24.01.2022 HOW TO GROW BASIL - give it a grow! WHEN TO PLANT: As soon as the weather is warm. Usually around September (especially for sweet basil, the kind in the photo) HOW TO PLANT: Direct sow or seedlings.... SOIL PREPARATION: Rich soil, full of organic matter is the go but don't use chook poo! WHERE TO PLANT: Basil loves full sun, but they don't mind part shade in really warm climates or extra hot days. CARE: Basil likes damp soil. Water in the mornings so the water dries throughout the day and doesn't linger on the leaves FEEDING: The more you pick the more you need to feed! Basil needs frequent feeding - something like liquid seaweed or manure is a good option. WHEN TO HARVEST: Anytime is okay, usually once the plant is approx 5cm tall. HOW TO USE: Use fresh on pizza and in salads. COMPANIONS: Tomato, eggplant, beans and root veg. OTHER TIPS: Pick often to ensure the plant grows lush and bushy and doesn't go to seed as quickly. 17.01.2022 HOW TO GROW EGGPLANT - give it a grow! WHEN TO PLANT: Plant seedlings late September December (after frost risk has passed) HOW TO PLANT: Sow direct or plant seedlings. Make sure to put a stake nearby (not too close to the stem!) so you can support the plant as it grows. No support = poor fruit growth. ... SOIL PREPARATION: Eggplants thrive in a fertile soil, rich with compost, pelletized poo and topped with a layer of straw. WHERE TO PLANT: Hello, fun sun! They hate frost so insure to plant once it's nice and warm. CARE: Like most summer veggies, do not like to dry out, so keep a close eye on the soil moisture. FEEDING: Feeding your eggplants with poultry poo granules just as the flower buds appear will make for a great crop. WHEN TO HARVEST: Depending on variety, between 10 14 weeks is usual. HOW TO USE: Bake, bbq, add into a curry, make a veggie lasange! COMPANIONS: Legumes, fresh herbs like tarragon and thyme. OTHER TIPS: They are cousins of tomatoes, so they love what tomatoes love but they can’t be planted where tomatoes (or their other relatives) have been for at least three years. See more

17.01.2022 HOW TO GROW CUCUMBER - give it a grow! WHEN TO PLANT: Start plants in pots in September and grow them under glass until the soil is warm enough for planting in October/November. HOW TO PLANT: They can be grown along the ground or vertically. On the ground, cucumbers are generally grown on a small mound to assist with drainage. Take care when handling the seedlings and water them in well to help them settle in.... SOIL PREPARATION: Cucumbers need a friable (loose), well drained soil, full of organic matter, especially compost. WHERE TO PLANT: Cucumbers like plenty of sun but the fruit can get sunburnt if the temperature is very high. Try shading them in intense heat. CARE: Cucumbers need lots of water, but they do prefer the soil to dry out a bit between waterings. Where possible, water only the roots and take care not to wet the leaves. FEEDING: Cucumbers are heavy feeders. Give them a balanced, organic fertilizer every few weeks and a heavy mulch to help keep their roots cool. WHEN TO HARVEST: Approx. 8 to 10 weeks after planting. Regular picking helps more to be produced. HOW TO USE: Salads, juices, in water, facial COMPANIONS: Chives, corn, Jerusalem artichoke, peas, sunflower, tomatoes, celery, lettuce, nasturtium OTHER TIPS: Cucumbers are prone to fungal diseases, so try to keep their leaves dry when watering. If you must water the leaves, do it in the morning so there's plenty of time throughout the day for the leaves to dry. #communitygarden #gardeningtips #urbanpatch #saurbanfood #garden #ediblegarden #climate #foodsecurity #food #regenerativeagriculture #permaculture

16.01.2022 What's better than banana pancakes? ...banana fertiliser? ....maybe...? Banana water: Soak a fresh banana peel in water for a day or two. Thenuse the water with the leached nutrients in it!... Compost it: Chop up banana peels andadd to your compost or worm farm...The microbes will help turn this nutrient-rich organic matter into plant food. Dig it: Chop it up and add it straight into the soil around other plantsto build up the organic matter and attract worms.

Good news is the health benefits are more or less the same in curly parsley and flat, so it’s really a matter of what your recipe calls for (or your personal preference). A few benefits of dear Parsley:... Parsley contains anti-cancer compounds It’s good for our blood and bones: For this parsley benefit, we’ve got vitamin K to thank. Flights inflammation Parsley helps because it’s high in antioxidants like vitamin C, A, and E Freshens breath

