25.01.2022 Café De Luxe, interior layout Brewarrina, NSW, 2002 The Café De Luxe, located in far outback New South Wales, was one of the best-preserved examples of a late 1...920s Greek-run soda/sundae ‘parlour’. It was owned and operated by the Pippos family. Angelo Pippos: "Dad [George Pippos] was from Ithaca. He had cafés in Mungindi [in New South Wales], Goondiwindi and Dirranbandi [both in Queensland] and then started this one in 1926. He sold the others to his brothers. The café is exactly the same today [in 2002] as it was then I can well remember the soda fountain. Dad had just put in a complete new system [in the late 1940s] and as an eighteen-month-old baby I put my fingers in the compressor and lost a finger Growing up in the café we [my siblings and I] did our bit before and after school, and during the holidays. You cleaned and served. In those days, table service was very big. Today it is completely different, it’s take-away with the new food regulations coming out, it is going to be very difficult to maintain the café the way it is So we’ll probably sell." On 24 August 2014, fire totally razed the Café De Luxe. Angelo lost more than a long-standing family-run business: "This is the only home I’ve ever known". Photo by Effy Alexakis, from the 'In Their Own Image: Greek-Australians' National Project Archives, Macquarie University, Sydney THIS, AND MANY MORE CAFE & MILK BAR STORIES CAN BE FOUND IN "Greek Cafes & Milk Bars of Australia" (Halstead Press, 2016): http://www.cafesandmilkbars.com.au

16.01.2022 Everyone please download the Service NSW app to make it easier for check in when you come to the pub. Thanks all for who made it down here last night, everyone... adhered to the COVID rules, we’ve been closed for a very long time and it was good to hear the jukebox playing again. On that note of being closed for a while I realise a lot of young ones in the town may have turned 18 that I am not aware of so we welcome them BUT they must have a photo ID before they can come in. I did have an incident last night when a young girl has walked in with a group and taken a photo and walked out again before I could check her ID. She did not attempt to buy a drink but I can’t have anyone underage in the hotel at all. This job is not easy so I don’t need people ringing me abusing me on the phone saying I have underage drinkers in the hotel when clearly I did not. I welcome the Police at any time to do walk throughs. Anyone breaking COVID, underage laws or bad behaviour will be barred immediately for 12 months. We open around 8.30pm to midnight Friday and Saturday nights so come down and enjoy some music tonight. . Janine - have a nice day!

01.01.2022 BREWARRINA LEADERS LEADING BY EXAMPLE A failure to address 'closing the gap' targets often makes reference to race and education within remote areas. When ask...ed about this issue Penny Johnson jumped to the defense of education in remote communities stating, ‘Our culture is different to white Australia and the minds of our youth are not really understood. Given the opportunity, they are capable of achieving great things.’ Penny’s comment isn’t an opinion, she has just demonstrated its value by not only winning the ‘TAFE Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Student of the Year’ but also by winning the big one ‘TAFE’s Higher Education Student of the Year’. Penny wasn’t alone in winning a state title. Naomi Train, another local Indigenous leader, also demonstrating the depth of passion and ability that exists within Brewarrina. She took out TAFE’s state title for the ‘Health Wellbeing & Community Service Student of the Year’. As one of our community’s leaders in early childhood intervention, the Brewarrina community is in good hands. Penny states, ‘After such a long period of disadvantage the culture in Brewarrina is beginning to shift. It is so exciting to see younger minds picturing a vision with opportunity’. With leaders like Penny and Naomi leading by example, we look forward to a future with Indigenous leaders creating a culture that promotes self-determination, respect, inclusion, and connection. Congratulations Penny. Congratulations Naomi. Well done! Brewarrina Shire Council Brewarrina Newspaper Brewarrina Aboriginal Integrated Child and Family Centre
