Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our community newspaper throughout what has been an incredibly challenging year for everyone. We really appreciate all the fantastic input from community leaders, organisations, schools, businesses and individuals, and the amazing feedback from residents and others from within our region. When you travel to the state, the conditions that apply to you depend on where you have spent time before arriving. All areas outside of Tasmania are now assessed as either low, medium or high risk. 22.01.2022 RESIDENTS OF OUR MUNICIPALITY PLEASE NOTE: A total fire ban has been issued by Tasmania Fire Service for Brighton Municipality and other regions in Tasmania until 2am tomorrow. This means that: (a) No fires can be lit in the open air on any land for any purpose except those used in fire suppression by Tasmania Fire Service, Sustainable Timber Tasmania and Parks and Wildlife Service.... (b)The occupier of the land where a fire occurs during this declaration shall immediately, after becoming aware of the fire: (i) Take diligent steps to extinguish the fire or to prevent it from spreading; and (ii) Report the fire to Tasmania Fire Service by calling ‘000’. (c) All fire permits granted will be suspended for the duration of the ban. (d) No fire permits will be issued during this declaration. (e) Gas stoves and gas or electric barbecues may be used provided they are clear of flammable material for a distance of one metre. (f) Operators of machinery are to comply with the TFS machinery Operations Guideline. Operation of machinery in or within close proximity of dry vegetation is to cease between the hours of 10am through to 8pm on 11 January 2020.

19.01.2022 Bridgewater Police & Community Youth Club's trainee Arielle Abrahams has been presented with Skills Tasmania's school-based Trainee of the Year award. Arielle has been volunteering with PCYC for three years and undertook a certificate III in community services which she began when she was in Year 11 and finished in June this year. Sammi Sutcliffe also won the Tasmanian Young Achiever Awards 2020 People's Choice Award. Well done Arielle, Sammi, and BPCYC. Fabulous team effort. 18.01.2022 PETE'S Community Work Shed run by Jordan River Service Inc on Sorell Street in Bridgewater has been providing a safe workspace for anyone in the community to tinker or build for many years. Recently Pete's Shed held a barbecue and invited community members to attend as a way of thanking people for their support and to encourage new people to learn more about what the Shed offers. Local Labor Members, Rebecca White, Craig Farrell and Jen Butler, have been long-time supporters of the Shed and were happy to help with its fundraising efforts by buying some of their handcrafted wares.

17.01.2022 Brighton Municipality Businesses: A new Tasmanian Small Business Advice for Recovery Grant program has been launched to directly help small businesses engage an appropriate consultant to provide advice or services to assist businesses recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The new program opened for applications at midday today and will close on Monday, 22 February next year. A total $1.5 million, unspent from the second round of the Business Continuity Grant Program is available through this new program with successful applicants to receive a one-off grant payment of $750. 17.01.2022 Brighton Mayor Tony Foster, who is Tasmania's longest-serving Mayor, has announced that he will retire on June 30, 2021. Mayor Foster who has been on Council for 35 years the past 27 years of which as Mayor of Brighton, announced his decision to fellow Councillors at a meeting of the Ordinary Council last night. Brighton Community News passes on its condolences to Wayne and his family and at the same time recognises the community commitment of Lyn who worked hard for our Municipality despite battling illness. 01.01.2022 THE second phase of Brighton Council’s Bridgewater Parkland project is expected to be completed early next year. The Bridgewater Parkland Master Plan 2016-2026 was endorsed by Brighton Council following extensive stakeholder and community consultation with the first phase opening to the community two years ago. Senator Claire Chandler along with Brighton Mayor Tony Foster recently viewed progress on the second phase. Senator Chandler and Cr Foster were joined by Brighton Council’s senior project engineer Callum Pearce-Rasmussen, right, with construction on the Parkland in the background.