14.01.2022 So I hear you want to grow something a bit more exotic? Adelaides relatively mild climate allows many subtropical fruits to be grown here (with a little bit of care early on) Now is the perfect time to plant subtropicals while the soil is warm and the day time temperatures are more consistent ... Strong winds and hot afternoon sun are the enemy of subtropicals in Adelaide. These will dry the leaves causing them to burn and fall, exposing fruit and branches to sunburn in summer and cold in winter. So pick the most protected spot in your garden ideally with some arvo shade, and consider building a temporary shade structure for the first couple years Some of our favourites and easiest to grow include: - citrus - guava - mango - banana - papaya - macadamia - avocado (bit late now) Let us know what you’ve growing! . . #garden #gardening #fruit #trees #tropical #subtropical #food #plants #organic #homegrown #growyourownfood #sustainable #sustainability #permaculture #community #communitygarden #adelaide #southaustralia See more

12.01.2022 HOW TO GROW TOMATOES - give it a grow! WHEN TO PLANT: After the last frost. Once the weather is more consistently warm. HOW TO PLANT: Tomatoes can be grown in a good-sized pot as well as a garden bed. Raise seedlings in the cooler months in a warm environment (like a window sill or greenhouse) until you can plant them out. Plant the seedling deep so more roots will establish. ... SOIL PREPARATION: Lots of compost and manure is good. WHERE TO PLANT: Full sun is best, but make sure to give them some protection with a shade cloth during our heatwaves. CARE: Never ever let the soil dry out with tomatoes, especially during the flowering and fruiting stages! FEEDING: Feeding tomatoes is pretty unnecessary at first, especially if you have prepared your soil well. An organic seaweed granule is good right before the peak of summer to help them through the very hot days. WHEN TO HARVEST: Roughly... the bigger varieties take between 10 -14 weeks to mature, while the little cherry tomatoes take about 11-13 week HOW TO USE: Sauces, fresh in salad, ontop of pizza, sundried...so. many. ways. COMPANIONS: Capsicum, basil, marigolds, carrots, chives. OTHER TIPS: Stake them and support them! All toms, even the tiny ones and the pot-bred varieties will benefit from staking.

11.01.2022 T A K I N G A B R E A T H E R Well, our management group will be taking a bit of a breather over the next month. Is been a funny year, right? We are going to take the next few weeks to restock, make a few plans for the new year and most importantly - enjoy the garden! We are planning to hold an AGM in late January (better late than never, right?), where we will make a few revisions to our constitution (so it's more specific and clear), we will also be revisiting some of the... educational workshops we had planned for this year to see if we can fit them into the 2021 calendar. In the meantime, is there anything you'd like to see at the garden in 2021? If you would like to start a project or get involved let us know! All the very best for Christmas, for family time, for the slow days and busy days and of course, for the brand new year.

11.01.2022 HOW TO GROW CORN - give it a grow! WHEN TO PLANT: Sow your corn once the weather is consistently warm and all danger of frost has passed. HOW TO PLANT: Sweet corn seeds can appear shrunken and shriveled; before they can germinate, they must slowly plump up with water. To help them along, soak dry seeds in water at room temperature overnight before planting. Sow seed into moist soil 5-7 mm deep, 25cm apart, with 60cm spacing between rows. Plant 2-3 se...eds per hole and thin out unwanted seedlings later. SOIL PREPARATION: Add lots of compost and well-rotted manure to your soil before planting and dig it through well. After, you can add some blood and bone, rake it through, water well and let it sit for a week before planting. Also try planting sweet corn after a green manure crop. WHERE TO PLANT: You need a fair amount of space to grow corn, because it’s wind pollinated so you need a decent amount of plants to get a high enough pollination rate. They enjoy full sun and somewhere protected from strong winds. CARE: Corn needs lots of water, especially towards the end of the growing season when the cobs are ripening and swelling. The only time you shouldn’t over-water is when after you first plant the seeds. Your corn plants may develop side shoots called suckers. It was once thought that suckers should be removed, but now it’s widely accepted that it’s better not to remove them. Breaking them off creates wounds that can allow diseases to enter the plant. Suckers have no real effect on the main stalk and larger suckers may even help provide the main stalk with nutrients. FEEDING: Start with a well-prepared bed and then feed again when the flowers appear. A nitrogen-rich feed like manure tea is ideal. Mound compost around your stalks to provide them extra nutrients. WHEN TO HARVEST: When the silks start to die and turn brown, your corn is probably ripe. Stick your nail into one of the kernels, if the liquid that comes out is clear, leave them a little longer. If its milky; its time to harvest. HOW TO USE: BBQ, roast with butter and garlic, or eat raw when super fresh, in a salad COMPANIONS: Beans, cucumber, peas, potatoes, pumpkin, squash, melons, parsnip, zucchini. OTHER TIPS: Make sure to plant enough corn plants, 12 plants is probably the smallest you can go, but the fertilization rates will be much better if you have space for 40 80 plants. If you plan to save your seeds for next year, you’ll need to have at least 40 plants to maintain genetic variety. #communitygarden #gardeningtips #urbanpatch #saurbanfood #garden #ediblegarden #climate #foodsecurity #food #regenerativeagriculture #permaculture
