23.01.2022 EYE SPY at Bawdens Bridge over the Orara River. Built in 1874 this bridge is considered extremely rare. It demonstrates a true lattice girder bridge. These bridges are becoming more rare as they are replaced or upgraded with modern constructions. Would you believe its only 1 of 6 of the oldest lattice truss designs in NSW. Its the 7th oldest metal truss bridge in Australia.... You can find this beauty on the Old Grafton to Glenn Innes Road just outside of Grafton. #latticetrussbridge #rarebridge #BawdensBridge #OraraRiver #ALittlePieceofHistory
22.01.2022 CHALLENGE ACCEPTED ... We received these photos from @burningfront. Our task was to identify this bridge from these two photos. Well we didn't manage to do that even though it was on our back door step. Thank you to all who find our posts interesting and relevant to their work and interests. Bridges are our passion and pride so we are truly grateful for so many people's responses to our posts. We'd love to see the bridges you love. 21.01.2022 3-D PUZZLE TIME - Imagine the build here. Those piers curving in two different directions at the same time. Its like putting a three-story house right on top of those four piers. It takes a lot of steel to distribute that load from the bridge down into the piers like that. Complexity overload I'd say. Where is this big 3-D puzzle? I-91 BRATTLEBORO BRIDGE in Vermont. What you're looking at is called a quad wall pier system. An opening sits between two walls so that there are ...actually four legs of the column, which is supposed to have the look of a giant tree. Well deserved choice for #1 on the Roads & Bridges Top 10 bridges list. #top10bridges #VermontUSA #bridgepier #
21.01.2022 TWO VIEWS of the same bridge. This steel truss bridge is over 100 years old. It's seen plenty of water flow under its deck, especially during flood season in northern NSW. I guess that's good in some ways because the Orara River is the major source of water for the city of Coffs Harbour. Its funny how when we focus on a bridge we can sometimes forget all about the river underneath. Spare a thought for the river's overuse due to irrigation projects. This has led to siltation i...n the river, and the virtual decimation of the river's freshwater fish stocks. And guess what ... the name of the river is believed to be derived from Urara, an Aboriginal phrase meaning "where the perch live" #glenreagh #steeltrussbridge #OraraRiver #ClarenceValley #northernnswfloods
19.01.2022 DETERMINATION & INNOVATION ... the historic Kiskatinaw wooden curved trestle bridge. Built in 1942-43 it was one of 133 permanent bridges constructed to replace temporary crossings used by the US Army. The timber bridge is 3 spans and has an amazing nine degree curve along its 162.5m length. The curve was designed to accommodate the highway’s steep change in grade on the west end and the need to land at a notch in the cliff on the east end. At the time, it was the first wo...oden curved bridge to be built in Canada. Interesting facts: * An extreme cold snap during construction halted the curing of the cement poured to create the bridge's pedestals and piers. The construction crew had to enclose all the concrete and keep it heated to 22 degrees for 10 days. This was no mean feat given that the work involved almost 610 cubic m of concrete. * Creosoted fir was used it the construction. * The bridge only had a 25-tonne capacity. With the expansion of the oil and gas industry a new bridge was constructed to handle heavier and wider loads. As a result the Alaskan Highway was rerouted in 1978, bypassing 10km of old highway and this historic bridge. I've gotta give a call out to @timpurvis for these amazing photos. #timberbridge #Kiskatinaw #curvedbridge #KiskatinawProvincialPark #historicbridge

18.01.2022 LONDON BRIDGE ... apparently its never fallen down but its been rebuilt a few times. Of course the story of the London Bridge begins with those Romans. They invaded Britain and founded a settlement called Londinium ... later to be renamed London. The London Bridge you see today got its start as a military pontoon built by the Romans. Its a much simpler profile than the original bridge. ... The position of the London Bridge is a major connection point for economic development. Some interesting facts: bathroom waste used to drop straight into the Thames there was a stone version of the London Bridge that was topped with buildings - homes, shops and a chapel. This got a bit top heavy and the bridge had to be the vintage lamps on the bridge are made from the melted-down cannons of Napoleon Bonaparte's army there are rumors of - British bobby police patrolling at night #LondonBridges #Londinium #TowerBridgeLondon #bobbypolice #Thamesbridges #alittlepieceofhistory
