20.01.2022 The Sydney to Brisbane Reliability Trial - as the name suggests, a test of the reliability of motor cars - was brought to a successful end on 21 October 1920. 32 cars left Sydney on Monday 18 October and arrived in Albert Square on Friday. After the trial, the visiting motorists were entertained in and around Brisbane, including this trip to Cleveland’s Pier Hotel on Sunday 24 October. 18.01.2022 The railway line from Brisbane to Dayboro was officially opened on 25 September 1920. The line had taken six years of planning and building. Over 400 passengers booked for the first trip from Brisbane, and a second train had to be run to pick up additional passengers along the way. The opening was celebrated at Dayboro with a lunch for 500 people. 10.01.2022 The perfect spot on a warm day! Swimmers and promenaders gather at the Wynnum Jetty No 2, one of the coolest spots in town in the early 20th century. Baths were built at the end of the jetty in the early 1900s, before the Wynnum Wading Pool was built in 1932 under the Unemployment Relief System, adding to Wynnum’s appeal. 10.01.2022 Some people may remember Cribb Island, the suburb which was swallowed up by the development of the Brisbane airport in the early 1980s. Back in 1920, the island (not fully separated from the mainland) was a small suburb with around 250 people, and provided a pleasant day trip for Brisbane residents. 02.01.2022 The Queensland Government Savings Bank building - Brisbane’s first high-rise government office - was under construction when the bank's functions were transferred to the Commonwealth Bank, on 8 December 1920. The building’s original name is visible in this photograph. The building was repurposed for the Queensland Government Insurance Office and finally completed in 1922.
