25.01.2022 Why would you need to know about dental emergencies? If you know of a problem that could happen, you are going to be better prepared for it. As many people know, small problems in the mouth can causes much bigger problems if they are not treated as soon as possible. Learning about the most common dental emergencies will give you a great advantage when they arise. Losing a Filling or Crown... Most people have at least one filling or crown in their mouth. And due to the normal wear and tear, the filling or crown could fall out. This shouldn’t be taken too lightly. Firstly, this could be a sign that there is another cavity that has formed in your tooth. And secondly, without the filling or crown on your tooth temperature sensitivity and deterioration could take place. Make sure to rinse your mouth out with warm water if ever this happens to you. After that, it is wise to fill the cavity wit cotton wool or a specific dental product like Dentemp. Go see the dentist as soon as you can. Chipping or Breaking a Tooth This is one of the more serious dental emergencies. Make sure to try and save the broken or chipped tooth. Visit the dentist as quickly as possible with the broken tooth. If the tooth is not salvageable then you will have to explore other options such as dental bridges and implants. Knocking a Tooth Out But what if you completely knock a tooth out of your mouth? You need to save the tooth! Put it straight into a sealed container filled with either milk or salt water. Get to the dentist within the hour and the tooth could be saved. In the event of emergency dental treatment, you should see a dentist as soon as possible. Bridge Street Dental Clinic offers a same day service for all dental emergencies from toothache to lost or broken crowns, chipped teeth and fillings to abscesses, trauma, avulsed teeth and a swollen face. We will take care of you and work to ensure you get the best emergency treatment. (02) 9247 5254 or send us a message. 24.01.2022 Bad breath? At the microbial level, bad breath happens when the naturally occurring bacteria in our mouths break down the food particles that are lingering in between our teeth, along our gum lines, and, especially, on our tongue. This process releases a bunch of stinky compounds and gives rise to the dreaded bad breathor, as its more formally called, halitosis. The good news: Its is usually temporary. The bad news? Its often caused by a less-than-stellar brushing and f...lossing routineas well as a bunch of other foods and habits too. If you have any concerns over your oral health, dont hesitate to visit our team! (02) 9247 5254 or send us a message. 23.01.2022 Who are the candidates for Porcelain Veneers? Candidates for veneers must be free of oral health issues to undergo this treatment. If patients have any dental health issues, Dr. Donets will have to address the condition before performing a veneer treatment and will perform an oral examination and various other tests including a digital X-ray exam to assess whether a porcelain veneer treatment is right for the patient. If the patient is a candidate, Dr. Donets will create a ...dental treatment plan detailing the entire process. Patients will be educated on all pre- and post-treatment instructions during this appointment. Porcelain veneers can be performed as a stand-alone treatment or combined with another dental treatment. Patients may need veneers for: - Cosmetically transforming the smile - Overcrowded or Misshapen teeth - Discoloration or stains - Spacing issues - Chipped teeth May you have any questions about veneers, please contact us today! 23.01.2022 What can cause bad breath? 1. Diet. Some food and drink dehydrate the mouth. Tea, coffee and alcohol would all fall into this category. Saliva is key in washing away the bad bacteria in the mouth, when the mouth dries out and saliva production slows, the bacteria that causes bad breath thrives and multiplies. 2. Poor Oral Hygiene. Bad breath is usually due to a build-up of bacteria in the mouth and this often the result of ineffective oral hygiene. 3. Not Keeping Your Mout...h Hydrated. The best thing you can do for your oral health during the day is to keep your mouth hydrated. 4. Smoking makes bad breath far more likely. 5. Underlying Health Issues. If you have any concerns over your oral health, dont hesitate to visit our team! (02) 9247 5254 or send us a message. 17.01.2022 As painful as a root canal is a commonly used phrase. But root canal procedures, when done properly, are not painful at all. What causes the need for this procedure? The tiny canals in teeth may become infected, which can lead to an infection in the pulp of the tooth. A dentist or endodontist performs the root canal procedure, removing the infection and later giving the tooth a filling or crown. It is a widely held myth that a tooth that has undergone a root canal procedu...re has no feeling. However, the only nerve removed from the tooth in a root canal is the one that discerns heat or cold. The remaining nerves those surrounding the tooth, where they are joined to bone and gum continue to give the tooth feeling. So when you tap your teeth you should not be able to tell the difference between a natural tooth and a root-canalled tooth. Please let us help you! (02) 9247 5254 or send us a message. 