17.01.2022 BRIDGE BUILDER FAMILIES ... These were often local people who lobbied parliamentarians for river crossings. The heritage listed wooden truss bridge across the Richmond River at Wiangaree owed its existence to such people. The contractors were usually father and son businesses and the whole family was involved in the work. One prominent family in building timber truss bridges in northern NSW was the Oaks family. Brothers Walter and Percy Oaks built three styles of timber tr...uss bridges in northern NSW - Allan Truss, de Burgh and the Dare Truss. Among their Dare Truss bridge constructions were two on the Richmond River in NSW northeast - Colemans Bridge over Leycester Creek at Lismore in 1908 and the Bean Tree Bridge near Wiangaree in 1927. The Wiagaree bridge was replaced in 2005 by a 7 span pre-stressed concrete bridge. 13.01.2022 RAILWAY REMANATS OR REGIONAL RAIL LINE ... it's a hot topic in regional Australia. This solitary timber bridge is part of the Mullumbimby to Murwillumbah section of railway. You cant help feel a connection with the history of rail travel when you set eyes on this. The structure, the patterns and the simplicity of construction. Time to move over cos rail trails are on the horizon. Rail trails are recycled from abandoned railway corridors. These trails mean different things t...o different people. One thing for sure is that they're not you run of the mill walking track. We're being promised eco-tourism, festival and employment. If rail trails around the world are anything to go by we're in for some amazing experiences. #timberbridge #railtrail #woyoung #abandonedrailways #railwaybridges
11.01.2022 CULVERTS ... take a look at a culvert inspection with the Bridgedoctor. How many of these you can answer. Let's look at the culvert structure. Is there evidence of cracking, abrasion, corrosion, are there any gaps or open seams. What type of culvert is it?... Has the culvert been extended? What is the condition of the oldest portion? Is there a line of sight along the crown and spring line? Is the culvert shape deflected? And that's only a small portion of the inspection. Bridgedoctors provide thorough, reliable and quality driven inspections. #concreteculvert #culvertinspection #conditionrating #qualityinspection #visualinspection
11.01.2022 CAST-IN-SITU balanced cantilever bridge ... It's a bridge built using cantilevers or structures that project horizontally into space. That means they're supported on only one end. If you're building a small footbridge the cantilevers could be simple beams. For a large cantilever bridge that has to handle road or rail traffic you're gonna be using trusses built from structural steel OR box girders built from prestressed concrete. The steel truss cantilever bridge was a big eng...ineering breakthrough when it first came on the scene. Imagine way back in the 1800's when a bridge could be built that spanned 460m AND required little or no falsework. All hail to Heinrich Gerber who built the first cantilever bridge in 1867! #cantileverbridge #EmigrantCreek #balancedcantilever #castinsitu #prestressed
09.01.2022 MEMORIES of the longest single-span wooden truss bridge in the Southern Hemisphere - Tabulam Bridge. Full of stories that will now forever remain silent. The bridge was delisted from the State Heritage Register and is currently being demolished. I started my bridge building career on this bridge in the 1980's. What a wild ride that was. More of those stories later.... Did you know: * This bridge replaced a privately owned punt at the site in 1902. * It was built for the large sum at the time of 16,000 - about $3.2 million in current value. * It was a 5-span De Burgh composite truss bridge. One of only 20 of this type built in NSW between 1900 and 1905. * The design used to advantage the structural features of both timber (strong in compression) and steel (strong in tension) and used natural materials as much as possible. #TabulamBridge #timberbridge #countrynewsouthwales #tabulamnsw #alittlepieceofhistory #singlespanbridge
