25.01.2022 Happy Friday Facebook friends! I bet you are all missing Dr Emma as much as we are - we were so lucky to have a visit from her this week, and got to meet her newest little bundle of joy Lincoln who came into the world in December! We always love seeing little Arabella too, who is growing up so fast! #bbevsfamily

25.01.2022 We were fortunate enough to be the recipients of a wildlife grant from WIRES, and we used that to help construct a wildlife specific caging area within the practice. This area sits adjacent to the reptile ward, and is easy to see, but sufficiently removed from the hustle of our normal clinical area that the patients can feel more secure. Thermostatically controlled, with adjustable heating, and very easy to clean, we are thrilled with the results. ... Thank you WIRES!

25.01.2022 Recently we had the pleasure of meeting Lily the guinea pig for a pregnancy check up! We confirmed that she was pregnant with three little pups! We estimated that she would be due to give birth 3-4 weeks after her visit and we are happy to report 3 weeks and 2 days later she birthed three healthy babies without any trouble! Check out the X-ray below and see if you can spot all the babies...

25.01.2022 Our lovely clients who made us the gorgeous scrub caps last week, dropped in some custom made masks for our team to wear while in surgery! We are so lucky, and absolutely adore them! Thank you!

25.01.2022 TUESDAY TIP Are your elderly furry friends feeling the cold? Heat lamps can be useful not only for our scaled friends to provide an appropriate thermal gradient, for feathered friends who are aged or unwell, but can also be utilised for patients who feel that morning chill and want to keep themselves and their ageing joints warm. These lucky girls have theirs placed externally at one end of the enclosure over the hammocks so they can move closer or further away depending ...on their personal preference. Here is little Misha in her hammock where she is heat seeking for comfort - doesn't she look content? Ratties love nothing more than a good snuggle! *please always ensure that if you are providing a heat source for your pet that there is no fire risk or direct contact with the animal.

24.01.2022 Last weekend was International Veterinary Day! Since we are still split into 2 teams due to COVID-19, each nurse team put together some wonderful surprises to spoil their team of vets. We think this bunch are the hardest working and kindest vets around and we wouldn't ever trade them!

23.01.2022 Tuesday Tip! Snakes can appreciate the opportunity to burrow into substrate. Here, Diesel the Black-Headed Python waits in ambush.

22.01.2022 Shop Update! Hi guys, Winter is officially here in Brissy so it's time to think about keeping those ratties warm as temperatures drop, particularly overnight. ...I've restocked Brisbane Bird & Exotics Vet (linked below) for all your hammock needs! Don't forget old newspaper is a ratties best friend through winter as it provides not only an enrichment item that encourages natural nesting behaviours, but added insulation and warmth. I fill all my hammocks with torn up sheets of newspaper, and if you put your hand into the hammock you immediately feel the warmer temperature. Ahh so cosy Change the newspaper out regularly to avoid ammonia build up and see the tag on your newly purchased hammock for hammock care instructions. Hoping you're all staying warm and healthy, Sandra & the ratties xo BBEVS hours: Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 6.30pm Friday 8.30am to 6pm Saturday 8.30am to 12pm Sunday & Public Holiday CLOSED https://www.facebook.com/Brisbane-Bird-and-Exotics-Veterinary-Services-162228967128663/

22.01.2022 Tuesday Tip! Coming to the vet can be a little scary for our patients, bribing them with their favourite treats can make the entire ordeal a little bit nicer! Feel free to send their favourite treats into consult with them so we can give them something yummy after their exam! We often have these sorts of treats in our consult rooms, or things like fresh veggies for our piggies, custard and other yummies for our rodent friends and dried mealworms for our poultry, but if your... creature likes something specific feel free to pack them a little 'lunchbox'. We often have little packs of nuts and millet available for sale in reception if you want to treat your little one on the way home!

22.01.2022 Everyone meet Cheeky! This beautiful conure is one of our lovely patients! She is currently on long term medication which she gets each morning. Her owners have worked very hard to make this a positive process for her, and now she is happy to take her daily medication. Her devoted family provided us with this video of her getting her medicine. What a star!

