15.01.2022 The establishment of the largest military airfield in the southern hemisphere occurred here at Tocumwal in 1942 with the acquisition of land and construction of... hundreds of buildings for the United States Army Air Corps by the Allied Works Council. The most noteworthy buildings constructed were seven large aircraft hangars to be used for heavy bomber maintenance. Three of these hangars remain standing at Tocumwal and remain in use. With a span of 130 feet (39.6 metres), they are the longest clear span gable shaped timber truss buildings known in Australia.
