07.01.2022 In a charming nod to days of yore, wedding couples are incorporating ‘jumping the broomstick’ into their modern ceremonies. Beautiful, elaborate brooms add a whimsical touch to the event. Ceremonial brooms can be DIY and decorated with things that hold personal meaning to the couple, or bought commercially. There are various creative ways of integrating the broom into a ceremony, limited only by your imagination! Though we often associate jumping of the broom with slavery in... the US, there is evidence to support its origins from Romani gypsies in Wales. In pagan tradition the Broom or Besom is a purifying and protective instrument, guarding the threshold of the home and those who live within. Now enjoying resurgence, and often combined with a hand-fasting ceremony, the bride and groom jump the broom together signifying a sweeping away of the old to make way for a new beginning and a giant leap of faith into their future. It was traditionally believed, the higher the leap the stronger the union. If one failed to make the jump, or touched the broom on the way it did not bode well for the marriage. Irrespective of race, religion and nationality, the jumping of the broom is loaded with symbolism and significance, a fun and enchanting way of honouring the union.
