23.01.2022 Attention all skippers who may be interested in participating in their first ever Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race (B2G) to be held on 2 April 2021. The Surf to City Yacht Race on 16 January 2021 is the perfect qualifying event for the B2G. Those who have a Cruising Yacht and wish to be part of the action heading to Gladstone in 2021 are most welcome to compete. But it is essential for all entrants to pre-qualify by completing a suitable distance ocean race in the 12 months beforehand. 22.01.2022 In 1955 President Don Parker approached the Hornibrook Toll Bridge, who were collecting tolls from the hundreds of spectators coming down to watch the start from Woody Point Jetty and asked them to dig into their pockets and supply a trophy - which they refused. So in true ‘Don style’, he said stuff ya and moved the race to Shorncliffe! It was a condition of entry that all yachts had to moor off the Western side of the Jetty on the morning of the start. This got the publi...c up close to the entrants. It also introduced Pier Jumping where some skippers selected new crew on the day, booting-off those who did not fit in! On one occasion an official from Sandgate Yacht Club - Sid Robinson was being introduced to the Governor. As he turned to face him, his foot accidentally caught the Shot Gun resting on the jetty and knocked it into the drink!

19.01.2022 Here are some mementos of our function on Saturday, to dedicate our BCC clubhouse facility refurbishment and move a vote of thanks to the Brisbane City Council. We also paid tribute to our Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race sponsors, including official airline carrier Qantas as well as B2G volunteers. Guests included Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, Qantas Regional Manager Elsa D'Alessio, our B2G 2020 Race Director Karen Somerville, and dedicated Sailing committee members, club members and supporters. A big thank you to all who made the day such a memorable occasion.

17.01.2022 Recently, Qantas regretfully resolved to not renew sponsorship involvement from a long list of high profile sporting teams and events, one of which includes The Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race. The QCYC acknowledges this decision would not have been made lightly, especially considering Qantas and QantasLink's long and valued partnership with our much treasured and historic Queensland offshore race. The club wishes to extend its gratitude to Qantas and their team members, w...ho have become forever friends of the B2G, for their valued and integral support over the many, many years. After the first-ever cancellation in the races in 72 years, the QCYC is still proudly determined to proceed with the B2G - 2021, but must now reach out to a philanthropic Queensland or Australian business to pick up the baton as Naming Rights Sponsor to ensure the viability and continuance of Queensland's iconic Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race. 16.01.2022 In 1978 QCYC member Jack Verdon was having a quiet drink with his mate Frank Burtt at an Anzac day function. Frank happened to be a navigator in the RAAF, holding the rank of Squadron Leader and along with the Base Commander of the day, saw an opportunity to train RAAF personnel with communications in field conditions working in with the Brisbane to Gladstone Race. In 1979 RAAF Amberley provided communications for the Brisbane to Gladstone fleet with bases set up on Bribie Is...land, Double Island Point and Gladstone. Those locations worked out to be not very successful for communicating with the yachts at sea, so 1980 saw the bases moved to Noosa, Indian Head on Fraser Island and on this occasion local Gladstone yachting royalty, Brad & Maryke Barker’s garage on the hill overlooking Gladstone Harbour. So - how do you move all this equipment around? With a bloody big helicopter! (as the photo shows on Fraser Island).

05.01.2022 PUBLIC STATEMENT CONCERNING THE 2020 BRISBANE TO GLADSTONE YACHT RACE AND CURRENT COVID19 CONSIDERATIONS Queensland Cruising Yacht Club Inc. (QCYC) as the organising authority for the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race is releasing the following statement with respect to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Accordingly, QCYC advises that preparations for the 2020 race are well underway. At present, there is no indication, nor governmental advisory that the event should either be cancelled o...r postponed. QCYC though is continually monitoring official governmental sources of information including the advisory of the Commonwealth and those through Queensland Health. It will take any proactive steps as it may be required to do, as a responsible organising authority, in the overall interests of public health and safety, should relevant advisories change. In terms of actions to prevent any health risks to the public caused by the COVID19 Pandemic, QCYC is also in close contact with the various stakeholder groups, particularly those which will have responsibilities managing events where crowd gatherings may occur. QCYC is also reviewing and updating all necessary procedures of its own, to meet public safety standards. QCYC will disseminate any specific information to competitors, sponsors and the general public as necessary, as and when information comes to hand, in line with any changes to the situation, and in consultation with its sponsors and event partners. Finally, because of the unique nature of a Yacht Race start and its conduct, the public can safely view the event from home (scheduled to commence 10am (EST) on 10 April 2020) via the free public live streaming (proudly supported by Gladstone Regional Council) which will be available through the Race website: www.brisbanetogladstone.com and on Facebook. 05.01.2022 For the 50th Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club approached the Royal Australian Navy to supply a naval vessel to fire the start. The navy said that this was not possible because they did not operate over Easter! Glen Somerville and Jim Box thought that we might be able to convince the Army to put a gun on a barge. So Jim Box approached the 105th Battery of 1st Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery who were very enthusiastic and Glen Somerville ...approached the Port of Brisbane Authority who were also happy to supply a barge. With a great deal of coordination a 105mm Hamel gun was loaded onto the barge at the Port of Brisbane and motored it to the start line. The gun and barge were located 300 meters directly in front of the start line with the gun pointing at the middle of the fleet. As the yachts circled the gun before the start, there was much excitement and some trepidation with the sailors. Needless to say, the noise was loud, very loud, and was precisely on time. After the race, the 105mm shell was cut in half and mounted on a board together with all of the names of the gun crew on a plaque. This board is on a wall at the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club.

Over the past few years, the historical Good Friday start of the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race (B2G) has been live-streamed to the world via the B2G Facebook Page and also through the Brisbane to Gladstone official website, however, after a landmark agreement this week, the first two hours of the race will now also be live-streamed to subscribers across 17 of News Corp’s sites in Queensl...and and New South Wales, including the respective state newspapers, Courier Mail in Brisbane and Sydney’s Daily Telegraph. On the back of last year’s successful live streaming made possible by race major sponsors, Qantas and the Gladstone Regional Council, News Corp’s Bryce Johns, Executive Editor (Digital) announced that for the first time, News’ stable of regional titles will also run the stream, titles stretching from Grafton in NSW to Cairns in Far North Queensland. The Courier-Mail is a long-standing proud sponsor of this event and we’re delighted to make the start available to our more than 150,000 members in this patch,’’ Bryce Johns, Executive Editor (Digital), said. In a surprising announcement on top, Mr Johns added that yachting-mad Sydneysiders will also be offered the Livestream through the incredibly popular Daily Telegraph, doubling the potential audience over 300,000 members.