21.01.2022 Happy Wear It Purple Day! Wear it Purple Day is about showing LGBTIQA+ young people that they have the right to be proud of who they are. It is about creating safe spaces in schools, universities, workplaces and public spaces to show LGBTIQA+ young people that they are seen and supported. We at BBEVS strive to foster a supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environment for everyone! Find out more at wearitpurple.org

21.01.2022 Tuesday Tip! Anything can be repurposed into a bird stand! Here you can see Wasp and Beetle upcycling old CD racks.

21.01.2022 Everyone meet Norbert the Pygmy bearded dragon! Here he is showing us that reptiles can benefit from environmental enrichment and foraging just as much as any other creature! Making your pet's mealtimes more interesting is one way we can stimulate them mentally and keep them active. Norbert has quickly learnt how to use his rubber foraging ball, which makes him work a bit harder for his greens than if they were just provided in a bowl. Show us examples of your pets foraging below!

21.01.2022 Last week BBEVS got to see a very special visitor! Our nurse Maddie popped in with the newest member of our BBEVS family - her son Archie! Everyone was very excited to meet him and immediately smitten. Maddie and her partner Tom are both doing wonderfully! We also thought we would take this opportunity to share with you that Dr Emma is expecting her second child, and will be going on Maternity Leave in December ... If you wish to see her for a consult before she goes on leave feel free to call the clinic today =)

21.01.2022 It was Dr Deb’s birthday recently, and the lovely women (the PellieGallies) from Pelican and Seabird Rescue Inc. dropped off a present. It’s a Superbug (see the cape)! It made nerdy hearts happy. Thanks, PellieGals - and thanks for the great work that you do! #superbug #mrsa #goldenstaph #Staphylococcus

19.01.2022 We just love getting to know you and your pets over their lifetimes. Molly is one of our very special patients who we have been lucky to have known since her first appointment with us in March 2010! She is now 14.5 years old and we look forward to many more years working with her mama to continue to keep her happy and healthy. We love you Mol #birdvet #brisbanebirdandexotics #avianvet #avianveterinarian #exoticsvet

18.01.2022 Tuesday Tip! Unpacking your shopping is a great foraging opportunity for your parrot... providing that you dont want the food for yourself!

18.01.2022 EDIT: Monday Tip! Make sure you check the day before posting! :) Tuesday Tip! Try putting your water bottle on mist and spraying above your bird. Here, Licorice is really getting into a shower. You can still mist your birds at this time of year, but only on warm days and early on so that they have time to preen themselves dry.

18.01.2022 Greetings everyone! We have some exciting news for you!! Given the low case numbers of COVID-19 in Queensland in the last few weeks, we have decided that it is safe to join our split teams back together. Thank you so much for your tolerance while we were essential services only. We are super excited to have our BBEVS crew back together, and very pleased to announce that we can now accommodate general health examinations for your furred, feathered and scaled family members.... We know that some of you have been waiting so patiently, and will be rushing to the phones to book! We are likely to have a backlog so we may book up quickly - but we will do our very best to accommodate everyone in a timely fashion. We can't wait to see you all again!

18.01.2022 Everyone meet Typhoon! This gorgeous baby bearded dragon came in recently for a general health check with Dr Emma - weighing in at a tiny 7 grams! Typhoon is one lucky dragon - his owner was already doing a wonderful job of meeting all of his needs, and we only had a few minor adjustments to suggest to ensure that he will thrive! Health checks on new animals are very important to make sure that you are getting them off to a wonderful start. If you want to book your pet in for a health check today just call our team on 07 3217 3533

16.01.2022 We love getting to know pets and their people! Here is Dr Sasha catching up with one of her regular patients Chance. He is a lovely boy and is always serenading Sasha with songs as she checks his samples under the microscope

16.01.2022 Tuesday Tip! Reptiles need to be able to feel secure in their enclosure, so hides or privacy areas should be provided. These can be as simple as a cardboard box, or purpose-made, but must be easy to clean and disinfect. Care should be taken to secure the hide, so that it cannot fall on to or entrap your reptile. There should be a hide in the hot end and the cold end of the enclosure. Here is handsome Norbert hanging out in one of the hides in his hospital enclosure. What a cutie!