09.01.2022 NEVER TOO EARLY to train up the next crew of bridge inspectors. Young gun at work learning the ropes. Level 2 bridge inspector training is usually a 2 day training course. It provides a basic introduction to the key areas of bridge inspection. Of course, this training needs to be accompanied with at least 5 years of experience. You're starting to get the picture I see. Experience the experience I say!... #bridgeinspectiontraining #younggun #nevertooearly #girder
06.01.2022 SIDE BY SIDE ... the old Harwood bridge is dwarfed by its younger twin. The new bridge over the Clarence River is only 20 meters east of the old bridge. It's 1.5 km long and 4 lanes wide. The new bridge eliminates the need for highway drivers to stop while the existing Harwood Bridge is raised for vessels. Did you know you can book an opening of the Harwood Bridge? You just need to give 24 hours notice. While the bridge is open for boats and other marine vessels, there's no ...access for vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists. #HarwoodBridge #openingbridges #ClarenceRiver #YambaPort #commercialvessels
06.01.2022 BRIDGE CONNECTIONS ... essential pieces in bridge design. Gusset plates are the riveted steel plates that attach two or more bridge elements. Essentially they hold the bridge together and eliminate the need for welding. Generally gusset plates consist of a triangular base shape. There are some special designs for extreme load bearing gusset plates that are rectangular and welded in the corners. These are also called stiffeners. Years ago, riveting was a common method for at...taching gusset plates. #gussetplates #steelconnectors #steelbridge #ClarenceRiver
05.01.2022 TRUSS BRIDGE... a structure of connected elements that form triangular structures to make up a bridge. The (old) Harwood Bridge was built in 1966. It carried the Pacific Highway until 2019. At the time it was built it was the 3rd longest bridge in NSW. The last ever steel truss bridge constructed by the Dept. of Main Roads. So what exactly is a truss and what does it do?... Trusses are the triangles in the structure. They connect to the top and bottom cord and two end posts. Given that a triangle cannot be distorted by stress a truss can support large loads over large spans. Trusses... cannot be distorted by stress even the load bearing across the bridge disperse the load through the bridge so the middle of the beam experiences less compression and tension commonly used in covered bridges, railroad bridges and military bridges #oldbridges #ClarenceRiver #steeltruss #Harwood #connectedelements
04.01.2022 UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL ... just watch in amazement as the bridge opens. Boats and other marine vessels pass through Harwood Bridge to access Harwood Island on the Clarence River in NSW. Harwood Bridge is a two-lane steel truss bridge with a closed vertical clearance of 8.1m above mean high water and an open vertical clearance of 36.1 metres above MHW. The width between the fender piles is 30.4 metres.... Other opening bridges in NSW are: Spit Bridge Batemans Bay Bridge Hexam Bridge Narooma Bridge Swansea Bridge #openingbridge #HarwoodBridge #steeltruss #ClarenceRiverNSW
02.01.2022 RIVETED CONNECTIONS ... From the beginning of structural steel construction until around the 1950s steel bridges were riveted structures. Rivets were used for joining members and for forming cross sections by joining the section elements such as webs and flanges. Rivets are often a location of accelerated corrosion, especially the heads of rivets. ... Just remember though - thousands of these bridges are still fulfilling the function they were originally built for #bridgepreservation #rivets #historicbridge #roadrailbridge #grafton #thebridgedoctor
01.01.2022 MOODINESS OVERLOAD ... We all know the objective of a bridge design is to produce a safe, functional bridge. Did you also know that bridge designers aim for a natural, simple and original design. One that fits in with the the bridges' surroundings. Aesthetics is an integral part of bridge design. Looking under the bridges over the Brunswick River and you can see design aesthetics in action. This view into the hinterland behind Brunswick Heads is perfect.... I hope the designers of these 3 bridges get to see this view and the beauty they created. You can read all about forms and aesthetics of bridges here https://bit.ly/3otj21O #BrunswickRiver #designaesthetics #triplebridge #structuralconsideration
