20.01.2022 DOJO CLOSURE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE Hi everyone, In the interests of our members health, and as a precautionary measure due to the coronavirus pandemic, the dojo committee have made the decision to cancel all classes at Brisbane Aikikai until further notice. This will be at least for the next fortnight, but likely to be somewhat longer of course. So there will be no classes from tomorrow morning onwards (Monday 16th). ... I will send out weekly updates about when we expect practice can get back to normal. For those kyu grades that are wanting to keep up their training and are not sure how outside of classes, a good option is swinging a bokken in the backyard or at the local park. I have even seen some fellas doing exactly that at a park near me in Mitchelton from time to time. Or you can also practice reiho without a partner If you dont have a bokken, maybe nows the opportunity to get one, and if you want advice on what type to get or where to buy it, feel free to contact one of your instructors or myself. Take care, Tom Garwood BAJC

19.01.2022 Embodying aikido. "The most important thing in aikido is what is called yielding... If you can look at another person with an open heart, without ego, you wil...l be able to see the other persons situation: what he is aiming for, what power he is using, where his balance is, what his feeling is and so on-all will become clear. This cannot be understood with your eyes or trying to understand through intellect. You must understand in an instant, with your heart... The secrets of aikido can be applied to the behavior of people. By correcting your own position, and making contact with the other person with a spirit of yielding, you will be able to grasp his spirit. At that moment harmony is born..." -Gozo Shioda, Fr. "Total Aikido: The Master Course" pp. 204-205

19.01.2022 This is the founder of Aikido - Ueshiba Morihei -Sensei. The seated bow (zarei) is such a beautiful tradition. It symbolizes gratitude and respect. The founder...’s bow in this photograph is an example of how the bow is done not only with the body but with the spirit, as well. Budo is the training and forging of both body and spirit. Thanks to Bushin Dojo and Stefano for sharing.

15.01.2022 Dear All, We are pleased to announce that limited, no-contact training will recommence at the revamped and freshly-painted dojo as from 13th June ! :) Strict hygiene arrangements will be in place and numbers will be restricted so as to comply with health and safety guidelines. We ask therefore that you book your classes for the time being in advance using the on-line booking tool circulated to members by e-mail, and that you come to the dojo already changed, since changing rooms will be out of action. If you are thinking of coming along for the first time, you are very welcome... please just contact us in advance to confirm that there will be space and to make relevant arrangements.

14.01.2022 "When OSensei created Aikido, he broke with the traditional concept of martial arts. That is how aikido developed. Aikido is not for fighting but for harmony a...nd love. If you look at martial arts from the western standpoint, they are fighting arts. In Japan, Budo is known to involve mental and spiritual aspects. But here, people do not see it that way. OSensei created aikido to break through the traditional concepts of martial arts. It was a simple thing, his idea, harmony with the universe. You train technically to be efficient and precise. Accuracy involved timing and rhythm. So if you understand that timing and rhythm create a balance, then you begin to understand that we are part of the universe... If you only look at aikido like its a martial art, for purposes of attack and defense, training will be limited to those purposes." -Seiichi Sugano (1939-2010) 8th dan
