23.01.2022 It's Tick Season Again.... It's that time of the year for the deadly paralysis tick to make its presence known. Both dogs and cats are affected by this parasite which without treatment will be detrimental for your pet. Paralysis ticks are small and brown in colour when they first attach. After 2-3 days of feeding on your pet, they engorge and change colour to a slate grey or blue grey colour. It's at this time your pet will start showing signs of toxicity. ... Signs to look out for on both dogs and cats... Difficulty walking (wobbly walk) Panting heavily (respiratory distress) Change in vocals Struggling to get up Inappetence Dry retching or vomiting Lethargic Disinterested in things If your pet displays any of these signs, check them thoroughly and contact the clinic. We have several preventatives available for both dogs and cats. If you don't have your pet on tick treatment, contact the clinic, we can help

10.01.2022 FLY STRIKE.... Summer is not only the perfect time for flea and tick infestation, but also for flies. Fly bites also known as "Fly strike", are when flies are biting your dog to obtain a blood meal and the bite is often painful. ... This particularly occurs around your dog's head mainly the ears as this area has thin skin, less hair, plus the fact your dog has the inability to defend their ears. Fly strike causes red, bleeding, painful open sores that lead to Fly strike dermatitis. The female fly will then lay her eggs in the open wounds. Maggots are then present and they eat away at the flesh on your dog, leaving necrotic tissue. This leads to a foul smell, lethargy, unwillingness to eat or drink and death in severe cases. Treating Fly strike dermatitis can be a long process depending on your dog's overall health. You can take steps to prevent Fly strike dermatitis from happening to your dog. Don't leave your dog outside for too long in the warmer months since this is when flies are most active. Use pet safe fly sprays or creams to deter flies from biting paying particular attention to your dog's ears and around the head but avoiding your dog's eyes. You can also use environmental sprays, granules or plants to deter flies from your dog's living areas. If you suspect your dog has Fly strike, or you would like some help with preventing Fly strike please contact the clinic. We can help

04.01.2022 WINTER AND ARTHRITIS... As the days are getting cooler and the frost is setting in we should be thinking about how are our pets handling this?.... Arthritis is a progressive and rather painful joint disease that is typified by a breakdown of the joint's cartilage. Both dogs and cats suffer from this uncomfortable condition, but their is help.... Signs that your DOG may be suffering from arthritis: Shows signs of stiffness, especially when first getting up in the morning. Is reluctant to walk, run or play. Is reluctant to climb stairs or jump up onto furniture or in the car. Is limping or falling behind on walks. Is showing a personality change i.e. more aggressive, irritable or stubborn. Cries in pain when being touched or is resistant to being touched. Has swelling of a joint or abnormal appearance of a joint or joints. Is excessively licking, chewing or grooming at a joint or joints. Signs that your CAT may be suffering from arthritis: Also shows signs of stiffness when getting up in the morning and walking. Reluctant to jump up or climb onto furniture. Hiding away. Shows changes in personality i.e. becoming aggressive or irritable. Doesnt want to be touched or picked up and may hiss when you do. Shows signs of lameness or lethargy. Decreased flexibility. Excessive licking, chewing or grooming of the joint areas. Reluctant to play with you. Swelling of the joint or joints. Arthritis can develop due to a number of different factors. Age is the leading cause, as most pets will suffer to some degree from joint problems as they get older, just like us!! But age is not the only factor when it comes to arthritis. Other factors include: Breed: Larger breeds can be more susceptible to joint problems. Weight: Extra unnecessary weight places undue stress on joints. Injuries: Trauma from an accident and/or wear and tear in everyday life can cause a joint to deteriorate. Other Disorders: Such as Hip or Elbow dysplasia, can lead to further joint problems. Treatment of arthritis comes in many forms and is used to be aimed at reducing pain and inflammation and get your pets joints moving better. If you think your pet may be suffering from arthritis contact the clinic and one of our vets will assess your pet. Arthirits is painful, but we can help.
