25.01.2022 Last night Ricco & Michelle drove down to Brisbane to meet up with Kellie Kadaoui, from a Rotary youth initiative Paying It Forward to begin preliminary talks about taking school students to Tanna to assist in creating healthier communities. Kellie has a great deal of experience, having taken many groups of students on meaningful and life-impacting student working holidays overseas. The students have participated in a wide variety of projects, and we look forward to partnering with Paying it Forward, and seeing the people of Tanna and the students receiving the mutual benefits and reward from working together. 23.01.2022 The 3 day Nekoviar Festival or better known as "The Toka" on the island of Tanna is one of the country's most significant celebrations and the largest gathering... of people in one place in Vanuatu. Nowadays, the event, which once marked the end of a tribal war, is a symbol of alliance, unity and friendship between different tribal clans. Its preparation takes several months, sometimes a year. The ceremony begins with a women's dance that lasts all night. This is called the "napennapen". A little before dawn, silence falls. Then, armed with strange sticks the men mimic scenes from everyday life. This is followed by other dancers, the Nao group. The dancers hit the ground in rhytm. Then begins the feast of pigs killed for the occasion and the exchange of gifts. See more

12.01.2022 It’s very difficult to wash your hands regularly with soap and running fresh water if you don’t have a tap. Now, a RAWCS - Rotary Australia World Community Serv...ice project, Hand Hygiene For Health and SPATAP Portable Tap, is tackling this problem in the Pacific. In 2012, Stuart Mason, a member of the Rotary Club of Noosa Heads, Rotary District 9600, stumbled across an idea when he picked up a bottle of warm water from the boot of his car to wash his hands and half the contents ended up on the ground. After much trial and error, Stuart developed a system called SPATAP Portable Tap, which enables handwashing and personal hygiene with limited water supplies, and yet is very portable and simple to use. A silicone fitting transforms any bottle or container made of plastic, glass or metal into a flow-controllable tap that can dispense water in three different ways depending on the user’s needs. The Hand Hygiene for Health handwashing project has already proved its worth in many underdeveloped schools in the South Pacific, but the need is great and there are many more schools that need our help. There are requests from communities across the Pacific to access this simple technology, especially now during the current COVID-19 crisis. Within Australia, the system has huge potential to address diseases like trachoma and diarrhoea in remote communities, where access to taps and water is very limited. 10.01.2022 Riccardo Yasso, the Bridging Health Committee and the Australian families, volunteers, and community are all holding EFATE close to heart today as they began lockdown in response to an individual in quarantine in Port Vila being confirmed positive with COVID19. All responses teams flew into action, and we anticipate a quick and positive outcome from the many months of preparations that the nation of Vanuatu invested in preparing for this scenario. Our love and prayers are with you all.

08.01.2022 The end of another very wonderful Sunday night fundraiser!! Was great to catch up with friends, family, members and passers-by in our front garden! Our thanks to work mates as well who keep turning up to eat, chat and offer help... grateful for your support. Some travelled from Yeppoon to enjoy the evening, which was so lovely, and was good to have so many from our Rotary Club come along too... and special thanks to Erin for working the coffee machine! It was fun learnin...g, chatting and laughing. To Renee Rieson & Ross, thank you!! You did the best chips and burgers... while Ricco cooked the best steaks! To mum (Diane Yasso) who made a huge chicken curry, and Uncle Adrian Little who made the other massive lot of chicken curries, thank you!!! Tamara, thank you soooo much for working behind the scenes inside, washing and cleaning up!! And a very special thanks to Lizzy Hiley, who on her birthday today, delivered very beautiful hand made Christmas bundles for our seasonal workers. 05.01.2022 Report from Director of Operations, Vanuatu: The track to the mountainous villages around Iatap are so steep and rugged that their mums find it difficult to come deliver their new born babies in the hospital due to rough rugged tracks which caused the trucks unable to go to these villages. For many years the communities have wanted the government through the department of Public works to help them build by man power which means the government supplies them with tools they bu...ild the roads but many a time there will always be not enough tools. This year there was a mother who delivered her new born baby on the way to the hospital. After walking for three kilometers at night, the men had to carry her down to where the road was good enough to picked up to go the hospital where they were given treatment and postnatal care. While there in July the TAFEA Public Works Department Manager, upon hearing that Bridging Health was distributing very good spades and shovels from Australia for the Traditional Gardening Project, came forward and asked me (Enneth Ilaisa) if I could supply him some tools to build an access road for Iatap, and more for the surrounding communities inland. I did not hesitate, as the risk to the lives of mothers and babies when they are born in the bush or mud is very high. Within days this access road was built by hand, and now Iatap and other communities will be able to receive medical help much quicker. Thank you to Pawanka Fund who funded the shipment of tools for this project and ‘Bridging Health in Vanuatu’ (a RAWCS - Rotary Australia World Community Service) for your support which is making our communities stronger!

04.01.2022 *In Bislama* Dr Basil Leodoro in Vanuatu, sharing about the emergence of their first COVID19 case, identified while in quarantine. Dr Basil has a wonderful way of always instilling confidence in the people of Vanuatu as well as encouraging them to be diligent in observing health practices that will help protect people from many sicknesses, not only COVID19. Dr Basil is sharing in Bislama, allowing our NiVanuatu families and seasonal workers in Australia the opportunity to hear his presentation in the familiar language of home. We hope this brings you peace. Thank you again to Dr Basil Leodoro for the part you have played in the lengthy preparations for this time, and for the calm and confidence you instil.

03.01.2022 There are many negatives about international border restrictions, but there has also been unprecedented international development within indigenous groups around the world, as access to assistance, training, services and even resources became harder to source. There are so many stories that have been told recently celebrating the ingenuity, resourcefulness, resilience and creative initiative as people groups around the world took ownership for caring, healing, helping and pr...oviding for one another behind closed borders. This is one of those stories! Congratulations to Dr Danielle Clarke for responding to border restrictions (and subsequent inability for Australian and NZ professionals to run training in Vanuatu) and creating a manual in accordance with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines that fits the Vanuatu context!! That is something to be proud of!

Our partnering organisations in Vanuatu will be delighted with these donations. Again, thank you very much!

02.01.2022 Most of us would find it very hard to grasp the impact of these pictures. 10 people from Northern Tanna have just been released from their quarantine period while waiting for their COVID19 tests to return their (negative) test results. The complete relief and joy of being back amongst family is encapsulated in these pictures. Daniel Ben Talap organised a welcome home ceremony yesterday to welcome them all back home. The families were moved to tears with the depth of emotion... that they were safe, healthy and back again with them. Daniel, bless you and thank you. We love knowing our northern families are doing well. We had to dry our eyes before putting this post up. Glad everyone is home and together again.
