25.01.2022 30TH APRIL - JOBKEEPER UPDATE Hi everyone ha, it does feel like "winter is coming" on a few fronts. We’ve been going pedal to the metal working on and wading our way through jobkeeper eligibility and enrolments so I’m sorry we haven’t updated FB sooner. To be honest, the ATO have thrown a number of curve balls at us from a "technical" perspective which have made this week - a rollercoaster! We are around 40%-50% through the list of our clients that have been in touch to as...Continue reading

25.01.2022 R U OK? Small Business Owners in Australia are amongst one of the highest rates of the population to experience mental health challenges. WHY?... Common traits of small business owners: 1. You work long hours and work intensely to meet the demands of your business; 2. You regularly work after-hours, blurring the boundaries between work and home; 3. You sometimes feel isolated and don't always have someone to share business worries or who can understand the demands of running a small business; 4. You are worried about cashflow and financial issues and what is coming in for the future; 5. You wear multiple hats - on top of this, you also manage the admin and government regulations on top of everything else; 6. You feel responsible - responsible to yourself, responsible to your family and responsible to your employees who all rely on your business being successful. In Sept 2019, a snapshot of mental health in small business looked like this: - 2.2 million small businesses in Australia - 57% of these business owners struggle with mental health (versus 1 in 5 of the general population) - 57% of business owners are overstressed - 8 out 10 business owners sacrifice sleep to make ends meet - Most are paying themselves less than the average Australian wage Add a global pandemic, forced business closures and a recession - the numbers don't look pretty for 2020. R U OK? If you are ok, are your business friends and colleagues ok? Remember, 1 in 2 business owners are not. One conversation, one question, can make a world of difference. The BFB team will always be here for you - whether you are a client or not, if you ever need someone to talk to, we are here for you. Sending all of our business friends, clients, colleagues and associates positivity, prosperity, strength and kindness xx Mel and the BFB Team. P.S. as always, please seek help or reach out to these amazing organisations: beyondblue.org.au lifeline.org.au

24.01.2022 MARCH BAS ALERT Sorry to bombard your feed today. Please be aware that the ATO has randomly bulk terminated a whole heap of March BAS's for businesses around Australia.................gah!!!! So if you login to your business portal your March 2020 BAS might say - discontinued! Yeeha, does that mean we get the quarter off?? Ha!! The ATO are working on getting this resolved - but it might not be until 8th May - what the??... We can contact the ATO and request that they escalate your BAS re-issue, but as of today, I can't give you any timeframes of how much faster it will be - sorry :( Lots of accountants and bookkeepers scratching our heads (and gouging our eyes out!!). For anyone that was due a refund (not just a credit) on their March 2020 BAS due to COVID19 cashflow boost (PAYG Withholding) - we would recommend that you contact the ATO to request an escalation or as always, contact our superstar support team (Kirsten and Shantrel) and we will see if we can work some magic (best contact is [email protected]). Seriously ATO............are you trying to send us over the ledge!! Mel and The BFB Team :)

24.01.2022 JOBKEEPER MAY DEC DUE 14TH JUNE Yeeha we are in June (said no accountant ever!!) and it's jobkeeper declaration time!! Declarations for your May claim which covers FN03 (27/04/2020 to 10/05/2020) & FN04 (11/05/2020 to 24/05/2020) are due to be submitted to the ATO by 14th June. For those of you that we are looking after - you would have heard from us (or will be about too) and you can sit back and relax ... For those of you looking after your own declaration, we recommend you submit this as soon as you can to expedite your jobkeeper payment from the ATO. This is completed on the business portal and is a simple declaration to complete and includes the following information: - Confirmation of eligible employees for FN03 & FN04 - Confirmation of eligible business participant for FN03 & FN04 - Your actual turnover for May** - Your projected turnover for June** ** reminder that when calculating your turnover for your declaration, you should use the same method you used for your enrolment (e.g. cash, accrual or other). If you have any trouble or make a mistake and aren't sure about calling the ATO yourself, please give us a call so we can help! There have been a few "hiccups" experienced by clients completing their own and we can sort this out direct with the ATO. Don't forget that when you receive your jobkeeper payment, we recommend this is coded to a separate income account e.g. COVID19 Stimulus and this is GST free. Happy job-keepering! From Mel and The BFB Team

