05.01.2022 With Easter just around the corner, we send out a reminder to please to help Care 4 Our Wild Dolphins. Illegal feeding of dolphins, particularly in South East Q...ueensland, is a growing issue and can lead to many problems including increases in illness, injury and death of the animals involved. It is ILLEGAL to feed dolphins in Australia without a permit. This is because it can be very harmful to dolphins (and people) when it isn't managed. In some cases, dolphins can become addicted to the equivalent of 'junk food' when they become too reliant on such food sources. In some sites, we have seen the dolphins become entangled in fishing gear more as they approach people to beg for food. It is important to help them stay safe and teach them that 'fast food' isn't healthy for them by giving them space (there is a regulatory approach distance of 30m for swimmers and 50m for vessels in Queensland) and reel in your line when dolphins are about. Regulations are enforceable too - there are hefty fines for illegal feeding, harassment and interference of these animals in Queensland. It is up to all of us to Care 4 Dolphins!! Please be a Dolphin Hero and help keep dolphins safe, healthy and wild! Note: There are 4 sites in Australia where feeding programs occur that are permitted and managed - including Tangalooma, Tin Can Bay, Monkey Mia and Bunbury. - no other sites have permissions. The contact numbers for Queensland are below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T58QaMBOOXA
