16.01.2022 Precautions regarding COVID-19 and how we can help. We are open for Business! With the ever changing advice present in the media and the gradual increase in cas...es in Queensland we wanted to reassure our clients that we are doing everything we can to maintain our usual high levels of service whilst minimising risk to our staff and our clients. At McDowall Veterinary Practice we routinely have optimal levels of hygiene and infection control and so believe that we are well placed to continue to provide a location with the highest levels of sterility. As a standard our whole clinic is cleaned and disinfected twice daily with medical strength disinfectants. We shall be increasing the frequency of these deep cleans, especially to areas of the building that are high throughput and high touch. As common sense would dictate, if you are unwell or showing flu like symptoms, please advise us in advance of your arrival and we will make plans to see you in a quarantined area and take the appropriate precautions. To assist our clients who may have been advised by their physicians to avoid public areas or need to stay at home we have the following services available: We can accommodate drop off appointments for all of your veterinary needs including surgery, dental cleanings, examinations, vaccinations, diagnostic testing, illness visits, etc. We can come to your car to get your pet and bring them back out for their scheduled pick-up time. As our clients will know, we run efficiently to an appointment system and take pride in keeping waiting times to a minimum. However, if you would prefer to wait in your car on arrival prior to your appointment, please just give us a ring on 3353 6999 when you arrive in the car park and we will escort you straight into the consult room when ready. Email/video/picture consultations and associated prescription medications may be available for established clients if we have seen your pet for a physical exam WITHIN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. We can accommodate certain types of assessments, particularly ongoing conditions, but cannot guarantee this avenue for all patients. An in-person physical exam yields much more information to our doctors and team members. Email us at [email protected] if you have NON-URGENT questions, pictures, videos, or would like to request a phone consultation with a vet. Please allow 24 hours for a reply. A consultation fee will be applied. If you are unable to visit the clinic, but are healthy, we can arrange for a housecall. If you are in a period of self-isolation and your pet requires treatment then please phone us. There are a couple of options for this; a friend or family member could bring them to the practice or we could come and collect them at your door, take them back to the practice to be assessed and then return them to you. We realise that these are unusual times. Thank you to our "family" of patients and clients for your ongoing support. We want you to know that we are here for you and will do everything we can to uphold the exceptional veterinary care our pet parents and patients deserve. Call us on 3353 6999 if there is anything we can do to keep your family and pets healthy during this challenging time. Photo credit: Alice Madsen

14.01.2022 On tomorrow! Pet friendly day out

14.01.2022 Dog Poisoned by the Diffuser Saturday night I got home late and my dog didn't recognize me. Being a nanny I thought I woke him up and he was having a night terr...or. Sunday, he was still acting weird. I realized that I had been running my new diffuser and decided to turn it off. Sunday afternoon, he was feeling better. Today at work, my dog sitter said that he wouldn't come out from under the bed. It was very odd as he is a happy dog. I came from work early and again, he was very confused about who I was. So I took him to emergency vet. It turns out that the tea tree oil I was using in the diffuser is toxic for dogs. Thankfully the test showed that his liver was ok but we weren't out of the woods yet. He was given fluids under his skin to get the toxins out. The vet and the poison control are saying that they see these cases often now that the popularity of essential oil is growing. Please make sure that the essential oils you are burning are not toxic for your pets. Here is a list of essential oils not to use if you have a dog at home Anise (Pimpinella anisum) Birch (Betula) Bitter Almond (Prunus dulcis) Boldo (Peumus boldus) Calamus (Acorus calamus) Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) Cassia (Cassia fistula) Chenopodium (Chenopodium album) Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) Garlic (Allium sativum) Goosefoot (Chenopodium murale) Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) Hyssop (Hyssopus sp. with the exception of Decumbens) Juniper (Juniperus sp. with the exception of Juniper Berry) Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) Mustard (Brassica juncea) Oregano (Origanum vulgare) Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) Red or White Thyme Rue (Ruta graveolens) Santolina (Santolina chamaecyparissus) Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) Savory (Satureja) Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) Terebinth (Pistacia palaestina) Thuja (Thuja occidentalis) Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) Please share this story as it may save someones precious furry family member!
