11.01.2022 Better Man - Pearl Jam Tribute & 90's Hits at The Midway Tavern September 15, 2018. I will admit to being a bit disappointed that Betterman Australia Better Ma...n weren’t solely a Pearl Jam tribute, and I guess I’m a bit confused why they have named the band Better Man if they aren’t going to be a tribute to Pearl Jam. I only caught the last 2 songs from first set which was the Pearl Jam set, and it sounded really good. I am glad that they continued to play grunge/alternative rock music, as I don’t often get to hear a lot of cover bands that concentrate solely on this genre. There are some that do include songs from it, but not the entire set. Hearing songs originating from fabulous bands such as Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden, (which weren’t just the stock standard ones), made a welcomed change. Songs from those bands require a lead vocalist with a strong, well developed vocal range, just to be able to endure the workout that their voice is put through. Although Steve doesn’t always manage to hit the notes, I could hear the potential in his voice to be able to nail this. The average punter rarely thinks of the lead singer as a musician as they aren’t seen to be physically playing an instrument. What they don’t realise is that the singers vocal chords are in fact their instrument, and therefore requires the player (singer), to have lessons to be able to play it. The vocal chords, instrument, prior to being played also requires tuning (vocal warm up), just the same as a musical instrument such as a guitar does. I am unsure whether Steve has had any vocal training, and if not, would recommend doing so to ensure that he doesn’t damage his instrument vocal chords. During live performances singers of genres like this use a vocal technique called belting which allows the vocal to cut through the lead guitar. Attempting to belt too loudly in a higher register incorrectly, leaves an untrained belter hoarse, and can also leave the throat feeling painful. Singers need to balance their registers, and by developing their chest and head voice can help to improve the belt. Many untrained vocalists eventually do serious damage to their vocal chords, leaving them with (nodules), and if left unchanged, can end up with a permanent loss of range and timbre (tone.) I’m confident that with practice, and after they have done more gigs, Steve’s vocals will get there. This was the bands debut, and I believe that they can become a really good one. They have everything that they require to get there, and going by the amount of people that were there early in the evening, they potentially have a very large audience. This is because they are tapping in to a market (genre) that is currently not being over serviced here. The guys play well together, have a very strong engine with drummer David White, and a fabulous lead guitarist (Greg Osborne) who really does steal the show, by reproducing that overdriven dirty/growling sound to perfection! I look forward to catching this band again once they have a few more gigs under their belt, overall a Very promising debut, well done guys! Better Man are: Steven Carleton/Vocals Graham Burkin/ BassGuitar/back up vocals Greg Ozzy Osborn/ Lead Guitar/ back up vocals David White/ Drums. I was also very impressed with the sound and lighting of this show, and believe that it was provided by Australian Music Production & It-AMPit. Well done to all involved.
