BRIDGETOWN Cricket Club won its fourth successive premiership when it defeated Pemberton by 4 wickets in the 2019/20 Warren Blackwood Cricket Association season grand final on Saturday in Bridgetown. Pemberton won the toss and batted first under a cloudy sky. Veteran seamer Kimberley Gardiner (2-25) had the visitors in early trouble when he dispatched Anthony Ellis (2) and Peter Bamess (1) in quick succession to leave the score at 2-6 after eight overs. Pemberton skipper Gary Mills played a lone hand top scoring with 49 before he was bowled by Mitchell Clothier (2-12) as the Bulldogs bowling attack applied consistent pressure to make scoring difficult. Pemberton scrambled their way to 104 and were bowled out from the final ball of their 45 overs. Simon Duncan (2-14), Darcy Walsh (1-20) and Shane Glancy (1-27) shared the other wickets. In reply the Bulldogs were off to a shaky start as Matt Tassos snicked Brendon Peet (1-12) through to keeper Mills and departed for a duck. Hugh Mitchell continued his imposing form clubbing 65 in a partnership of 90 for the second wicket with Darren Tassos (23 not out) to take the Bulldogs within striking distance of victory. Mitchell’s departure to Dan Moynihan (1-29) sparked a middle order collapse as Sam Tempra (4-19) ripped through Tom Sherwell (4), Clothier (0), Brayden Watkins (2) and Shane Glancy (0) to give Pemberton a sniff of an upset win. Five wickets fell for 12 runs in half an hour of carnage before Walsh (3 not out) snicked Tempra through the slips to bring up the win for the home side. Eight of Bridgetown’s winning team have played in the four premierships in a row including skipper Shane Glancy, Mitchell Clothier, Simon Duncan, Kimberley Gardiner, Darren Tassos, Matt Tassos, Tom Sherwell and Ben McAlinden.

BRIDGETOWN STILL ON TOP BRIDGETOWN remains at the top of the Warren Blackwood Cricket Association ladder after defeating Forestry by 86 runs in the Round 11 clash at Bridgetown on Saturday. Forestry won the toss and had no hesitation electing to bat in hot and humid conditions. The visitors were off to a sketchy start when Mitchell Clothier had Kallan Fall caught behind for a duck, presenting keeper Tom Sherwell with the first of four dismissals for the match. Simon Duncan then bowled Jared Johnston for 1 and soon after Daniel Ward departed for 10 spooning a catch to mid-on off Darcy Walsh. This left Forestry’s top order in tatters and saw them teetering at 3-14 in the seventh over. Bridgetown’s bowlers continued to apply consistent pressure with wickets falling regularly in the middle overs. At 7/54 Forestry looked like falling short of the team ton but Matt Johnston played steadily for 22 not out and the rest of the tail wagged enough for Forestry to compile 109 all out in 38.1 overs. Bridgetown’s attack shared with the wickets with Duncan (2-3), Clothier (2-16), Walsh (2-17) and Kyle Wilson (2-22) claiming the bulk of the scalps. In reply, the Bulldogs got off to a shaky start when stand in skipper Hugh Mitchell took on Fall’s arm and came up short, running himself out for a duck in the third over. Gardiner (19) and Matt Tassos (45) steadied the innings moving the score along to 2-39 before Gardiner holed out. Sherwell (40) timed the ball beautifully and combined with Tassos for a 79 run stand for the third wicket which took the home side past the victory total. The middle order failed to capitilise until Clothier arrived, hammering the ball for 25 not out. Bridgetown finished on 8-195 with Zack Johnston taking 3-46 with his left arm orthodox deliveries. This weekend there is a general bye before Round 12 commences and the race for finals berths gathers intensity.

BRIDGETOWN progressed to the Warren Blackwood Cricket Association Grand Final for 2019/20 with a comprehensive 8 wicket victory over Northcliffe in the semi-final in Bridgetown on Saturday. The Bulldogs will host this weekend’s showpiece event and will be aiming for a fourth consecutive premiership when they take on Pemberton who accounted for Forestry in the other semi-final. Bridgetown set up the win when they restricted Northcliffe to 112 in 44 overs. The Bulldog’s bowlers were accurate and applied pressure throughout Northcliffe’s innings. Darcy Walsh led the way with 3-18 off nine overs and capped off an impressive performance with a spectacular running catch to help dismiss top scorer Jason Treasure for 32. Treasure and Mason Abbott (22) provided a 45 run partnership for the fourth wicket before Abbott was bowled by Mitch Clothier (1/21). Joe Fontanini made 16 not out but he ran out of partners as the visitors lost their last six wickets for 32 runs. Simon Duncan (2/14), Kimberley Gardiner (2/15) and Shane Glancy (2/28) shared the other wickets for Bridgetown. In reply the Bulldogs lost Matthew Tassos for one when he was out LBW to Dan Bayman (1/17) in the second over. Darren Tassos (14) was the only other wicket to fall when he feathered an edge through to Treasure off Abbott (1/14). With the score at 2/36 Tom Sherwell joined opener Hugh Mitchell and the pair combined for an unbeaten 81 run stand for the third wicket which clinched victory for the home side. Mitchell was particularly punishing hitting five fours and four sixes in his unbeaten 71. He closed out the game with successive sixes off Phil Thomas while Sherwell stroked three fours in his innings of 25 not out. Bridgetown finished on 2/117 with the win secured in the 26th over.