15.01.2022 These three superstar bantams donated blood today! Sterling, Newt, and Yeti were only too happy to help a fellow chook in need. The extra helping of delicious mealworms afterwards was also a nice bonus.

15.01.2022 Everyone meet Minnie the cockatiel! This young girl came to see us earlier this year after her owner had noticed a lump on her chest. It turns out that little Miss Minnie had been a cheeky girl and had been chewing on fibres and had a huge lump of fibre stuck in her crop (also known as a crop foreign body). These fibre foreign bodies are unfortunately quite common in birds, particularly cockatiels. Birds chew on rope toys in their cage, or materials around the house (carpet..., fibres from clothing or material that hangs on cages) and often will swallow small pieces. Cotton fibres aren’t able to be properly digested and over time build up in the gastrointestinal tract until they reach a size that prevents normal eating and normal movement of food through the body. Unfortunately Minnie had a very large foreign body and had to be in hospital for a number of days to stabilise her prior to having surgery to remove it. We are happy to report that Minnie came through her surgery with flying colours! She is now happy and well at home! The best way to prevent these things from developing is being very mindful of what our birds have access to, particularly in the toy department! We suggest no rope toys and using alternatives such as leather or wooden toys. Paper and newspaper are fine to be chewed as they are much more digestible. If you have any concerns for your pet please don’t hesitate to call the clinic and arrange a visit 07 3217 3533

14.01.2022 **I am a Kingfisher! Their larger kookaburra cousins look very similiar on x-ray too. All our kingfisher patients have radiographs performed in hospital before they are released or sent into care, to ensure they aren't hiding any fractures.** Who am I? Can anyone guess the species pictured here on X-ray ?

14.01.2022 You might remember the story of Nake the Snake ! The brave patient has since been featured in the courier mail Click our Instagram link below to read the whole story! https://www.instagram.com/p/CEio6nvAIh3/

14.01.2022 During this mandatory lockdown period we are still open to assist you and your pets, and request that you kindly follow our guidelines when visiting the clinic: * If you're here for an emergency consultation please go directly in to the reception area with your pet * If you’re here for a booked consultation, please call from your car to check-in, and wait in your car for the vet to call you * If you need to come in to reception to collect medications or food, pick up your pe...t, pay for your appointment, or deliver wildlife- please queue on the ramp, observing social distancing * Masks are mandatory until 6pm Monday - this includes in your car It is raining today so we suggest bringing an umbrella :) We greatly appreciate your co-operation during this stressful time

13.01.2022 Hello everyone! Today we bring you the staff profile of our lovely nurse Meri As a child, Meris life plan was to own a pet sanctuary where time NEVER ran out for the animals. She deviated from this plan slightly and pursued some very different career paths at university, however returned to the animal care industry when she realised that adults often spend more time at work than with their loved ones; she wanted a career she could be passionate about. She commenced her nursi...ng career in general practice with dog and cat patients, and worked in the same building as the BBEVS Team for 5 years before accepting an offer to join them. Ten years later and Meri considers herself a BBEVS Liferand is also *affectionately?* known as Meriatric. She also received an annual BBEVS award for Least likely to reach escape velocity The mental health and wellbeing of our staff are of utmost importance to Meri and she has become an accredited Mental Health First Aid Officer to ensure the team has the best possible support. She is a constant advocate for practicing self-care and mindfulness, and there are many colourful notes throughout the clinic to remind our staff and clients to be kind to themselves in a setting that can be intensely emotional and draining. Meri is responsible for overhauling and maintaining the laboratory at BBEVS. She ensures that all testing protocols are followed, and personally oversees the quality control of all in-house equipment and testing. Meri shares her life and home with an exceptionally patient and supportive partner Jamie, and their motley family of perfectly imperfect creatures accumulated over many years working in the vet industry. In her down time Meri is happiest under a tree somewhere with a cup of tea and a true crime podcast, exploring antique shops, camping somewhere secluded (preferably with platypus to watch), practicing yoga, cooking vegetarian meals, and spending time with her nearest and dearest. She is grateful every day to be part of the BBEVS family, and to spend her time with so many wonderful humans and their animal companions.

