23.01.2022 As we ready our children for the start of the 2021 school year, this is a timely reminder to be thoughtful of your child’s privacy. Have you considered the pote...ntial risks associated with sharing return to school photos over social media or having their name on public display? Consider the following Who else might be looking? What else might you be sharing? Who owns the image? Do not include in your social media post your child’s name, the address or suburb of the school they attend and only post greyscale pictures. 19.01.2022 I love the risk/resource model which focuses on helping us identify if we are overestimating the danger of something, for example ‘what if something bad happens’ type of thinking which is often related to feelings of anxiety! The resource part of the model focuses on our inner coping resources and the beliefs we have in terms of our ability to cope! Work on Increasing your belief that you can cope and get through things! I know this can be a very difficult process and you a...re worth it! It is very common to have a tendency to underestimate yourself! Next time you want to try something new or even just feel brave enough to engage in a task or activity- check in with your thoughts and see if you are underestimating your ability! Focus on your strengths and times you have coped and did ok! Keep practising and remember to be kind! Dr Jenni Clinical Psychologist See more

17.01.2022 Sleep and Autism The beneficial effects of a good night sleep for both physical and mental well-being are well-known. We know, for example, that sleep is the bo...dy’s natural restorative, where much physical and mental healing occurs during the sleep process. For example, anxiety and stress are processed during sleep, particularly between the hours of 1:00 AM and 4:00 AM. Waking well-rested allows the body to cope with the various stresses and strains that occur on a daily basis. However, research indicates approximately 75% of autistic people experience sleep problems, and these problems contribute to high levels of stress, anxiety and depression. If you or a loved one experiences sleep problems, I encourage you to complete the following four activities to help you further understand what may be contributing to your sleep problems, and to create a plan to improve your sleep. https://attwoodandgarnettevents.com///30/sleep-and-autism/ Join our November courses to see how you can help support the autistic persons around you. We have two courses: LIVE WEBCAST: Behaviour and Emotion Management for Children and Adolescents with Autism 5 November 2021 Autistic children and adolescents often struggle to understand and express emotions, resulting in high levels of anxiety, stress, anger and/or depression. Conventional strategies that encourage emotion management for typical children do not seem to be as effective for autistic individuals. The child’s quality of life, self-esteem and well-being will be influenced by their ability to manage emotions and difficulties with emotion management can lead to being suspended and having a notoriety that will affect the attitude of teachers and peers as well as the attitude of the child to themselves. LIVE WEBCAST: Challenging Behaviour in level 2 and 3 Autism 19 November 2021 Challenging behaviour, including hitting, kicking, pushing, shouting, biting, head banging, and other forms of self-injury, is distressing for the autistic person and their families and people who work with them. These behaviours can result in several social problems, including unsafe home, school and work settings, exclusion from school and community events, and burn-out for parents, carers and professionals. The Presentation is for: Parents, family members, health and educational professionals who see children and/or adolescents with Autism (ASD Level 2 or 3, for the classic autism course) as part of their practice, including psychologists, paediatric psychiatrists, paediatricians, GPs, teachers, teacher’s assistants, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech pathologists, counsellors, social workers, mental health nurses, nurse practitioners mental health, and developmental educators. Does your Child or Adolescent have NDIS Funding? If you are self-managed or third party-managed and parent education is in the Plan you can use your NDIS funding to attend this event. This live course counts for 5.5 hours of Continuing Professional Development or Teacher Accreditation hours. (For NSW Teachers: the course may be recorded as an elective PD with NESA). 12.01.2022 There are many Australians who have been feeling socially isolated long before the COVID-19 pandemic began. To respond to this growing sense of isolation in our community, Mt Gravatt Community Centre started the Ways to Wellness Project to connect people with meaningful groups and activities in the area to combat loneliness and improve their overall health and wellbeing. Our program was recently featured on ABC News along with other community groups in the Queensland Commu...nity Alliance - QLD. If you, or anyone you know, wants to take part in this program, please contact Elise Marr on 0491 625 869 or [email protected].
