24.01.2022 Historical 10ft Skiffs Sunday 8 November - Race 3 Commentary, courtesy of John Chiplin CONDITIONS Flood Tide with winds oscillating between 90 and 120 degrees. and strength from 5 to 15 knots Course 3 Sailed. Time for first skiff to sail course - 1 hour 18 minutes... Well we had five skiffs on the course yesterday being -Truant 11, Avro, Uncle Fred, Truant 111 & Merle Truant 111 being sailed by the Kings and Felicity, their first sail in a 10. The start line was well and truly biased to the pin for the conditions, and I must say there was a lot of yelling and aggression in the last 10 seconds of the countdown. The first beat was to the Barton Rd Hawthorne mark, and Avro just pipped Truant 11 on the rounding, with Uncle Fred not far behind, thence Truant 111, and Merle, who was having problems with their jib. Within a few minutes of rounding we had two capsizes, firstly Truant 11, which became a bit unstable when setting their spinnaker, thence Truant 111 who swam whilst trying to avoid the capsized Truant 11. ( hope this makes sense ) both skiffs were towed back to the BSS ramp, then Hugh hurriedly took off down the Hamilton Reach, to check on the remaining three skiffs, at first glance all were upright and sailing well, but he spoke to soon, as Merle took a swim whilst negotiating the Apollo Road Mark, a combination of water in the bilge, and the last of the flood tide was their undoing. Avro and Uncle Fred were sailing well in the mixed conditions, as we were busy most of the race I do not know if either or both skiffs set spinnakers. The end result was Avro first and Uncle Fred second, four minutes behind. both skiffs sailed well in the trying conditions. I would also like to thank David Sim, for his assistance on the Grant West.
24.01.2022 Kiwis take the title, again! JJs Races 8 & 9 NE 10-12 knots Following the decision by the League to end racing on Thursday 19th, the last two races of the championship were held in a lovely big rig noreaster on an again, empty harbour bar 4 massive cruise ships and around 20 spectator craft... For the Queensland crews, mastering the fine details of sailing in Sydney continued to be a challenge where often a single boat length can separate a winning tack and a losing tack This was demonstrated when Lumix had a good top 10 start in race 9 only to hit the back of the fleet on their very first tack simply by being 2 lengths West of the sweet spot at Bradleys Head As one of the Qld 12s sailors said to me over the weekend "I know you love sailing on Sydney Harbour but for us visitors, we hate it [because of its technical nuances]" Some morning tuning on QMC with their big rig saw them close the gap on the fleet. For our teams on Queenslander, Lumix and QMC its been a good regatta to gain experience, spend some time sailing on Sydney Harbour and gauge the work thats required over the next 12 months before the whole show kicks off again We saw conditions ranging from 30 knots down to 6 and some classic technical courses as well as straight out drag races where teams hot over 25 knots boat speed. Final results: Queenslander 20th Lumix 23rd QMC 24th And we certainly showed enough potential to get into the top 15 and top 10 for 2021 Thank you to the Brisbane 18s for the support provided to our teams, to the teams themselves for a great effort and a very positive campaign, to the League for hosting a great event and to all the other 18s teams from NSW and NZ for a challenging regatta Congratulations to Honda on their win, Winning Group 2nd and Smeg in 3rd See you next year! 19.01.2022 Breeze on Sunday.
17.01.2022 A decision has been reached in line with those of many other clubs that racing for the remainder of the season will not occur. In particular our Historical 10ft Skiff supporters and a number of crews are in at risk groups, so the decision was not difficult to arrive at. Unfortunately the planned Queensland 18ft Skiff Championship and Australian Historical 10ft Skiff Championships have also been cancelled. The Historical 10s Race Committee will confer in regards to whether eno...ugh racing has been completed to constitute the award of our major series trophies, and likewise for the 12ft skiff fraternity. At this stage the Club will continue planning towards celebration of our centenary regatta in early October, however this will of course be subject to the ever evolving situation. Well be keeping in touch with the plan to publish some detailed history of the Club in a series of posts leading up to our centenary. Were also looking to launch a fresh looking website (https://brisbane18footers.com) in the coming months. Stay safe out there and look after each other.
16.01.2022 Final 2019-20 Season Results for the Historical 10s have been released and are as follows.... Most Fastest Times.... Truant II... Handicap Aggregate.... Jessie Truant II Uncle Fred Jack Reid Memorial.... Jessie Truant II Uncle Fred Club Championship ( Scratch ) Truant II Jessie Uncle Fred Club Championship ( Handicap ) Truant II Jessie Uncle Fred Qld Championship ( Scratch ) Truant II Merle Avro Qld Championship ( Handicap ) Merle Truant II Avro Unfortunately a number or races werent sailed this season, due to weather conditions, and also our sailing was terminated from March 20th, due to the threat of the Corona Virus. Congratulations to John, Bruce, and Jim, on Truant II, they displayed good speed over all the races sailed, it is a pity the Australian Titles will not be held on the River in May, suspect they would have given a good account of themselves. Next season is looking positive (not for COVID-19)! * Hugh has just completed a heap of work on Uncle Fred, and it is now looking great. * Paul on Merle has his crew sorted, and is hoping for a good season. * Peter, Ian and Mark on Avro will be hoping to emulate their 2018/2019 Season * Stay tuned in regards to Jessie and Marina.
