25.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE BREWARRINA FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE EVOKE THEIR RIGHT TO SELF DETERMINATION. Brewarrina has been the subject of 2 Royal Commissions, 2 Ombudsman’s Reports, 2 Public Enquiries, identified as the states most disadvantaged over 2 census periods, and is a leader in ‘dropping off the edge data’. Brewarrina’s First Nations representatives have raised concerns re State and Federal government infrastructure on many occasions, only to have their voice suppressed. Every ...attempt at an internal solution has been quashed. This media release is not a statement, it is the first step in a campaign to right the wrongs that have been impacted upon the Brewarrina community for decades. Community representatives have given the State and Federal governments a compliance date of the 31st of December ‘to amend its policy and funding arrangements to exclude Brewarrina from the MPRA footprint’. As Brewarrina’s peak community organisation, the Brewarrina Local Aboriginal Land Council supports the views and actions of our community representatives. Come 2021, Brewarrina will stand united as pioneers of self-determination or challenge the authorities who are responsible for the sources of division and unrest that have impacted our history of disadvantage. Please share and like our page to follow or support our journey.

16.01.2022 BREWARRINA LEADERS LEADING BY EXAMPLE A failure to address 'closing the gap' targets often makes reference to race and education within remote areas. When asked about this issue Penny Johnson jumped to the defense of education in remote communities stating, ‘Our culture is different to white Australia and the minds of our youth are not really understood. Given the opportunity, they are capable of achieving great things.’ Penny’s comment isn’t an opinion, she has just demo...nstrated its value by not only winning the ‘TAFE Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Student of the Year’ but also by winning the big one ‘TAFE’s Higher Education Student of the Year’. Penny wasn’t alone in winning a state title. Naomi Train, another local Indigenous leader, also demonstrating the depth of passion and ability that exists within Brewarrina. She took out TAFE’s state title for the ‘Health Wellbeing & Community Service Student of the Year’. As one of our community’s leaders in early childhood intervention, the Brewarrina community is in good hands. Penny states, ‘After such a long period of disadvantage the culture in Brewarrina is beginning to shift. It is so exciting to see younger minds picturing a vision with opportunity’. With leaders like Penny and Naomi leading by example, we look forward to a future with Indigenous leaders creating a culture that promotes self-determination, respect, inclusion, and connection. Congratulations Penny. Congratulations Naomi. Well done! Brewarrina Shire Council Brewarrina Newspaper Brewarrina Aboriginal Integrated Child and Family Centre
