25.01.2022 Hello Fellow Bushcarers! Our next bushcare meeting will be on Sunday 16 August 2020 8.30am 10.30am. We will meet at our place: 11 Elizabeth Place, Brighton. ... Last month: We had another great turnout and our working bee tackled the remaining section of Purple Joyweed. You were all very good and practiced the required new COVID rules really well, thank you. We removed 13 big bags and created another big pile of the weed plants that will break down over time. This month: There is an area where we have found an infestation of Mother of Millions, just past the area we weeded last month of the pesky Purple Joyweed. We will check for any remnants of Joyweed at the same time to ensure we have removed all the weeds. We will be practicing social distancing again of course. All you need to bring is your water bottle, hat and cup. We have plenty of sanitiser available. If you bring your own cup we can practice social distancing afterwards in our backyard, Nev and I will be filling up your cups with coffee/tea after you place them on the table. If you would like to bring a snack you are more than welcome but you are not allowed to share..so don’t bring anything too yummy! If you can arrive a bit beforehand to allow for sign-on and a quick overview of the day that would be great. Please wear closed in shoes, and bring a hat and water. Any children must be supervised at all times by their parents. As part of the process we will monitor the health of the local fauna and flora and all observations of pests or weeds will be passed to BCC for action. We hope to see you next Sunday, Cheers, Jen & Nev Brighton Wetlands Habitat Group (BWHG)

17.01.2022 Hello Fellow Bushcarers! Well it’s been a while since we have all met and we are excited to see your smiling faces once again! Please see the attached photo to fill your Monday with cheer! It was taken last Thurs at an impromptu nestbox survey by BCC. Our next bushcare meeting will be on Sunday 21 June 2020 8.30am 10.30am. We will meet at the all-weather track behind our house. If you are unfamiliar with the location please send us a separate email and we can provide you w...ith more details. This month: We have a had a fabulous amount of rain yesterday and the wetlands absolutely loved it we are sure! Unfortunately the weeds do too.they think the last couple of months have been too good to be true actuallybeing left largely to their own devices. Therefore we will start bring them back into line starting with the garden escapee called Purple Joyweed. It’s certainly had a joyful time spreading like a sea of red leaves! We will be practicing social distancing but allowed 20 people like other activities. All you need to bring is your water bottle and hat, you can BYO your own pen for sign-on if you wish, but we have plenty of sanitiser avail. Unfortunately under BCC current guidelines we are not able to have morning tea afterwards yet.

13.01.2022 Hello Fellow Bushcarers, We hope you are all safe and well. We have received some communication from BCC about the recommencement of Bushcare and a long list of new requirements. There are a few questions we have asked back and waiting on a response. BCC are also going to supply new additions to our kit including hand-sanitiser; disinfectant and hand-soap, rags / paper towels, signage to place at front of working site etc. At this stage we do not have a time frame for receivi...ng our kit nor therefore a starting date for limited resumption of working bees. As soon as we have more information we will be sure to let you know. Nev & Jen

11.01.2022 Dear Fellow Bushcarers, Pls send a quick email to TMR to show support for a wildlife crossing bridge at Deagon Deviation You may be aware that TMR is planning an extension of The Gateway Motorway near Tinchi Tamba Wetlands. If you can, this is an ideal time to put forward your support to have a wildlife crossing bridge constructed to reduce Kangaroo (in particular) deaths. They are currently attempting to cross the Deagon Deviation where the traffic speed is 90km, endangerin...g human life as well. There is a specific email address: [email protected] . The project is The Gateway Motorway and Bruce Highway Upgrades project team (GMBHU). Please see below the email we have written, feel free to copy it or use as inspiration: Dear GMBHU, As concerned residents of Brisbane we would like to request a wildlife crossing/s bridge be constructed as soon as possible, to connect the fragmented bushland and wetland habitats from Tinchi Tamba Wetlands to Deagon Wetlands and Peace Park in Brighton. Macropods in particular are attempting to cross the Deagon Deviation Motorway. This motorway has a 90km speed limit and we feel signage alone is not sufficient warning or protection for wildlife and motorists travelling at high speeds. We request a wildlife crossing bridge to be constructed as soon as possible to avoid deaths of people and wildlife. Kind regards Jenny and Neville Kingdom 11 Elizabeth Place Brighton QLD 4017 Ph: 0439 746 905 You may know of our local kangaroo campaigner, Jacky Overington. We always support Jacky in her causes, both as individuals and Brighton Wetlands Habitat Group. You may also know of the FB page "Brighton Kangaroos 4017". Please pass onto anyone you know who may be interested in sending an email too. The more the better! Kind regards Jen & Nev Kingdom

