25.01.2022 Millstream Chichester National Park WA An oasis in the desert, beautiful watering holes, white snappy gums, wildflowers and red dust and brown rocks. We went for a day trip from Karratha down the Rio Tinto Access Road which Rio Tinto built to maintain the rail line from the mine in Tom Price to the Dampier and Sampson Ports. Just driving to Millstream was an experience driving next to these trains carrying 226 carriages (yes I counted them!) We visited the Millstream Homestead, Python Pool and did the snappy gum drive. Beautiful Place
23.01.2022 All ready for a Geraldton Christmas
18.01.2022 Next stop was Kalgoorlie. Wasn't sure what to expect from this town thanks to shows like Kalgoorlie Cops but the twin town of Boulder/Kalgoorlie was really pretty. We really love the old gold rush towns, beautiful old buildings and wide country streets. We visited the old two up shed, did a super pit tour and toured Hannans tourist mine which the kids got to sit in a big dump truck and pan for gold. We also passed the Hay St Brothels, Toured parklands, visited the skate park, toured the museum and watched a super pit blast. Cannot believe Kalgoorlie in its hay day had 29,000 people and 92 Pubs!!! Needless to say we really enjoyed Kalgoorlie!!!!
16.01.2022 Broken Hill has the reputation of the most diverse minerals of anywhere in Australia, the birthplace of BHP. There are some beautiful old buildings but quite a few need renovating and the roads were probably the worst we have been on. We got back into our touristy groove and visited Bells 1950's milk bar where the kids had their first spiders. We also visited Pro Harts gallery, the Gem gallery where the kids took all the stones and gems they found and has a great chat with the Gemologist. And I had to walk through the cemetery to find Pro Harts grave. We drove out to Silverton which had some beautiful old buildings and had lunch at Silverton Hotel. We toured the Mad Max museum and drove out to the locations of where the sequel was shot.
14.01.2022 We spent nearly the last 3 months in Karratha with temperatures getting into the 40's and with the high humidity the air con got a workout. The kids and I were lucky to have a pool and the air con while poor Nick was out in it for 10-12 hours a day. The Pilbara is such a beautiful place. We met friends here that we just know are going to be the kind you have for life. Thanks Jo, Trent, Amani and Remy you made our stay so much better!! We saw the World Premiere of the new Red Dog movie and loved it, cruised some markets and squeezed in some nice drives! Now to explore the West Coast!!
14.01.2022 Mildura was a lot bigger than we were expecting it to be. We stayed at a fantastic park on the other side of the Murray, we had a river front site and forgot how beautiful the Murray was. Mildura was quite relaxing, we went for a trip to Wentworth and visited the Gaol and where the Murray and Darling rivers meet. We visited Woodsies Gem Shop where we saw a demonstration on cutting and polishing rocks. The yabbies weren't really big enough to eat so we decided to buy some instead, very yummy! The Paddlesteamers went passed everyday so we decided we might have a cruise and we passed through a loch which the kids found interesting.
13.01.2022 After 2 nights crossing the Nullabour we ended up at Port Augusta. Last time we did a trip to Perth we just drove through. This time we decided to stay. Not much to do there but we got to catch up with friends who we first met at Paronella Park QLD, Nick then drove the Cape with them. It was great to catch up with Liane, Dale, Jade, Zoe and Paige, the 4 days went really quick. It got pretty hot temps reaching 48, We took in a few sights but we all were more than happy catching up with a drink and a swim in the pool.
12.01.2022 After leaving Karratha we did a fairly long drive to Coral Bay which is the heart of the Ningaloo Reef. We stayed at a CP that was opposite Bills Bay where you could snorkel straight off the beach. We walked down to Skeleton Bay which is a Reef Shark Sanctuary we saw plenty of Sharks in the shallows. We drove out to Cape Range National Park which had some great scenery and beautiful beaches like Turquoise Bay. Leaving Exmouth we came across a dad and his baby emus, very cute and inquisitive. The next thing was a dune buggy ride to the Lagoon and Oyster Stacks where we snorkelled and saw Wabbegong Sharks and a Sea Snake. Its so nice to be back on the road again seeing things.
10.01.2022 OK so a quick update on what we are doing. We are currently in Karratha and have been for a few weeks and will be for a few more weeks. Nick is doing a bit of work to build up the bank balance again so we can continue. On our way into Karratha we were surprised at the towns beauty, we drove over a mountain and could see beautiful blue water with red rocks surrounding a little town. On the surface there doesn't seem much to this little 'mining' town but there is more to this ...town than just Red Dog and Ore. The people are so nice even in a industry downturn where many home owners have lost so much money. Nick and I still wonder if we could have got an extra 50K on our property when these people have lost in the 300K + regions on there properties. Kind of brings things back into perspective........We have been extremely lucky to have found another travelling family who we have became pretty good friends which makes the days so much easier!! So as we chain the van down and get set for cyclone season we cant wait to see some more of Karratha and keep on exploring this beautiful country! See more
06.01.2022 Port Hedland is famous for its Iron Ore. It ships around 200,000 tonne per ship. There are big ships lining the horizon waiting to get filled up at the Port. We sat and watched them for ages. The trains run 24/7 carting the iron ore into port as well as road trains. It also produces huge amounts of salt, massive salt piles. We also got to see the staircase to the moon.
06.01.2022 Karijini National Park WA. Unfortunatly we only had 2 days here so decided to concentrate on the things to see around Dales Campground. We did all the walks some twice! We swam at Fern Pool, Circular Pool and Fortisque Falls, We walked the gorge and did the rim walk, pretty awesome place but didn't realize how cold it would be at night!! it got down to 13Deg.Brrrrr!!! We took the tent and the swag and got really dirty! Red dirt got into everything but it was good to escape the van for a bit. We visited Tom Price tiny little mining town with a massive Iron ore mine. We will be in Karratha a while so hopefully will get to do the other side of Karijini soon!
01.01.2022 Next stop was Geraldton, we loved the beachfront, very green with heaps of playgrounds for the kids. Beautiful tree lined streets and old building with very little graffiti or rubbish. We visited the HMAS Sydney Memorial, the Museum, Esplanade and the Historic (haunted) Oakabella Homestead. We celebrated Christmas and decorated the van. Nick did his first glazed ham and tasted the Western Rock Lobster which Geraldton is famous for. We were lucky enough to have our old mates who live in Perth come up and stay with us. Was so great to see familiar faces and catch up with them. We really liked Gero, we had beautiful sunny days and cool overnight. Bit windy though.
