18.01.2022 We don't need to tell you how crazy this year has been. You’ll notice that celebrations and activities usually occurring at this time of year will be done diff...erently. Including remembering our COVID-safe behaviours and following Public Health advice. Celebrations and activities will look different from school to school based on its size and the facilities they have available. But please remember the most important thing is keeping each other safe. Whatever your school has planned, please support them as they try to hold these special celebrations safely. #LearnersFirst #TasGovEducation

16.01.2022 Final Pre-Kinder Session & Enrolment Day Today's Pre-Kinder session was our final one for the year, with our focus being on the development of gross motor skills. Gross motor skills are important for major body movement such as walking, maintaining balance, coordination and jumping. These skills share connections with other physical functions. A child’s ability to maintain upper body support, for example, will affect their ability to learn to write. ... Students with poor gross motor development may have difficulty with activities such as writing, sitting up in an alert position, sitting erect to watch a classroom activity, and writing on a blackboard. Some activities which help children develop these skills include: Using stairs * Climbing * Jumping * Balancing * Hopping * Throwing & catching * Kicking a ball * Hanging/monkey bars

13.01.2022 Pre-Kinder Fun! This week at Pre-Kinder, we explored construction with blocks as well as practising our oral language skills by giving and following instructions. The ability to manipulate construction materials such as blocks depends on the development of a child’s eye-hand coordination, manipulative and fine motor control. Activities which can help develop fine motor control include drawing, puzzles, building, modelling, cutting, threading and pinching with tongs & tweezers.... Following instructions is an important skill for children to have developed by the time they enter Kindergarten. At around this time, a child’s receptive language is developed to the stage where they can usually understand and carry out instructions given by a familiar adult in the school environment. If the child can follow a three-stage instruction, e.g. ‘Hang up your bag, take your lunch box out and sit on the mat’, then they will be able to participate more confidently and successfully in classroom activities. An activity which may help with the development of a child’s ability to follow instructions might include playing Simon Says using three-stage instructions. Day-to-day opportunities also might arise during activities such as a trip to the supermarket (Please go and get me a box of Weet Bix, some Vegemite and a loaf of bread). Other simple errands can use three-stage instructions, e.g. Take the bowl to the kitchen, ask Dad to wash it and bring it back please.

11.01.2022 Children and Social Media - Useful Link for Parents and Carers We are aware that there are occasions when social media can place the wellbeing of our young people at risk. When this occurs, it is important we follow the advice of the eSafety Commissioner. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner encourages parents and carers to co-view, co-play, and ask questions about the games, and apps their children are using; and let them know you are there to support them if they are up...set or uncomfortable about anything they see online. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner’s website has a section specifically for parents which you are encouraged to visit for further information. It does include advice on supporting teenagers should they encounter content that is upsetting, disturbing or offensive. https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents We also encourage people who encounter such content to report it to the social media platform they’ve seen it on, or to eSafety at www.esafety.gov.au/report/illegal-harmful-content As parents/carers, if you become aware that your child/ren have viewed inappropriate or disturbing content and are concerned about their wellbeing, please contact the school for support. Please be assured we will continue to update you should we receive further advice.

04.01.2022 Thank You Parents of Bridport! Last month our School Psychologist Laura, presented 2 seminars providing education, humour and research on topics relevant to our parent community. The first was on how to help children and ourselves with worry thoughts. The second was on habits to improve sleep for modern families. With beautiful catering and gift bags of gentle reminders about the session contents, the seminars were well received, practical, engaging and thought provoking. La...ura would personally like to thank all that helped make these events possible, particularly those that attended and actively participated which made the sessions great! Laura says she looks forward to developing new, exciting seminars on areas of Psychology that our parent community would like to know more about in the future, to empower us all with awareness to healthfully handle life challenges. 02.01.2022 Pre-Kinder This week at Pre-Kinder we had fun playing in the Kinder Cafe, riding tricycles, building, drawing and doing cutting and pasting. We read the story "I Went Walking" and focused on another item on the Kindergarten Development Check involving sequencing. Sequencing is the process of putting events, ideas, and objects in a logical order. We sequence all day longwe divide our time into what we need to do first, second, and last; we understand events in our lives by un...derstanding the order in which they occur. For some children, sequencing can be a hard concept to grasp, especially when they are trying to tell a story. Using good key words like "first," "next," "then," and "finally," cue your child as to what is coming next. Reference: http://www.handyhandouts.com/viewHandout.aspx?hh_number=167 Some activities which can support a child in developing skills in sequencing include: * Use sequencing language when discussing activities planned for the future. For example, Your birthday was last week. Your sister’s birthday is next., or First we are going to the park, next we are going to the supermarket, then we are coming home. * Discuss memorable family events with your child. For example, Do you remember the time we went to the swimming pool? What happened while we were there? * Use your child’s drawings as a prompt for discussing past events. Fold the paper in half for them to represent something that happened first, then something that happened next.
