21.01.2022 For all those out there wondering what speech pathologists do...

20.01.2022 Today most of us will have swallowed close to 700 times We trust that food, drink, saliva and medicine will pass through our mouth, throat and oesophagus, arriving safely at our stomach. Yet for about 8% of the population, this simple daily act is a problem when food and drink get into the lungs and cause chest infections like pneumonia. Sometimes the problems are so severe that regular food and drinks can become a life-threatening choking risk. Dysphagia (swallowing diffi...culty) affects both the young and old. How to know if you may have a swallowing disorder? Do you cough while eating or drinking? Do you have trouble swallowing tablets? Do you avoid social gatherings where food is offered? Is it challenging to feed yourself? Is it difficult to swallow your own saliva? Speech pathologists are the best people to assess and manage swallowing disorders. If you noticed changes to your swallowing, we can help! #kiama #communication #swallowing #speech #brightfuture

19.01.2022 Little Mr Bright Future is at it again... This time spreading the word of Speech Pathology Week 2018. The theme for this year is: Communication access is communication for all. We love that we can help and empower people in our community. We are grateful to have such an important role in supporting Australians who have communication difficulties.... Heres some tips for successful communication: Always treat the person with the communication disability with dignity and respect Be welcoming and friendly Understand there are many ways to communicate Ask the person with the disability what will help with communication Avoid loud locations, find a quiet place Listen carefully When you dont understand, let them know you are having difficulty understanding If you think the person has not understood, repeat what you have said or say it a different way Try asking the person yes or no questions if you are having difficulty understanding them Ask the person to repeat or try another approach if you dont understand To make sure you are understood, check with the person that you have understood them correctly If you ask a question, wait for the person to reply Allow the person time to respond, so always be patient Speak directly to the person and make eye contact. (Though be mindful that there are some people who may not want you to look at them, e.g. some people with autism spectrum disorder) Speak normally. There is no need for you to raise your voice or slow your speech. *Source: Adapted from SCOPE, Communication for All Booklet, http://www.scopeaust.org.au #SPweek #communication #communicationaccessforall #brightfuture

18.01.2022 It is Swallowing Awareness Day today and I thought Id spread the word! Many people dont know that speech pathologists work with swallowing, or that we can wor...k with little babies with feeding difficulties. I spent the day today working in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with premature and sick babies who are having difficulty with learning to feed. Thats where the speech pathologist can come in! Regularly when I introduce myself as a speech pathologist to families of these little babies, I get surprise as "my baby isnt up to talking yet!". I am all for raising awareness (through things like Swallowing Awareness Day) that eating, drinking and swallowing are things that most of us take for granted but are actually very complex skills that involve a developmental process of learning. When there are things like prematurity, severe reflux, illness, injury, disability, developmental delays or other issues impacting the child, then feeding and swallowing can potentially become more difficult. If you are having difficulty with feeding your child, please speak get in touch with a speech pathologist who works with feeding. And please share to help spread the word! #900swallows #dysphagia See more

16.01.2022 Parent often ask me about the types of toys that are good for speech and language development. This study gives us some important points to think about: Interaction is harder to achieve with electronic toys. Book reading is beneficial, even for very young children. The bottom line... "When youre interacting with your child, aim for him to pay more attention to you than to the toy. The more your child engages in back and forth interactions with you, the more language hell... be learning, and the more valuable the experience will be." We are so lucky to have Kirstie and the team at Starfish Education Centre in Kiama. They have an amazing selection of toys that encourage back and forth interaction Lets not forget Kiama Librarys free storytime sessions and the endless reading opportunities

09.01.2022 More proof of the power of conversation, and this time its in the brain!