15.01.2022 Been trawling the State Library of Queensland photos for some historical photos in preparation for the Centenary and found this one.
15.01.2022 Great start on Lumix in race 5 and excellent example of how hard the start line was to pick in challenging conditions, Pin end on a hard left hander, Committee end in a nice right hander
14.01.2022 Good luck Quentin, stick it to the Kiwis!

10.01.2022 Thank you to Nic Douglass Adventures of a Sailor Girl for some great pics of the QLD crews in yesterdays races More to come from todays final races #adventuresofasailorgirl #18ftskiff #18footers
08.01.2022 Today's Historical 10ft Skiff race has been abandoned due to the forecast high chance of storm activity. The points for the first race of the Jack Reid series will be allocated from a race later this season.
08.01.2022 It is with sadness that the Club advises that Chris Goodhew passed away peacefully yesterday. Chris was a Past Commodore of the Club and Immediate Past Statutory Officer of Brisbane 18 Footers Sailing Club Pty Ltd (the Trust). While never a sailor, he was a close supporter of the sailing through campaigning Classic 18ft Skiff teams and Historical 10ft Skiff Teams, as well as being a regular rescue boat driver. The Clubs thoughts are with Sue, Sarah and Jemima, and the extended family in these times. Due to COVID-19 restrictions it is obvious that attendance at the funeral by members would not be appropriate, and a memorial service will be likely at an appropriate time in the future.

03.01.2022 Sprint until you break JJs Races 3, 4 & 5 5-12 knots SE... An exhausting day on the water for crews with 3 hectic sprint races in a tricky soueaster on Rose Bay Today was all about the start, finding pressure, being in phase and staying clear. Our lads on the three QLD boats did an excellent job in what was a challenging series of sprints with 24 starters on the line Several general and individual recalls across all three races with a number of the top boats having a bad day at the office Race 3 two laps; Off the line Team Hayter (Queenslander) and Team Watson (Lumix) were in the lead bunch, fighting hard for clean air. Welcome to the front row Team Watson! Unfortunately for Team Hayter they were called over early and returned to the line to restart Holding position well up the first work despite some clearly older rags, team Watson rounded in the top half of the Peloton with the top mark a hot bed of tense emotions with lots of helpful advice on boat handling being shared between crews R3 Lumix 20th, Queenslander 23rd & Team Rogers (QMC) 24th Race 4 three laps: again Watson and Hayter were in the lead pack on the line and again put on a great effort to get up the first work in the main pack, well ahead of some fancied rivals. The lads on Queenslander held on to score their best result of the day finishing in 16th, Watson after an unscripted capsize downwind dropped from a solid top 12 to take out another 20th and QMC 21st after three boats were called OCS, speculation rife that Team Watson was inches away from joining them on the OCS list Race 5 two laps: Crews again lined up on a heated line for the start and again Watson and Hayter were on the money with great starts, Watson well in among the top three boats to get away from the starters gun. Two fast laps in the best breeze of the day and some great work on Lumix saw them pick up a well deserved 17th, Queenslander in 22nd and QMC 24th Observations for the day: - Sprint races are hard work on minds and bodies - Starting well is critical - Sydney soueasters are difficult - The new boats that have arrived in Brisbane have offered a big boost to our fleet, working gear is dated so needs to be a focus for the sailing group into next season as crews struggled to hold position after great starts against the Sydney fleet - QMC struggled for speed all day, while the working gear looks a little better than that on Lumix, work needs to be done to tune the boat up to help the team be competitive Virus update: The League is monitoring the current Govt advice and following the PMs announcement today they will provide crews with an update later today. Its possible, now that enough races have been staged to call it a regatta, that we may see the series end early. Update to follow when announcements are made Conditions for Race 7 - 15 knot north easter, sunny conditions and looks like a classic NE course today, similar to the Invitation Race
03.01.2022 Our new website is LIVE! Same URL, https://brisbane18footers.com The site is now properly mobile device friendly, with a few new sections such as team pages for all of our classes.... Weve already got a couple of posts about our #centenary history there so go check them out.
01.01.2022 The final day of racing in the JJs saw the little yellow duck get amongst it as we were privileged to be able to host good friend of Brisbane 18s, Nic Douglass (Adventures of a Sailor Girl) for the day. Following the main contenders and scoring an impromptu interview with the winning team on Honda after they won race 7, securing the regatta with 1 race to spare. Small snippet attached and full live video of the days racing available on the Adventures of a Sailor Girl Facebook page
01.01.2022 A big well done to Quentin Palmer for making the top 6 and now representing Australia against the Kiwis in next weekends Trans Tasman eSailing Challenge.
