21.01.2022 BLB turns 70 today! On 28 January and 18 March, 1950 in Brisbane, Australia, a group of Latvians came together and decided to convene a meeting of the Brisbane Latvian Society (BLB) on 1 April 1950. This foundation meeting was attended by 56 compatriots and was held in the Bethlehem Parish meeting room at the Brisbane Lutheran Church. The first chairman (president) of the board was Edgars Kalums (1950-1951) and the members of the board were B. Klaikalietis, V. Grnbergs, V. B...uks and O. Rubis. Chairmen (president) of the board over the years were Adolfs Garancia (1951-1952), Jacob Kariks (1952-1953), and Jnis Kkums (1953-1989). Jnis served as the chairman for the longest time, receiving awards from the Queensland Government and the LAAJ for his work in the community. The subsequent BLB chairmen (presidents) were Arnis Siksna (1989-1996), Sandra Klavina (1996-1997), Irne Kkuma (1997 - 2008), and most recently dolfs Lcis (2009 current). 70 years of history. 70 years of memories. 70 years of togetherness. 70 years of love for all things Latvian. Daudz laimes BLB! Happy birthday, BLB! Photo from archives.

14.01.2022 Celebrating 70 years of Brisbane Latvian Community - the Brisbane Latvian choir Beverna This post honours the members of the community who in the last 70 years shared their passion, dedication and ongoing enthusiasm for Latvian choir music and community spirit. The Brisbane Latvian Choir was founded in January 1950, conducted by E. Kalums. After a number of performances the choir activity was put on hold as Mr Kalums left Brisbane. Subsequently, a male choir was formed and... riks Ozoli assumed the role of the conductor and composer. In 1953 there was a renowned enthusiasm to re-form the mixed choir and as a result rehearsals resumed. The choir actively performed and travelled to Latvian Culture festivals interstate, as well as regularly delighted audiences in the Brisbane Latvian community events and concerts. The choir became known under the name Beverna. Here we have to mention Maija Kavia, who was the much loved and respected choir accompanist for many years. The choir continues to evolve and currently functions as the Brisbane Baltic Choir under the direction of Juris Meija and Ruth Gabriel.

09.01.2022 The Brisbane Latvian Community remembers one of the darkest days in Latvias history. On 14 June 1941 about 15,500 Latvian residents - among them 2400 children younger than tenwere arrested without a court order to be deported to distant regions in the Soviet Union. Targeted were farming families; former members of the National Guard; scouts and guides; and families who had members in leading positions in state and local governments, economy and culture. The victims were... allowed to take with them only what they could carry, and everything left behind was confiscated by the state. They were gathered in more than 50 assembly points and carted away in more than 600 railway carriages. Approximately 5,000 were women, more than 3,000, children. Families were torn apart as the men were deported separately to labour camps deep in the GULAG. Women and children were taken to so-called "administrative settlements" as family members of "enemies of the people and anti-Soviet elements. Thousands of people perished and only a small percentage survived the inhumane conditions and mistreatment. No word of these events was mentioned in Latvias Soviet-censored newspapers. Loved ones had no way of knowing what had become of those deported. None of the institutions provided information or help. Scattered along the railroad tracks were farewell notes written by the deported to their familiesfew of them to ever reach their intended recipients. 95,000 people from the western territories of the Soviet Union and occupied areas were deported in June that year.
