23.01.2022 Elder Abuse What is it? Elder abuse can be defined as an act that causes harm, distress or exploits an individual that is 60 years or older. It can be subdivided into 6 categories: 1. Physical 2. Verbal... 3. Emotional 4. Sexual 5. Financial exploitation 6. Neglect What Can Put Elders at Risk? - The intensity of an elderly persons illness or dementia - Social isolation (caregiver is with them all the time) - Elders role (at an earlier time) as an abusive parent or spouse - History of domestic violence at home - A child or carer with alcohol or dependency issues - Trusting nature / vulnerability for financial manipulation Preventing Abuse and Neglect 1. Listening to seniors and their caregivers 2. Intervening when you suspect elder abuse 3. Educating others about how to recognize and report elder abuse What You can do as a Concerned Family Member or Friend 1. Watch for warning signs. If you suspect abuse, report it. 2. Look at the elders medications. See if the amount left available matches with the date of the prescription and dosage amount. 3. Watch for possible financial abuse. Ask elder to check their bank accounts and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions. 4. Call and visit often. 5. Offer to look after the elder on a regular basis to give the caregiver a break - Let the elder know that help is available - Invite them to talk to you alone, in a safe environment - Show them that it is not their fault - Avoid being critical to the abusive person What Can I Do as a Victim? - Make sure your legal and financial affairs are in order. If not, enlist professional help to order them - Keep in regular touch with family and friends avoid becoming isolated - Speak up. If you are unhappy with the care you are receiving, tell someone you trust. Ask that person to report the substandard care you are receiving. Call the Queensland Elder Abuse Helpline on 1300 651 192.