20.01.2022 KEY BUDGET OUTCOMES FOR BFB CLIENTS Your feeds and maintstream media will no doubt be flooded with budget info..we’ve summarised what we think are the key planning opportunities for you and your business.as always, we will wait for further details, but here are the key points: - TAX PLANNING OPPORTUNITY # 1: The federal budget proposes to increase the 19% tax threshold from $37k to $45k and the 32.5% threshold from $90k to $120k. For majority of our business client...s, this will mean we can get MORE business profits out to you at an effective tax rate. - TAX PLANNING OPPORTUNITY # 2: If your company makes a loss for the 2020, 2021 or 2022 FY, we can apply these losses against 2019 profits to get a REFUND of 2019 company tax paid (definitely waiting on more details for this one!) - INSTANT ASSET WRITE OFF: As we suspected, it is proposed that the $150,000 instant asset write off is extended until 30th June 2022 - and it is unlimited (ie assets over $150k can be fully expensed). This takes the pressure off of making major asset purchase/investment decisions before 31st December this year under the old rules. - WAGE INCENTIVE: Wage subsidies up to $10,400 for employers who employ jobseekers aged under 30 and $5,200 for jobseekers aged 30-35. This represents a great opportunity to engage your next generation of key team members. - APPRENTICE & TRAINEE INVENTIVE: Wage subsidies of up to 50% of wage costs for employers who take on apprentices and trainees. Similar to above, a great opportunity to onboard new talent and skills. The team at BFB will work through these proposals and be in touch with any planning opportunities for you to take advantage of as soon as possible.

18.01.2022 9th APRIL 2020 ALERT: BFB JOBKEEPER As expected, the JobKeeper stimulus package was passed through parliament yesterday with little changes. Treasury and the ATO will be able to release practical details once this receives royal assent which we hope will be next week sometime. Summarised in our infographic is the flow of what businesses will need to do now, what we are waiting on from the ATO and payroll changes into the future. In short, there is a lot of admin work to d...Continue reading

18.01.2022 END OF MONTH - APRIL - JOBKEEPER CLAIM READY? I hope you are all enjoying the long weekend and safely out and about with some relaxed COVID restrictions. If the winds are keeping you indoors perhaps an opportune time to look at end of month for April! From Monday, you can submit your first jobkeeper claim via the business portal.... We haven't seen the claim form either, but we do know that you need to report your monthly turnover. So get that side of things knocked over soon, so you're ready to report once the claims open. On another note - treasury released updated guidance and clarification on some components of the jobkeeper rules late last night - AGAIN (because what else are accountants doing on a Friday night ). Admittedly, we are getting pretty sick of them updating/changing the rules of the game - but we also understand why this is the case, we are in unprecedented times and legislative changes are happening on the fly! The ONE IN ALL IN rule is absolutely clear that if you do not nominate all eligible employees at the time of enrolment - you are not entitled to ANY jobkeeper. This is an integrity measure (think a big stick) put in place so that there are no employees disadvantaged under the scheme. So we cannot stress enough how important this particular part of the process is. Who is a 'relevant employee" for jobkeeper enrolment purposes. The official definition is pretty vague! Subsection 10A(3) defines a relevant employee as "an individual who is an employee of the entity of the day the entity notifies the Commissioner of the entity's election to participate". So you need to look closely at who would be classified as an employee at the date you are assessing your eligibility. For some of our clients, this may mean seeking professional HR advice For example, if someone has been on unpaid leave for the past 6 months (e.g. taking a sabbatical), does this mean they are still an employee. What about someone that has been permanently terminated - at what date are they not considered an employee. We have seen lots of different scenarios over the past few weeks which on the face of it, seem like an easy answer, but technically, more too it. This is not something that we can provide advice on. What we will say - if you are not sure about an employee - don't risk it - get proper advice or you might face losing all of your jobkeeper entitlement. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Mel and The BFB Team

