25.01.2022 Hurlstone Street was named after the Hurlstone brothers, Peter and Alfred, who in 1844 built a flour mill on the corner of Union Street and Hawthorn Road. It was the first mill in Brighton and one of the earliest to be built outside of Melbourne. The Hurlstones' mill played an important role in the growth of early Brighton - it was said that wheat taken there in the morning became scones on the settler's table for tea! #StreetsOfBrighton Illustration of the Hurlstone mill, 1909. BHS collection.

25.01.2022 During our talk on Friday, somebody asked a question about whether there had ever been a French presence in Brighton. Brighton did indeed have French migrants, including Monsieur and Madame Liet, whose home on the north-east corner of Hampton and Dendy Streets was a little island of French culture during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 25.01.2022 Did you know that patting a dog or cat has therapeutic benefits? It's been a stressful week for many, so here's an old favourite snap that we hope will give you a smile: Brighton Beach's Royal Terminus Hotel owner Henry Kemp enjoying some sun with his dog Shot. Photo of Henry Kemp and dog in the garden of the Royal Terminus Hotel, c. 1899-1913. BHS collection.

24.01.2022 June 3 is #WorldBicycleDay! Do you recognise this Brighton-born bike-rider? (Hint: she's better known for her art than her cycling!) State Library of Queensland

24.01.2022 What's the scandal with this Bayside restaurant's 1962 wine list? Established in 1954, The Troika Restaurant and Cabaret at 17 Beach Road was unlicensed until 1969 and was infamous for selling wine under the table! In the event the police came calling, diners were warned to hide their glasses in their bags or make a quick dash for the back exit. Thanks to everyone who joined us yesterday for our virtual Night on the Town - it was wonderful to see so many people online!... Troika Restaurant and Cabaret wine list, 1962. BHS collection.

23.01.2022 Ordinarily today we would be welcoming visitors into our rooms in the old Brighton Town Hall as part of #OpenHouseMelbourne. While our doors must stay closed for the time being to help keep our community safe, here is a little snapshot of a part of the Town Hall not open to the public the inside of the clock tower!

22.01.2022 These last few weeks, we've all had to find new ways to stay connected to the people we love. Here's one inventive way of staying in touch from our collection, courtesy of the Lovely Learned Luscious Ladies of Brighton! In 1990, twelve women working for the City of Brighton started a social club and a shared knitting project. Each member took turns to add ten rows of knitting to the piece, following a series of handwritten rules: the wool used could not be bought for the pr...oject (but could be "begged, borrowed or stolen") and previous work could not be altered. The ladies met bi-monthly over dinner at local restaurants and hotels to swap gossip, play games and share the progress of the knitting. They kept at it for eighteen years, by which time the knitting had grown to enormous size, until at last they decided to retire it and donate it to BHS. Quirky, colourful and filled with warm memories, it's a delightful document of twelve lives and one shared friendship. Learn more about this item on Victorian Collections: https://bit.ly/2WVQ8uu

20.01.2022 'Her own path' tells the stories of five early 20th century women with a strong connection to Bayside who were among the first professional women artists to eme...rge in Australia. This week's (trailblazing) artist in focus is Margaret Baskerville (18611930) Margaret Baskerville studied design, painting and sculpture at the National Gallery School, Melbourne and later at the Royal College of Art, London. On her return to Australia in 1906, Baskerville’s reputation as an outstanding sculptor grew and she is considered the first professional women sculptor in Australia as she was awarded the public commission to create a statue of Sir Thomas Bent which is located on the corner of Nepean Hwy and Bay Street, Brighton. 16.01.2022 Lest we forget. ANZAC hostel, now our Year 9 campus.

15.01.2022 Today we reflect on the many Brighton men and women who served in war, the many lives cut brutally short or irrevocably changed. This photo, taken at Anzac Hostel, Brighton in 1943, shows 58th Battalion veteran Alexander Dewar Kelley being helped into a seat in the sun by assistant matron Sister M. E. Flower. Private Kelley suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the face, hands and legs on the Western Front in 1917. He was left blind in both eyes and his right leg was amputated.... He lived the rest of his life at Anzac Hostel. Australian War Memorial 052019

14.01.2022 A lot of people would be flattered to discover that a local street had been named after them. John Binnie was peeved. "I observe a finger-post erected at the corner off Hampton Street adjoining my property bearing the name Binnies St," he wrote to the Town Clerk in 1909. "If this street is named after me, as I expect it is, please be good enough to instruct the painter to efface the final letter S and oblige." The Council did oblige and the offending 'S' was removed, giving u...s Binnie Street. #StreetsOfBrighton Letter from John Binnie to the Town Clerk, 27 April 1909. BHS collection.

13.01.2022 William Harbison was brought to Australia from Ireland by the lure of gold, but when the diggings failed to yield riches, he settled instead in Brighton. From 1853 until 1906, he owned a shop, two cottages and a timber yard on the corner of Bay and Cochrane Streets. The shop, Burgess House, still stands there today. #LostBrighton Harbison's Timber Yard and Burgess (Pekin) House, 164-166 Bay Street, 1866. William Harbison stands on the path in front of the timber yard beside a timber lorry driven by George Higgins. Grocer Edwin McLean stands in the shop doorway. BHS collection.

12.01.2022 Who can tell where this photo was taken? Hint: there's a school on the left-hand side of the road, currently celebrating its centenary! Railway gates, Brighton, circa 1928. BHS collection.

11.01.2022 We hope everyone's keeping warm on this grey, chilly morning. At least we're better off than poor old Mr Guest the grocer, who still had to deliver customers' orders during a rare Brighton snowstorm in 1951! Can you remember ever seeing snow in Brighton? Mr Guest, grocer, of 115 St Andrews St delivering groceries during a snowstorm, 9 August 1951. BHS collection.

09.01.2022 Macpherson's livery stable operated in Church Street from 1889 until 1913, around where the Woolworths supermarket now stands. Established by an early Brighton settler, Scottish migrant William Macpherson, it continued under his son John, whose novel advertising strategy earned him the ire of local cabbies. In 1907, John put up a sign beside the Church Street cab rank that read "Cab Rank No. 13". It seemed perfectly innocent except that 13 wasn't the number of the cab rank, but his business's phone number, duping locals into calling the stable when they wanted a lift! Interior, Macpherson's livery stable, circa 1889-1913. BHS collection.

06.01.2022 Lest we forget. Residents and nurses at Anzac Hostel, Brighton, opened as a home for permanently disabled First World War veterans in 1919. (Australian War Memorial P03098.005.)

05.01.2022 We love this salute to all the amazing, talented women who contribute so much to our community. Bayside's history is filled with remarkable women and we hope to see more of them on Council in the future!