13.01.2022 Patient of the day - look at this magnificent beast! Archie was in for a health check with Dr Sasha this week and tipped the scales at almost 1.7kg!! It is unusual for an adult pig to weigh this much without being overweight. Adult male guinea pigs on a healthy diet typically weigh between 900- 1200 grams (0.9-1.2kg). Look at how relaxed this healthy big boy is for his physical examination

13.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day to all the mums of feathered-scaled-skinned-finned-furred kids. We hope youre feeling loved and getting spoiled with something nice - like a bubble bath as this darling patient is Post your Mothers Day pics below

13.01.2022 Earlier this week was a special milestone for BBEVS - we have been in our clinic building for 5 years!! We cannot believe how quickly the time has passed, and we are so thankful for all of our wonderful clients and patients that support us every day. We love helping you keep your pets healthy! Here's hoping the next 5 years are just as wonderful.

12.01.2022 We hope everyone had a lovely, relaxing Easter weekend! This week's Tuesday Tip features William Snakespeare the olive python enjoying a lovely swim in his shell pool. Many pythons (and olive pythons in particular) enjoy swimming, so providing them with a small outdoor pool is a great way to enrich their lives! Always ensure the pool is filled with clean, fresh water, and that you are constantly supervising your snake while outdoors!

12.01.2022 Good morning friends, We are having some technical issues while installing a new phone system to help serve you better. We have our wonderful tech team and our nursing staff working hard to get the issue sorted. You can still call through, but be aware that there may be delays on our end.... Thank you for your patience! (Pictured is Dr Becs beloved ratty Lemon who used to help with office work)

12.01.2022 Were so lucky here at BBEVS to have some of the very best clients in the world! One of our lovely regular clients dropped in some custom made scrub caps for our team to wear while in surgery! Disposable surgical gear is in short supply during these challenging COVID-19 times, so these caps are so appreciated.... They also feature some of the animals we get to see here at BBEVS, so our vets and nurses will look extra snazzy every time they scrub in for surgery! Thank you!

11.01.2022 Some of our friends might remember Pippa the dancing duck who stayed in hospital with us a few months ago for treatment of paralysis caused by botulism. She came back for a visit this weekend- she is thoroughly enjoying this lovely, overcast weather and we thoroughly enjoyed her beautiful purple bow and impressive dancing talent =) Happy Sunday, stay warm!

11.01.2022 **UPDATE - OUR PHONES ARE BACK UP AND RUNNING! Thank you for your patience.** The brief but heavy storm in Brisbane this afternoon has caused our phones to go offline. We are currently working to fix the problem. We apologise for the inconvenience!

10.01.2022 Happy Easter Facebook friends! We hope you are enjoying a quiet and relaxing long weekend with loved ones. Lets play guess the egg! Can anyone guess which Australian species these speckled eggs belong to ? Hint - the nest will give you a clue

10.01.2022 Our friends at Reptile Rehabilitation Queensland have sent in the following examples of social distancing! Show us below your social distancing with your furred, feathered and scaled babies! =)

