22.01.2022 Thankyou to Bob Perry for popping in to the bookshop today to sign our copies of "The Devil's Grip"! The Devil's Grip, by Neal Drinnan is a compelling true crime book about three murders of one of Australia’s most prominent sheep breeding families, (The Wettenhalls) and the secrets behind it. Bob Perry is a key survivor of the Wettenhall family drama and he assisted Neal Drinnan in writing this remarkable and enlightening story. Perry’s unique viewpoint and sharp memory of t...he Wettenhall family and the events that lead to their demise is at the heart of this tragic story. Perry is certainly a character and it was lovely to meet him. Neal Drinnan

22.01.2022 Honeybee by Craig Silvey (author of Jasper Jones) Our review: Silvey’s much anticipated new novel is a beautifully written, compelling, remarkable, heartbreaking, profound and ultimately uplifting story about 14 year old Sam Watson. It is a coming of age story about a young Australian teenager struggling with gender dysphoria and his identity. One dark night, Sam (Honeybee) stands on the side of a bridge ready to jump. Watching him from a distance, is Vic, an old lonely m...an. The two lay eyes on each other and a bond is formed. In that moment, an incredible friendship is born and over time we find out what brought them both to that point in time. They are connected by their misery, only to become each other’s saviour. I’ll be honest, at times Honeybee was sometimes distressing, with some confronting themes, but it is a powerful read that should be on everyone’s reading list( including teenagers). You will laugh and you will cry as you are pulled into this heart wrenching and heartwarming story. Silvey has the ability to make the reader feel all the emotion from every character. The characters are certainly going to stay with me for a very long time. Honeybee is one of the most powerful books I have read. It is profound and eye opening. It is brilliant. Highly recommended. 19.01.2022 Australian author and Miles Franklin winner Sophie Laguna’s newest book Infinite Splendours is powerful, heartbreaking and unforgettable. Our Review: Set in the Grampians area in Victoria in the 1950’s and narrated by 10 year old Lawrence, this book is filled with vivid descriptions portrayed by an artistic and talented Lawrence, who has a gift for painting. He lives with his widowed mother and younger brother and his promising future is laid out before him, until an exper...ience of betrayal takes it all away and Lawrence is left to deal with the devastating aftermath and the lasting trauma that then continues into adulthood. I will admit some parts of this book I found difficult and uncomfortable to read, but I think that was Laguna’s intention-in exploring such a complex character and situation. Tears still rise when I think about the pain and the power of this book. This is a brave and very powerful read Review by Jenny @ The Bright Bookshop. Allen & Unwin Books

16.01.2022 From the author of "A Man Called Ove comes Fredrik Backman’s newest book, "Anxious People". This is a poignant, whimsical and charming story about a bank robbery gone wrong, a would-be bank robber who disappears into thin air, a hostage drama, (in an Apartment Viewing), with eight extremely anxious strangers who find they have more in common than they ever imagined and, it's a story about idiots (Author’s words!) "Anxious People" will speak to everyone who picks it up - from... the anxious to the confident, from the broken to the loved, from the young to the old, and everyone in between. It will make you laugh and cry. Humorous, compassionate, and wise, this is an ingeniously constructed story about the enduring power of friendship, forgiveness, and hopethe things that save us, even in the most anxious of times. Backman has the ability to take such heavy topics about people and life and so respectfully explore them in a light-hearted way which is truly astounding to me. I loved it! 15.01.2022 Thankyou to our local Bright Author, Amelia Mellor, for signing our copies of her fabulous new book The Grandest Bookshop in The World! Our review: Amelia has created a magical world within a bookstore and I was captivated after reading the first page. Set in the 1800’s, this is a beautifully written, fast paced adventure filled story that is magical realism at its best. The Grandest Bookshop in The World is a bookshop based on the real Coles Book Arcade which was a famo...us institution, with locations in both Sydney and Melbourne. Coles Book Arcade in Melbourne was the grandest bookshop of them all. It was known throughout the world and was a destination for book lovers everywhere. It had a tea salon, real monkeys, talking parrots, a string quartet and various other curiosities amongst the 3 storeys of bookshelves which were said to contain over 2 million books. Mr E.W. Cole was the owner. He was eccentric, a visionary and a family man. His most famous book, Coles Funniest Picture Book has been reprinted many times and is still available today. The main character is Pearl Cole, who is the daughter of E.W.Cole. One day, a strange man appears in the store and Pearl begins to investigate the business he is undertaking with her father. This leads Pearl and her brother, Valley, on a fast paced race against the stranger, The Obscurosmith who has the magical power to wipe memories. The Obscurosmith’s magic is also draining the bookstore of its life. Only Pearl and Valley can save the family, their home and their beloved bookstore from a sad fate. They must play the Obscurosmith’s game, solving riddles and beat him at his own game. The fast pace is powered by the clock.....with the riddles becoming more physical and difficult to solve as the children’s memories start to fade. Will they make it through to the end of the game in time? I HIGHLY recommend this magical read for children (ages 10+) AND adults! $19.99 Review by Jenny at The Bright Bookshop Affirm Press

09.01.2022 J.K Rowling's newest book "The Ickabog" is out now and we have it in stock! "Once upon a time there was a tiny kingdom called Cornucopia, as rich in happiness as it was in gold, and famous for its food. From the delicate cream cheeses of Kurdsburg to the Hopes-of-Heaven pastries of Chouxville, each was so delicious that people wept with joy as they ate them.... But even in this happy kingdom, a monster lurks. Legend tells of a fearsome creature living far to the north in the Marshlands... the Ickabog. Some say it breathes fire, spits poison, and roars through the mist as it carries off wayward sheep and children alike. Some say it's just a myth... And when that myth takes on a life of its own, casting a shadow over the kingdom, two children best friends Bert and Daisy embark on a great adventure to untangle the truth and find out where the real monster lies, bringing hope and happiness to Cornucopia once more". Ickabog features full-colour illustrations by the young winners of The Ickabog competition (including 6 young Australian winners!)