17.01.2022 BUYER BEWARE: COVID19 STIMULUS SHOPPERS It's been an interesting landscape in the bookkeeping and accounting world following the various COVID19 stimulus announcements. There are some "creative" advisors spruiking things like backdating wages and payments to get access to the cashflow stimulus, despite the fact that the ATO have released integrity measures to prevent this.... The team at BFB have been following this issue "behind the scenes" along with thousands of other accountants and bookkeepers around the nation working through what is correct and what is not because every business is different. What has been challenging is when our clients hear that their "friends accountant told them to do............" and when we say, no that isn't quite right - it can be very frustrating and disappointing. The issue has been so significant in our accounting and bookkeeping community that today, the ATO and the Tax Practitioners Board (who oversee Tax Agent and BAS agent licences) have come out to say - THEY ARE WATCHING & will take action - link here; https://www.tpb.gov.au//working-together-response-impacts-. This is a welcomed statement for those of us who are promoting the spirit of the law. At BFB our integrity and your integrity as business owners is paramount - we would never promote or recommend an action that would compromise this. COVID19 has far reaching impacts - we all need to do the right thing.

16.01.2022 JOBKEEPER 2.0 SNAPSHOT We've summarised the key updates to the extended jobkeeper subsidy below and in table form. More details will arrive in our Jobkeeper alert email - if you would like to join our mailing list just message us :) Current JKP to 27 September- no changes... JKP 2.0 extended to March 2021 Employee payments under JKP 2.0 will decrease. There will also be a reduction to casual and part time employee payments Under JKP 2.0, eligibility is based on decline in turnover using actual GST turnover not projected GST turnover Business to re-assess in October (for June 20 & Sept 20 quarters) and again in January (for June 20, Sept 20 and December 20 quarters) ATO to confirm JKP top-up due date extensions (for Oct and Jan) to give businesses enough time to re-assess eligibility Waiting on clarification on turnover from ATO including alternative turnover tests. As always, the BFB Team are to help and as further details are confirmed we will be in touch! Mel and The BFB Team

16.01.2022 BELOW YOUR BOTTOM LINE" After a few conversations in the past week or so about what sits below the bottom/profit line, we thought it timely to share a REALLY basic business budget & cashflow formula. When you look at your profit and loss, sometimes you might think hmmm ok, but why isn’t that cash in my bank account (if we had $1 for each time we hear this, we would have a fantastic xmas party fund!)? ... It’s because your profit is only half the story! Now we could spend days showing you fancy excel spreadsheets and working through your balance sheet (and don’t get me wrong we LOVE this stuff and you should too).but here it is in a very simple format: 1. Take your profit (bottom line) 2. Take off 25-30% tax from this (speak to your accountant for your % if you’re unsure) 3. Take off debt repayments e.g. business loans, car loans, ATO debts 4. Take off drawings (if you don’t take wages) 5. Take off debt reduction (these are extra payments on debts e.g clearing off that credit card, paying down a loan faster) This gives you a REALLY simple what am I left with figure to work with ie what else does your profit need to fund? You can then work backwards and this drives revenue and expense decisions (above the bottom line) which is the key to driving your business. Another topic for another post (that we equally LOVE working on!). If you’re not sure where to start, we have a simple, one page excel spreadsheet (no experience/excel whizz needed) that will help you put this together just email [email protected] DISCLAIMER: The above formula is simple and of course doesn’t factor in a whole range of things but our motto, keep it simple as a base to work from! If you want to get fancy, give the team a call and we can formulate a plan. What’s that old saying: If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Chat soon, Mel and The BFB Team P.S. we also don’t like to call it a business budget (yawn) we call it a PROFIT PLAN how much funner does that sound!

14.01.2022 WAGES SUBSIDIES ******EDIT: Payments will be backdated to 30th March (original post was 1st March)*********** Hot off the press, the government has announced the next part of the stimulus package which promises to pay $1500/fortnight for EACH employee in your business.... * Payments will be made beginning 1st May but backdated to 30th March * Employers must show they are passing this subsidy onto the employee * To qualify, must show at least a 30% reduction in revenue since the crisis began AND employee must have been employed with the business on 1st March 2020 (or been in casual employment with the business for 12 months) * Part time staff also able to access (even if ordinary wages are less than $1500 net/fortnight, they get topped up to this) * Long term casual employees may also be considered *NZ employees are eligible THIS IS NOT LEGISLATED YET! So whilst you can start to prepare the business for these payments, the proposal will need to be legislated. As we have seen with other parts of the stimulus packages, the devil is in the detail! The BFB Team are working hard to keep you updated.

