12.01.2022 Inclusion matters

11.01.2022 October is AAC Awareness Month!

11.01.2022 Word of the day: "waitlist" As a parent trying to access services for their child, it's not a great word to hear, is it? As a therapist it's something of an anxiety inducing word as well, when your instinct is to help everyone who needs it straight away.... Amongst other things, Covid has certainly done quite a number on the availability of so many Allied Health services, and like most of them we are running a waitlist at the moment too. We are doing our best to work through this as speedily as possible and offer availability to our waitlist clients as soon as we can. The patience and understanding of the families we work with has been so uplifting to see and we couldn't be more grateful. Today's message to you all is... we will get there! Stay positive and answer those pesky private number calls when they come through cos one day soon it will be me calling to tell you "We have a spot!"

10.01.2022 One of the most common questions we get at Bright Start is "Do I need to see a speech therapist?" Many parents are unsure of when or if to be concerned with their child's development, is there actually anything to worry about, am I overreacting... Here is a detailed checklist that you can use to know whether or not you need to access speech therapy services. Feel free to share this with friends and family!

08.01.2022 Happy Friday to all our Bright Start friends and families! This week our lovely admin manager Lauren signed up to the Run for Autism charity run, although she will be riding her bike instead of running :) We are thrilled to support her in this, and the cause of every single person with autism being able to access the supports and services they need to live a positive and engaged life.... If you'd like to get involved yourself and raise some funds for your own run or ride, check out the website here, and put all that lockdown exercise everyone's been doing lately towards a good cause!

05.01.2022 If you've got a spare hour over the long weekend, check out this very interesting podcast episode from ABC radio on School Refusal. Great insights from parents, professionals and more.

05.01.2022 AUTISTIC MASKING....AT SCHOOL: Autistic masking is when Autistic people consciously or subconsciously hide their Autistic traits in order to blend in or to prot...ect themselves. Masking can occur in Autistics of any gender, any age and in any setting. At age 10, Autistic author Libby Scott (now 13) created this powerful image to describe the profound effects that come from masking at school. Be gentle with your young person and give them space to engage in their interests or other calming activities after a school day or outing. For more of Libby's insights ("It’s hard to hold your real feelings in and pretend to be something you aren’t all day") please see this 2020 piece she wrote specifically for teachers: (tinyurl.com/d0mjbcxg). For another Autistic young person's insights on masking and the importance of understanding and acceptance, please see this valuable piece from Autism Actually: (tinyurl.com/yahmcgej). [Image description: Crumpled up paper, unfolded, with black pen handwriting that reads: "At school I feel like a crumpled up piece of paper. When I get home I feel like I can unfold myself but the marks are still there from when it was crumpled. Like scars." - Libby Scott, aged 10. XOXO] Image via @BlogLibby on Twitter.