17.01.2022 5 things a dental cleaning can do for you 1. Prevent cavities. The whitish film that builds up on your teeth is called plaque and is the leading cause of tooth decay. 2. Stop tooth loss. 16.01.2022 What causes mouth breathing? The complex cascade of issues that lead to mouth breathing can begin in infancy and early childhood. Mouth breathing in babies might be a consequence of tongue-tie, reflux, upper respiratory infections or other respiratory issues. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids and allergic rhinitis are other common reason for mouth breathing.... Structural issues such as the deviated septum, narrow nasal passages and small jaw size can also contribute to mouth breathing. To some extent, mouth breathing is a self-reinforcing and learned behaviour that is associated with other dysfunctional breathing and poor function of the muscles of the mouth and face. Dentists are able to help their patients reduce dental disease as well as more holistic health issues by assisting in converting their patients to nasal breathing. 13.01.2022 Why are there gaps between front teeth? The most common reasons are: - Mismatch between small teeth and big jaws - Labial frenum - Genetics - Congenitally missing teeth... - Thumb sucking - Incorrect swallowing reflex - Periodontitis - Combination of the above Depending on the reason, the size of the gap and its treatment may be different. We as dentists can correct a teeth diastema successfully, but we have to study every case carefully in order to find the right way. 12.01.2022 Did you know that the foods you choose to eat every day have a huge impact on your overall health, but they also affect the health and appearance of your teeth and gums? Over-eating sugary and acidic food and drink leads to tooth decay, the single most prevalent childhood disease, which can have further detrimental impacts on your overall health and add up to lifelong oral health complications that compromise the look and function of your teeth. Luckily, plaque and tart...ar and the complications that they lead to can be prevented: Aside from sticking to an oral health routine, avoiding these eight foods and drinks will help you optimise your oral health. For optimum dental health and to prevent dental issues from occurring in the first place, never go to bed without brushing your teeth and always brush your tongue and teeth properly with a dentist-approved toothpaste. Don’t forget that flossing the teeth is as important as brushing for removing the plaque your toothbrush can’t reach. Mouthwash can also be an indispensable tool for reducing the amount of acid in your mouth, re-mineralising the teeth, and helping to wash away plaque. By planning your snacks, sticking to a good oral health routine, and keeping up with your regular dental appointments, you can prevent problems with your oral health and maintain your beautiful smile. 11.01.2022 If you have ever had toothache then you will know it can be extremely painful as it is a signal that something is wrong with your tooth. Initially, it is worth just gently flossing around the tooth just in case you have a piece of impacted food trapped in between your teeth. This can be enough to slightly dislodge the tooth, pushing it out of position and causing pain. If the toothache persists, it is a good idea to book an appointment to come and see our dentist. It could ...be that your tooth is badly infected and it will require urgent treatment to save it. Untreated cavities lead to two rounds of pain: initial pain and recurring pain. However, if you can put up with it long enough, the pain goes away because the nerve eventually dies. You might then believe your body has fixed the problem, but months or years after the initial pain, another pain strikes with a vengeance. Tooth pain can become a very serious issue with very serious consequences if left untreated, especially with children. Prevention and regular dental check ups are the best way to avoid gruesome days, restless nights, visits to the emergency department and more frequent visits to your dentist. If you have a dental emergency and need a dentist fast, we’re able to help whether you’re an existing patient or not! (02) 9247 5254 or send us a message. 11.01.2022 Have you ever noticed while smiling, that one of your front teeth is darker that the rest of them? Have you wondered why it happened and if there is a way to fix this? Although there may be a lot of different reasons for a tooth to be darker than the rest, the most common reason is internal discolouration or pulp problems.... Discoloration usually happens after a trauma or root canal treatment and is the result of the degradation of the blood products inside the pulp chamber. Enamel is affected by the degradations products and it changes its colour to brown, orange or dark gray. The problem may be noticed in both anterior or posterior teeth but the truth is our patients rarely care, unless the tooth is located at the front of their mouth. Discoloration of a root canal treated tooth or a dead tooth is an esthetic problem that can easily be fixed with the technique of internal whitening. Internal whitening is an economical dental treatment that does not affect the shape of the teeth, nor its position on the dental arch. Sometimes internal whitening may take place before an all ceramic prosthesis, in order to improve the colour of the abutment tooth that will allow the light to move easier through the abutment, improving the final esthetic result. 