08.01.2022 Happy Tuesday everyone! We hope you are all keeping safe and well during these uncertain times! With people spending more time at home due to social distancing, and some people working from home, many people are spending more time with their pets! We are sure our furry, scaled and feathered friends are pleased with any extra attention they can get! Given we all will be spending more time at home, and possibly more time with our pets, it may be a good idea to do some training ...with your pet, or work on some enrichment activities for them (we can all now appreciate how challenging it is sometimes to be kept in a confined space!). Below we have some websites about enrichment and training for some of the creatures that we see! Feel free to share pictures with us below of your animals enjoying having their humans around =) A good link for bird training: http://www.goodbirdinc.com/ Some links for bird foraging and enrichment for parrots http://foragingforparrots.com/ https://avianenrichment.com/downloads Some links for reptile enrichment: http://www.reptilesmagazine.com/The-Vet-Report-Environment/ https://www.facebook.com/Reptelligence/ Some links for small mammal enrichment: https://www.afrma.org/enviroenrich.htm https://www.petmd.com//how-provide-environmental-enrichmen https://kb.rspca.org.au//what-exercise-and-environmental-/ http://www.guineapigtricks.com/guinea-pig-enrichment-ideas.

08.01.2022 Happy weekend from this darling duo - Amos and Andy!! We have known these two cheeky boys, their dedicated owner and other members of their feathered flock since 2011! They are now 10.5 years old and were in for their routine health check with Dr Bec this week. Aren't they a treat!?

07.01.2022 Have you met our newest staff member? This little lady is a Resin Mason Wasp and she has been tirelessly working to provide for her children right outside our clinic doors! As the name implies, resin mason wasps use plant resin to construct their nests this gives their nests that beautiful shiny, honey-coloured appearance. They are solitary wasps which mean their nests are on the smaller side compared to other wasp species. This is because they only need to create a habitat... for their offspring, and not for an entire colony. Resin mason wasps can be a very unusual sight to see, so having this lovely mama wasp outside our clinic is very exciting! While there are many species of bees that use resin to create their nests, there are only two known species of wasps in the whole of Australia with this trait! Mason wasps are capable of stinging, but they are very mild-tempered and will only do so if roughly handled or extremely provoked. This means you and your pets are completely safe while waiting on our deck area. Here at BBEVS we love supporting our native wildlife, and this includes the insects that help keep our local ecology going. Did you know that wasps are very important pollinators? Adult resin mason wasps mostly eat flower nectar, which means in the process of doing so they help pollinate dozens of plants each day! Baby resin mason wasps eat caterpillars. Each one of these resin nests are filled with a caterpillar and a wasp egg. Once the baby hatches it will have a caterpillar meal ready to eat thanks to the tireless hunting efforts of its mum. This means that wasps are also excellent pest control buddies they will naturally reduce the caterpillar burden in your veggie garden! We’re very lucky to share our premises with such an interesting little creature!

07.01.2022 We're so lucky here at BBEVS to have some of the very best clients in the world! Thank you!

07.01.2022 Are you a bird-napper and don't even know it? This Spring, before you whisk away a baby bird from it's flight lessons, take a moment to assess the situation.... Ask yourself these questions: Does the bird have feathers? Is the bird calling or making a noise? Is the bird bright and responsive? Can the bird perch on your finger? Can the bird spread its wings evenly and flutter to the ground when encouraged to fly? If the answer to these questions is a definite 'yes', then the baby bird is learning to fly, check for watchful parents nearby before leaving it to learn its life-skills. If the answer is no or you're not sure, then it's time to reunite the bird with it's parents and/or seek local veterinary treatment depending on the situation. Remember, if you find an injured or sick animal, or baby bird and are not sure what to do, call the RSPCA QLD 24/7 Animal Emergency Hotline 1300 ANIMAL for real time advice. For more details and to download our baby bird rescue guide, visit our blog: https://bit.ly/3kiZpY6

07.01.2022 Congratulations to our academic powerhouse nurse, Alana, who has just received her Veterinary Nursing Diploma of Zoological Species! This qualification is only offered in the UK, and required two years and over 200 hours of advanced study to complete. Of course, she aced it. We are so proud! Alana also coordinates the Continuing Education Program for all of our staff, as lifelong learning and ongoing improvement are amongst our core values at BBEVS.
