25.01.2022 It's been a while since we posted a dashcam video. While the streets outside are Stage 4 quiet, take a lesson from these videos. Sorry for the bad language used. Its not us, its the drivers of Australia. 0:26 - When pulling out from any parking space and visibility is very bad, go very slowly so cars continuing straight have time to react to you. 1:17 This is a good representation of the one-side overtake only. When you are on the unbroken side of a double line, you cann...ot overtake usually because of a safety reason. We can see here that the car doing the illegal overtake can’t really see oncoming traffic over the crest of the hill. 2:21 Interesting to see here how far the impact of the collision pushes the car that is hit. Right into the intersection. An example of why it’s important to keep your hands on the wheel and be alert even when stopped. 2:58 Always pay attention to the lane arrows which will let you know directions you can go at roundabouts/intersections. 4:19 another reminder that trucks need extra space when turning, and have limited visibility alongside them. 4:38 An orange light means stop is safe to do so speeding up in an attempt to get through before a red light is illegal. 5:48 Always make sure you turn from the right lane, into a right lane, not cutting across the short part of an intersection like this taxi is. 7:02 you cannot cross double white lines to enter or exit a road. this break in the road allows for the driveway, but you can see here it is still very dangerous. 7:49 I like this one because you can clearly see that while the driver behind is doing the right thing by checking the road he is about to enter, his head is turned away from the road in front of him too long to keep aware of what is happening. Short checks to the left and the right when moving forward! 9:29 Large trucks often need (and are allowed) to use two lanes to turn. If you see a truck indicating, you must give way and allow it to turn. 13:00 Batman does what batman does best. See more

22.01.2022 Driving in Fog Mornings like today remind us of the importance of driving safely in the fog. Just like driving at dawn and dusk, this is a time of limited visibility. When we can’t see very well, it also means we can’t BE SEEN very well. To fix each of these problems, there are two important things to do. Slow down. This gives more time to see what is coming ahead, and more time to react to those things. Slowing down also means cars behind you will have to slow down. ... Remember, if the fog is so thick that you can’t see safely enough to drive, then stop somewhere safe off the road and wait for conditions to change. Use your lights. Putting on your headlights, in low-beam mode. High-beam lights can shine directly in the eyes of other drivers, and can also reflect off the moisture in the air. Even when you think you can see well enough, have your lights on so others can see you clearly. In addition to these two things, also make sure your windscreen is kept clear using your demisters & wipers, and minimise distractions so you can concentrate. Some things you may need to react to such as bends in the road, traffic lights, and other cars, won’t appear to you until much later than normal. Try and drive to the right hand side of the road/lane, rather than the centre line, to give more space between you and oncoming traffic.

17.01.2022 Hopefully work is still happening for some of you. If it is, make sure your employer has provided you with a permit to be travelling to and from work. If you need to be driven to work, an adult from the same house as you is able to drive you to and from (if this is checked on, your employer may need to verify this in a phone call).

08.01.2022 First time towing? It can be tough. Everything seems normal going forward, until you break and the trailer starts to push you from behind. And reversing? The first time I towed a trailer I only drove it forwards and took it off the car to turn around. Before you even hook the trailer up, check these out: Is the trailer registered on it’s own? or ...Continue reading

04.01.2022 In an earlier post, we advised that a learner was permitted to drive as long as it was for one of the permitted reasons for travel. This is no longer the case. DHHS have updated the advice to say that driving for practice is not permitted. Sorry to have to tell you this, I know it's hard to have no chance to practice during this level of restrictions, but we are all hoping together that if we do the right thing now, in a few weeks things will start returning to normal. The ONLY exception to this is for a learner who has obtained an exemption to be able to take a driving test. They are allowed one practice session, and to travel to their test. If you are doing this, you must carry with you evidence of your test booking. Contact us if you wish to know more about this.

01.01.2022 Dashcam of the week - a recent compilation from May (so during early restriction traffic) Apologies for the language and music. What can you see to learn from? 1:10-1:57 Three in a row that show the importance of checking your wheels and tyres regularly for any sign of problems 2:41 If there isn’t space for you to pull out, you wait, no matter how long it takes. 4:25 We could start a list of drivers doing unsafe things here... 6:15 There seems to be a lot of very dangerous & illegal overtakes in this months compilation we’ll look at the rules on overtaking in a separate post this week. 6:51 Remember, when you are facing a green light but with no green arrow at an intersection, you must give way to oncoming traffic before proceeding when safe to do so. 9:18 & 9:24 The Cyclist, and then the pedestrian are the ones doing the wrong thing here but it’s a good reminder that as the Driver, scanning the road as you drive and looking for vulnerable road users may save a life.
