10.01.2022 CARING FOR YOUR NEW CHICKS It is not difficult to successfully rear young chicks to laying hens if you take care to provide the correct feed and environ...ment. Your set-up can be as simple as a plastic storage tub with a spotlight right through to an aluminium custom-made brooder box with heat lamps. The internet contains a wealth of information and practical good ideas for raising chicks at home. BROODER BOXES In nature, young chicks rely heavily on their mother for warmth until they lose their down and develop adult feathers at about 6 weeks of age. If you are rearing chicks in a brooder box, you will need to use a thermometer for the first week or so to ensure that the temperature at chick height close to the heat source is 33 degrees C. You will know your chicks are too cold if they huddle together close to the light, and too hot if they spread out, far from the heat source, with wings held away from their bodies. Days 1 3 33C Days 4 - 6 32C Days 7 13 30C Days 14 20 26C Days 21 27 22C Days 28 35 20C Thereafter 20C at night as required Your brooder box should have shavings, cane mulch or paper towel on the floor so that it is easy to clean out regularly. Use paper towel over the shavings for the first 4 or 5 days so that chicks don’t eat the bedding. The box itself should be easy to clean and disinfect in between batches of chicks. Your heat source can be a simple old-fashioned light bulb or spot light (not halogen, fluorescent or energy saving) or you can buy a heat lamp from the reptile section of a pet shop. It needs to be mounted towards one end of the brooder box to allow chicks to move closer or further from the heat source in order to regulate their body temperature. If you are regularly rearing chicks you may be interested in buying a specialised heat mat or other form of non-light heat. FEEDING AND WORMING A messy bird feeder makes a cheap, ideal container for feeding young chicks. As they mature and require more food, poultry feeders of various sizes are a good idea. Water containers for young chicks should be shallow and narrow so that chicks cannot fall in and drown. A plastic butter container cut to 1.5cm high with pebbles placed in the bottom also makes a good water container for young chicks. Older birds can drink from any clean container and there are many balloon style waterers which store a few days worth of water at a time. Day 1 Dip beaks into water as chicks enter brooder, provide access to chick starter food on paper towel on floor and in messy bird feeder, provide fresh water in shallow dish. Week 1 6 Feed Chick Starter crumble in shallow tray and spread on kitchen paper for 2-3 days. Provide water in shallow dish. Week 6 18 Feed 16% protein Pullet Grower crumble. Adding Farmalogic Fancy Feathers to the food can boost bird immunity, fertility and bone strength. Week 7 Wormer Week 17 Wormer Week 18+ Feed Layer mash or Layer pellet (initially mixing with Pullet Grower and increasing proportion of Layer feed), scratch grain & house scraps. Bantams do not cope well with large size pellets. Choose pellets about the size of a grain of wheat. Sprinkle Farmalogic Rejuvenate probiotic powder over chicks feed to boost immunity and aid in gut development. Provide fine shell grit in a separate container. Always provide adequate clean, fresh water. Laying starts from 24 30 weeks depending on breed and time of year. Worm every 3-6 months or change of season. WHERE CAN I BUY FARMALOGIC PRODUCTS? Farmalogic Rejuvenate and Fancy Feathers are available through pet and produce stores throughout Australia and New Zealand. Ask for Farmalogic products wherever good bird and poultry feeds are sold! Message us or visit www.farmalogicglobal.com for more information.

07.01.2022 Laura from Geelong was having a terrible time helping her bantams through their moult in late autumn. I was thinking I might have to put them under lights like... the horses to have them ready in time for the show! she said. Laura decided to try adding Farmalogic Omega Balancer to her poultry feeds. Three weeks later and she is delighted with their colour in the show pen. I’m really loving the Omega Balancer, Laura told us. It has given my girls more of a gloss than normal which is awesome. Results from recent shows have been outstanding. Omega Balancer is my secret weapon at the moment! Laura laughed. Thanks for the feedback Laura, congratulations on your showing success, and sorry to let the cat out of the bag by sharing one of your secrets to success! FOR A LIMITED TIME, SAVE $15 off the price of Farmalogic Omega Balancer 2.8 kg at www.farmalogicglobal.com. Offer ends 10/6/19.