08.01.2022 Hello Fellow Bushcarers! Our next bushcare meeting will be on Sunday 15 March 2020. We will meet at 11 Elizabeth Place, Brighton, 4017. The attached photo this month is from our member Tania, she has photographed a family of Curlews down at Shorncliffe, thank you Tania!... This month: We will again weed along the Northcote Street track just up from our last planting site. There is still a heap of the weed vine Mile-A-Minute going gangbusters. We have discovered a newcomer to this area, a weed vine called Crab’s Eye Creeper (Abrus precatorius ssp. Africanus) it has a whiteish pink or mauve pea-shaped flower followed by very distinctive seed which is bright red with a black spot, and are highly poisonous. This vine is a native to tropical Africa. It can grow up to 10 metres in height so good to rip this one out while we can. We will point it out beforehand, it is just near the Mile-A-Minute. There is also another weed tree relatively new to our area too, called Leucaena, it is just as bad as the Broad Leaf Pepper Tree and is coming up in abundance after all the rain. A good and easy one to rip out by hand while it is still very small. This is coming up mainly near and in the old paddock area. Last month: We tackled quite a lot of Mile-A-Minute but the mozzies found us if we stayed in the one spot too long! The boys toughed it out but us girls ended up going for a walk around pulling annual weeds as we went, still very successful! This Sunday we will have the mozzie spray avail as usual (Aeroguard and natural based Moov) we will spray our clothes and Moov is ok to put directly on your skin. We will also take a bottle of each with us to top up with. This method works extremely well. We will be having a refreshing morning tea afterwards at our house. Please feel welcome to bring along a contribution if you are able. We hope to see you next Sunday, Cheers, Jen & Nev Brighton Wetlands Habitat Group (BWHG)

08.01.2022 Dear Fellow Bushcarers, Local group Keep Sandgate Beautiful (KSBA) are wishing to create a new Bushcare Group in Dowse Lagoon, Sandgate. We are very supportive of this, as any activity that helps our natural environments in the 4017 area is a great thing! Birds in particular use all the natural areas around us. Would you please take a minute to email our local councilor Jared Cassidy and cc KSBA? Email to [email protected] and cc to [email protected]... KSBA would like to lodge their application to council by May. Please feel free to use the sentence below in support of the application: Dear Jared, I would like to express my support for a Habitat Brisbane group to be formed at Dowse Lagoon so that volunteers can help maintain and enhance the plant diversity that underpins a resilient habitat for birds and other wildlife. Kind regards (Your name and suburb) Some background info for you also: Keep Sandgate Beautiful Association is applying to Brisbane City Council to create a Habitat Brisbane group at Dowse Lagoon. The application process requires community consultation. Could you please pass on this message to others in your group who may be interested in indicating their support. For those who may be unfamiliar with the background, a community planting was carried out on the edge of Dowse Lagoon in October 2018 with a Council grant. Permission was given to maintain the planting for 12 months. At the end of that period, Council withdrew permission to work at the site, saying that work could only continue if it was part of the Habitat Brisbane program. The area that we are proposing, is the area between the water line and the mown area running parallel to Hoskins Street, starting with the area behind the bowls club that we planted in 2018 and continuing to the corner of Hoskins and Southerden Streets. We would continue to keep a focus on ground and shrub level planting to provide greater plant diversity to enhance the resilience of the lagoon habitat for birds and other wildlife. Late last year, KSBA received a Commonwealth Communities Environment Program grant. The grant has paid for a wetlands ecologist’s report on our original planting that has provided us with guidance on how to further enhance the lagoon habitat for wildlife and we will use as a guide to the work we will do if we become a Habitat Brisbane group. Kind regards Jen & Nev Kingdom BWHG

07.01.2022 Hello Fellow Bushcarers Just a quick thank you to those who were there on Sunday 18th July. We made a wonderful impact on the weeds in the planting area by clearing some and bagging others.... A total of 16 bags of flower heads and weeds that needed removal - great work everyone. Other weeds were left to rot on the ground as they present no problem once the roots are pulled from the ground The next bushcare is on Sunday 15th August hope to see you then :) Jen and Nev Brighton Wetlands Habitat Group (BWHG)