11.01.2022 Teeth cleaning tips from Dr Elena Donets: Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for about 2 minutes to help keep your teeth and mouth healthy. Plaque is a film of bacteria that coats your teeth if you don't brush them properly. It contributes to gum disease and tooth decay. Tooth brushing stops plaque building up. But it doesn’t matter how often you brush your teeth if you’re not doing it properly. Next time you brush, take a moment to stop and observe... your technique. Are you holding the brush at a 45-degree angle? Are you using short, circular motions with the head of the brush pointed towards your gum line? Are you brushing each tooth between 10 and 15 times? If the answer to any of those questions was no, it’s time to adjust your tooth brushing technique a bit. Those techniques have been proven to be the most effective when it comes to getting teeth clean. You may also want to talk to us about proper brushing and flossing technique next time you’re at the office. (02) 9247 5254 or send us a message. 07.01.2022 Tannins are organic substances found in plants. Tannins in coffee, tea and even wine can lead to stains on teeth. Black teas and dark coffees are the biggest culprits when it comes to teas. In fact, some black teas can even cause more tooth discolouration than coffee! Professional tooth cleaning & whitening can be an effective method of removing tea stains from the teeth. (02) 9247 5254 or send us a message to learn about teeth cleaning options. 06.01.2022 Here are 5 reasons why brushing your tongue is important for your overall oral health: It removes harmful odour-causing build-up. It reduces the risk of periodontal disease. It enhances taste. It reduces your risk of oral thrush.... It boosts your immunity levels and digestive health. To minimise the number of bacteria in your mouth, you should brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth. Simply scrub your tongue back and forth and left to right, using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Then, rinse your mouth with water. (02) 9247 5254 or send us a message. 05.01.2022 If you have obstructive sleep apnea, you have multiple treatment options. While CPAP therapy is still the most widely prescribed, oral appliance therapy is quickly becoming the most popular because it is simpler to use and more comfortable for patients. - Jaw/mandibular repositioning devices: These prevent sleep apnea symptoms by gently shifting the jaw forward, preventing the soft tissues in the mouth and throat from collapsing into the airway. - Tongue retaining devices: T...hese keep the tongue in a neutral position so it cannot block the airway. - Hybrid devices: These both shift the jaw and keep the tongue in place at the same time. At Bridge Street Dental Cinic we offer dental treatments for snoring and apnoea, we will also give you a thorough evaluation and identify the most appropriate treatment for your situation. 05.01.2022 Holiday teeth care tips December is a pretty chaotic month for most of us and sometimes that leads to routine and habits getting thrown out the window. So we’ve got you covered with a few tips to help you through the craziness that is Christmas! That way you and your family can stay cavity free! TRY TO STICK TO A ROUTINE... Brushing your teeth twice a day is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease. For a lot of us, brushing twice a day is a habit we take for granted. But over this christmas period you could be going on a vacation, staying up late or just having people over and any of these things can easily disrupt your routines. SNACKING SMARTER If you find yourself having to snack regularly, try to limit sweets and sugary things to your main meal. That includes sweet drinks. Saliva production increases during a big meal and it helps to wash away any remaining bits of food stuck to your teeth. Saliva also helps to neutralise the acid produced by the germs in your mouth. If you’re looking for a snack, try and choose a healthier option there’s so many good ones! Cheese, sugar-free yoghurt, carrot sticks or nuts are all great teeth friendly options that will also help keep you feeling fuller for longer. STAY HYDRATED More acid makes your teeth more vulnerable to tooth decay. So try to sip on tap water throughout the day and limit your intake of soft drinks, sports drinks and juices. And make sure it’s tap water because it contains fluoride. ON’T FORGET YOUR DENTIST THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Holidays can be a great time for you (and your children) to visit the dentist. That’s it! I hope you find these tips helpful and useful to get you and your family through this silly season smiling all the way! Be Merry, stay safe! (02) 9247 5254 or send us a message.
