21.01.2022 A nice photo showing pollen being carried on the 'pollen baskets' on the hind legs of this worker stingless bee.
20.01.2022 We often get asked on the book we refer to in some of our posts and videos. The book we recommend as essential reading and a part of learning about Native bees is "The Australian Native Bee Book", by Tim Heard. I have never come across someone being disappointed with the book and detail and pictures are amazing. It can be purchased direct from here: https://shop.sugarbag.net/products/the-native-bee-book
20.01.2022 Another difficult but rewarding rescue of Native bees today, they were in a large tree that fell over a year ago. The timber had seasoned so landowner cut into sections finding active Native bees. The Native bee nest had been sectioned out and cut through when the tree was cut up for firewood. Now to sort out the pieces tomorrow to ensure they have best chances of rebuilding and repair. Each section is over 100KG and required careful movement to vehicle.

16.01.2022 Recent Native bee Rescue and removal in Brisbane. The native bees where in a main water meter valve tube. These are difficult to remove in this situation although success was made with large brood cell removed, majority of bees captured and Queen bee recovered and placed in a new hive to ensure ongoing health. The main Brood cell and queen were 30cm deep down from surface.

15.01.2022 Native Stingless Bee Rescue from Brick retaining wall in Brisbane today. Our customer Libby and her builder were kind enough to stop demolition work to allow the Native bees to be saved. A large Brood was removed safely and many bees vacuumed to help survival of transfer. There was plenty of Honey so Libby had her first taste and was able to collect some.

10.01.2022 Removal and relocation of Native bees in water meter box in Brisbane. The Brood cell was deep down in water meter. The Honey pots were carefully removed so as not to contaminate the brood cell eggs which laid below. Following removal work could be completed by the Plumber as access was now safely available to the water meter mains tap. This will be a successful rescue as the brood eggs were removed perfectly and the Queen bee nicely found running across her eggs in the new hive.

05.01.2022 An example from a customers house in Brisbane where a Eduction method is being used for Native bee hive duplication. This method is used to hopefully obtain a second nest from the main mother nest. In this case the mother nest is in an established log. The most widely used and quickest method used by native bee keepers to duplicate a hive is to split the hive in two from a hive box. In cases where a log hive exists the hive should be left as is in the log and an Eduction made.... Eduction of Native bees can also be made from established hives in hive boxes or from a natural nest site such as a tree or cavity wall. With Eduction the main mother nest remains. The process of Eduction can take many months and requires careful monitoring. The duplicate hive is removed from the mother hive when a new queen and Brood is seen in the attached box. Eduction method for Native bees is also known as Natural Hive Duplication.
