25.01.2022 Switching to a vegan or vegetarian diet- what do you need to watch to ensure you stay healthy?

23.01.2022 While we need to be mindful of others needs and avoid the frenzy at the supermarkets, there are some healthy alternatives that we can keep in our pantry. The beans and lentils are a great way to get protein when the meat section of the supermarkets is bare! Now may be a good time to learn & practice some new plant based meals!

23.01.2022 Interesting article on the latest plastic "collectables" offered when we shop at Coles. Couldn't agree more about the hypocrisy of giving away yet more little plastic toys, while pushing their environmental and sustainability credentials. As for the comments about "Stikeez as a fun tool to encourage kids to eat more types of fresh foods ........ part of the Coles Fresh 5 Challenge which encourages kids to eat all the Five Food Groups daily." Yeh, sure !?!

22.01.2022 As Victoria gets set to head back to school on Monday, some of our bodies might have changed. Our eating habits in iso might have changed. Teachers, your studen...ts bodies might have changed. Please don’t comment on their bodies or their lunchboxes. Teachers please don’t comment on your own weight to each other and especially not in front of the children. And parents, as you gather by the school gate, please don’t comment on your own or others’ weight. And yes jokes about jeans not fitting are being negative to our bodies. Our society tries to make us believe that what we weigh is indicative of our health status and it is not. Weight, health and eating all have multiple influences. They cannot be assessed by a simple glance and then compared to society’s incorrect ideas of health and body size. Now many of us would like our bodies to be different, heck I’d like to be taller, and that’s okay. It’s more about accepting our bodies (be positive if you want but neutral is just fine). Let’s try and focus on what our bodies can do (today mine cleaned the house and hugged my children) instead of what we wished they looked like. It’s hard and takes thought and general reminders to yourself. And please stop commenting that weight loss is a good thing (as it is not always) and that weight gain is a bad thing (it is not necessarily). I often think...how can we complement each other on things other than weight and external appearance? Maybe on our effort? On our kindness? What do you think? Do we want our children to be obsessed that their body’s are not right for them? Do we want them to change their bodies? Or do we want them to understand that we are all different and all look different. To be comfortable in their own skin? #bodyneutral #rolemodels #bodyimage #healthychildren #healthylifestyle #feedingchildren #foodeducation

22.01.2022 The assumption that when people carry extra weight, they are unfit needs to be debunked. For years we have known that being unfit is more harmful than higher amounts of body fat. Time to rethink the benefits of exercise for people of all weights!

16.01.2022 Vitamin D deficiency is common in Australians and many try to avoid the sun, which is our main source of this important vitamin. Now we know that exposing mushrooms to UV light for a short time can provide our daily requirement for Vitamin D. In fact, putting five button mushrooms in the sun for 10-15 minutes, or just one portobello mushroom, produces 24 g of vitamin D, which translates to nearly 1000 international units; the equivalent found in most vitamin D supplements.

09.01.2022 Ooh it is getting so hard these days :(

08.01.2022 While we know that the low FODMAP diet works for ~70% of people, there are a number of different studies out there that use lots of different types of diet as a... comparator. For example studies might use participants regular or ‘habitual diet’ to compare, or some have used the UK NICE guidelines which suggest eating small, regular meals and reducing alcohol/caffeine intake. A recent study looked at all of the available studies comparing the low FODMAP diet, to examine the effectiveness of the low FODMAP diet. 13 trials were included in their analysis which included 944 participants. There were a number of different ways the trials implemented the low FODMAP diet participants were either provided with all or most of their low FODMAP meals or were provided dietary advice. They found that the low FODMAP diet to be more effective at reducing overall IBS symptoms as well as individual symptoms such as abdominal pain and bloating. The authors noted that many of these trials are only looking at the first ‘low FODMAP’ phase of the diet, and that there is not as much surrounding the second ‘reintroduction’ phase of the diet. They also make note of the fact that these trials mainly make use of dietetic counselling, which is important for the success of the diet. Studies like this help grow the body of research surrounding the low FODMAP diet and what is best practice for individuals with IBS. If you are new to the diet, have a chat with your GP or dietitian to make a plan that’s best suited for you! Click the link to read more: https://gut.bmj.com/content/early//08/09/gutjnl-2021-325214