13.01.2022 YOU ARE AMAZING I'm a silver lining kind of gal - always looking for the positives even in the face of adversity and yep, last couple of weeks will go down in the history of BFB as some of the most EPIC on a number of levels (save that one for another day!!). And whilst everyone knows how deep and far reaching this pandemic and the economic impact this has had on our lives, we haven't had to look far for some SERIOUSLY AMAZING BUSINESS LEADERS in our community and our client ...base. * We have medical practices within our client base who are literally rolling up their sleeves and saying to our government and our community, we are here for you, we are ready for you and we will look after you. For some this is going to mean going from a private practice to a pseudo emergency department as the medical capacity in our hospitals is stretched. They are sacrificing income and their health to save our community, some are self isolating from their own kids for gods sake. Seriously, if these people are not heroes, then I don't know who is - you have our utmost RESPECT! * Another of our clients is a provider to the fitness industry and has discounted services by 30% to help these guys out - that is 30% straight OFF the bottom line. Scomo has said we have to share the burden - this is a prime example of selfless generosity - we applaud your GENEROSITY * Many of our clients are keeping team and staff on their books, even the casual workers - despite the fact they will LOSE money over the next few months. When we treat our team like family, the rewards and benefits to our community are 10-fold and we hope that karma returns this incredible gesture in spades - we love how much you genuinely CARE for your teams We feel so fortunate to work with so many wonderful clients - you are truly LEADERS in our community and you have our support and our respect. Let's spread some GOOD NEWS business stories! Drop it in the comments below or email [email protected] if you or a business owner you know is doing some great things for our communities. Seriously, you are AMAZING! Mel and the BFB Team

05.01.2022 THANK YOU AND WE ARE HERE FOR YOU Hey everyone - what a week! First, thank you for your patience with us while we have fielded lots of emails, phone calls and appointments this week to discuss the current and short to medium term economic climate. This is unprecedented and we are doing our absolute best to get you the most up to date information. We are trying to support our clients with logical, practical and realistic advice - while trying to maintain positivity.... Short term - the economic impacts are cloudy - will this be a short term blip before we return to a "new normal" or will this be GFC relived for the next few years? Our advice right now - plan for the immediate term (the next 4-6 weeks) for your business. Most of our clients know what is ahead for this period. Conserve cash wherever you can. Beyond this, I would like to hope by then we will have some clarity around the short to medium term economic landscape and from there, make critical business decisions around cashflow and strategy. One thing is guaranteed in business - CHANGE. This too shall pass. We are here for you. Throughout the week, some of our beautiful clients have been very distressed - this is your livelihood and you have everything riding on it. I know this - I'm in the same boat. Despite putting on a brave face, it can be overwhelming. Please reach out to us. We don't have all of the answers - but sometimes just talking these things through is helpful. Importantly, lean on your family and friends. And finally - whilst we are all vigilant about our hand washing and social distancing - don't forget to look after your mental health. There is so much information out there. As a business owner, the stress and worry can be next level - know when to reach out to an organisation like Beyond Blue. Mel and the BFB Team

05.01.2022 We are taking a break to enjoy this special weekend with our loved ones and we hope all of our wonderful clients, suppliers, colleagues and friends are able to do the same. Stay safe, stay home and look for the positives everyday. Mel and The BFB Team

Some interesting key points on the eligibility and calculation of potential loan amounts: - Loan funds available to your business will be based on 50% of your annual wages expense up to $250k. Annual wages will be calculated as an average of your wages+super for the 2017/18 and 2018/19 financial years;... - Your business must have operated since 1st July 2017 - Up to $100k loans will be unsecured. Loans greater than this will require a security agreement - The funds MUST be used for working capital expenses e.g. paying wages, suppliers, rent, overheads - The funds cannot be used to refinance existing lending e.g. paying out an overdraft - The funds cannot be used to purchase new equipment/other assets Terms of the loans are favourable: - 10 years - Year 1 is interest free, no repayments - Year 2 & 3, interest only at 2.5% - Year 4-10, Principal and interest at 2.5% Of course any lending should form part of an overall business crisis strategy and the team at BFB can discuss this with you.
