23.01.2022 BGS is seeking nominations from the community for the 2020 Betty Howell Awards, recognising those who have gone above and beyond expectations for students, parents and friends of BGS. The award is named in honour of Mrs Joan Elizabeth (Betty) Howell, wife of former headmaster Maxwell A Howell. During her 25-year association with the School, Betty was a passionate volunteer with the Art Committee and P&F Auxiliary. 23.01.2022 BGS Old Boy Gregor Stewart 18 has been elected by his peers as the President of the Queen's College Student Club for 2021. Founded in 1887, Queens is a residential college affiliated with the University of Melbourne. It has been home to many BGS Old Boys over the years. Gregor will head a 250-member student club, overseeing student sub-committees and budgets to plan and deliver social, cultural, sporting and academic activities.

22.01.2022 FROM THE BGS ARCHIVES: Engineer and timber merchant Romeo Lahey (1903 pictured right), was a committed conservationist whose efforts contributed to the formation of Lamington National Park in 1915 and the National Parks Association in 1930. He was appointed MBE in 1960. In 1967 a plaque was unveiled by Premier Nicklin on land Lahey gave for incorporation in Lamington National Park, one of several gifts to the national estate. The prominent Australian artist, Vida Lahey MBE (pictured) was his sister.

22.01.2022 FROM THE BGS ARCHIVES: Arthur Benjamin (1908), described in his school report as having great natural musical ability, became an internationally-renowned pianist, composer, conductor and teacher. In 1918, when serving as a gunner with the Royal Flying Corps, Benjamin was shot down by the young Hermann Goring, made a prisoner-of-war and later awarded the Military Cross. Though probably best known for Jamaican Rumba, he also wrote four operas, a symphony, many concertos and orchestral works, instrumental and chamber music as well as Hollywood film scores.

19.01.2022 Fourth BGS generation marks Anzac Day at home: Continuing a BGS tradition, Old Boy Rohan von Hoyer-Davies 88, Year 10 student Connor and sister Lauren commemorated Anzac Day at home, streaming the ABC broadcast from the National War Memorial on Saturday morning. Rohan is a serving reservist in the Royal Australian Armys Medical Corp. Connor wears the service medals of his great grandfather Robert Sydney Davies 35. Grandpa Bob (pictured) served in the Royal Engineers performing bomb disposal in Darwin during WWII, and his name is listed on the Honour Board in the Great Hall. Lauren, a Year 7 student at BGGS, wears the medals of Rohans maternal grandfather Thomas Ferry. Connor and Laurens grandfather Jon 62, uncles Cameron 87 and Justin 93 are also Old Boys.
16.01.2022 FROM THE ARCHIVES: BGS Old Boy James Mayne (1878) was well-known for his philanthropy, paying for the first X-ray plant at Brisbane General Hospital and becoming a principal benefactor to The University of Queensland along with his sister. They are commemorated by The Mayne Academy of Surgery, The Mayne Academy of Medicine, the Mayne String Trio and Mayne Hall (now James and Mary Emelia Mayne Centre). Read: https://loom.ly/nLZvVu4

15.01.2022 BGS Old Boy Peter Psaltis will call tonights blockbuster NRL game between the Brisbane Broncos and Parramatta Eels on Channel Nine. The NRL will become the first major sport in Australia to return to the field amid the COVID-19 crisis. The telecast will be shown around the world. Well done Peter.
15.01.2022 David Lush concludes his time as BGS Director of Swim Coaching today. Lushy has been part of the BGS community for almost 12 years, establishing and taking the BGS Swimming Club to one of Australias top ranked swimming clubs. The BGS Swimming GPS program has finished first or second for the past six years, with two GPS Championships in 2017 and 2018.
15.01.2022 Powderfinger musos and BGS Old Boys Ian Haug and John JC Collins (both 87) are getting the band back together for a virtual reunion concert on Saturday 23 May. The One Night Lonely gig will benefit Beyond Blue and Support Act, a charity for musicians and artists out of work due to COVID-19. Powderfingers five members will each play from their own studios, with Collins in his Fortitude Music Hall, and Haug from his Brisbane home. 14.01.2022 At school, BGS Old Boy Dylan Poulus 12 played in the cricket First XI. Now studying for his Psychology PhD at QUT, hes researching the elite level in a totally different field Esports the fastest-growing sport in the world. 13.01.2022 FROM THE BGS ARCHIVES: Sir Charles Spry (1927), graduate of Duntroons Royal Military College, was described as fearless for his evacuation efforts of soldiers, nurses and the wounded from Greece in 1941. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his war service in Papua against the Japanese in 1942. Brigadier Spry played a major role in military intelligence during the Cold War, focusing on communist subversion. He became the second Director-General of ASIO in 1950, appointed CBE in 1956 and knighted in 1964.

Daejarn Asi has been selected to make his first grade debut, joining Tom Gilbert and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow. Kick-off is at 4.05pm. The three BGS boarders played in the same side for the light dark blue in 2017.

10.01.2022 One of the School's greatest ever sportsmen, BGS Old Boy Otto Nothling, is celebrated in this 7NEWS story. Nothling is one of only two Australian men to become a dual cricket and rugby international. He went on to become a medical doctor and served in WWII as a major in the Australian Army Medical Corps. 08.01.2022 INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS: Congratulations to Old Boy Tom Bizzell ’19 who has been selected as a Schmidt Futures Reimagine Challenge winner. Tom proposed a global movement to tackle mental health issues associated with social isolation. His submission was the only winner from an Australian university, alongside recipients from Harvard, Yale and MIT. Tom recently teamed with fellow UQ student and BGS Old Boy Jack Anderson to win the global 2020 Ericsson Innovation Awards with their proposal to uses software tools to increase fuel efficiency in the freight shipping industry.
07.01.2022 Governor General of Australia, His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley, has become the Chief Patron of Hello Sunday Morning the online community started by BGS Old Boy Chris Raine 03 to address alcohol abuse. Watch the video below. Chris started Hello Sunday Morning in 2010 to provide support for people who want to change their relationship with alcohol. HSM now has 100,000 members worldwide. The Governor General says he didnt hesitate to become Chief Patron: Once youve seen alcoholism at work and how it can disorient lives, change personalities and upset ambitions, you can understand why this work is important.
07.01.2022 THE CHEETAH: Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow will become the second BGS Old Boy to debut in the NRL for the North Queensland Cowboys in a week. He joins Tom Gilbert in the Cowboys team to play the Warriors tonight. Hamiso will play on the wing and hes tipped to become the fastest man in the competition.

01.01.2022 BGS Old Boy Fraser McReight 16 will make his starting debut for the Queensland Reds in tonights Super Rugby AU match against the NSW Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium. He has played off the bench for the Reds three times and led the Junior Wallabies to runner-up in the Under 20 World Cup in Argentina last year. Good luck.
