasons. The water all around, the amazing underground stations, the summer sunset at almost 11pm, the ABBA museum, the beautiful streets and squares and gardens. But the ABBA museum alone was worth going for. The actual Eurovision costumes-incredible!! - - We honeymooned there and every day of our stay was glorious sunny and warm. There were picnics under the trees in an apple orchard, boat trips on the archipelago, wandering around luscious gardens and even finding a place called Dog Island. Spoiler alert - its an island where locals go to let their dogs run about off lead. How fun!! Turns out Swedish dogs are very loyal to their own humans and not so interested in being patted by Australian tourists. Meh. - - Stenstroms is a brand from that part of the world, and unlike the snobby dogs, their gorgeous shirts didnt in the least mind being oohed and ahhed over, fondled and stroked. 06.01.2022 SHIRTS VERSUS QUARANTINE: DAY 78 - - Spirit Healing -... - Once upon a in the mountains of Bali a gigantic mushroom sprouted from the earth. People came from far and wide to see this wonder. One woman who came to the mushroom heard it speak to her. The spirit of the mushroom called her to give up her life of business and busyness and come here, to this very place, and heal people with the guidance of the mushroom spirit. - - So she left everything and bought the land the mushroom had spoken to her on and dedicated a temple on that very spot. - - I went to this place with a group of people and we went through a ceremony where there was incense and music and so on. Then the mushroom lady went around to each person, and as she knelt before them, they let out a cry, a moan, a yell. This apparently was the negative energy being expelled!! Some remained silent. One assumes the silent ones were pure souls? I was one of the last people in the line and had a lot of time to consider what was about to happen to me. During this time I determined no to make a peep. I was going to be brave and strong. Surely I wasnt just a balloon full of bad spirits just waiting to be popped? No. I was not. - - Then madame mushroom came and knelt before me. She took my hand in hers. Ahhh, it was fine. Then half a nanosecond later a sound came out of nowhere. Soprano high, jet engine loud. It was me making that sound. More of a squeal than a shriek. Despite my best intentions, I was serving stuck pig realness. Now I understood what madame mushrooms magic was. - - Afterwards I patted a dog which is always good medicine and on the trip back to town, we laughed hysterically, uproariously, we laughed ourselves sore. That surely is the very best medicine of all. - - This is the shirt I wore that day. I wore it with a sarong and a hibiscus flower behind my ear. Todays shirt has a very special purpose. This is the one I like to wear when travelling on a plane. - - With the half placket, theres no chance of the bottom buttons catching on the seat belt or popping open. The depth of the top opening allows for temperature control. The best thing, however, is the fabric itself. The stripes in the weave are quite defined and the lovely little ridges they create are perfect for back scratching.
