I get many inquiries on repairing car subs and I knock back a good 80%, reason one parts are very hard to get and second most models make it very difficult to work on a bit like this one if I had to shim the voice coil there’s no dust cap to remove, the whole top dish is the dust cap, they are very hard to remove and sometimes break

20.01.2022 Kef IQ3 tweeter Sometimes I sit back laugh and shake my head on the pages when people recommend using vacuum cleaners to suck out dust caps and tweeters Now dust caps is fine but tweeters??? ... This customer got sucked into using a vacuum cleaner to pull out the dent in the dome, let’s say the sucking was very strong and sucked the dome right out of the magnet destroying the dome and coil.....so a bit of advice don’t get sucked into using a vacuum cleaner on domes because the end result will suck
20.01.2022 This is something pretty special to me A bit of history behind these speakers, a good customer of mine came to me years ago...probably close to 10 and wanted a good set of bookshelf speakers but couldnt find anything to his liking and what he did find was way over his budget. So....he pretty much got down on his knees and begged me to build him a set, lucky for him at that time i wasnt too busy so i folded and built him these speakers.... He wanted quality parts so we went through a few choices and at the end he just said....you pick it...i trust you So the reason they are here is that his Electrocompaniet class D amplifier went mental and maxed out the volume by itself so he just wanted me to check them over. So this was the result Scan Speak 18W/8546-01 6.5" woofer Satori Ring Radiator TW29R tweeter Second order hand built crossover with Solen 400v caps, 1.8mm winding on the woofer inductor and 1.2mm winding on the tweeter coil 50mm adjustable vent Specs, Freq response 30-18khz Resonance freq 43hz Crossover point, 2000hz 91dB
20.01.2022 Philips home made speakers with Plessey super tweeter I built the crossovers a little while ago, it was designed by someone, i followed the diagram and made them to match it The inductors were already glued on the boards so i just had to do the rest. My initial thought were the resistors, seemed quite high value, 20 ohm.... but i kept to the design... The owner brought the boxes in recently to have them fitted, i removed the old crossovers....or what ever it was and mounted the new boards First trial....sounded like an AM radio, flat, no life.....had a chat to the owner and recommended ditching the resistors, got go ahead. I bypassed the resistors and the tweeters came alive and the speakers came alive, after flicking through a few songs at reasonable levels i decided to fit a 5 ohm resistor just to take it down a notch Using Luxman L-81 amplifier

16.01.2022 Tannoy Arden Refoam and check over Found one woofer dead and other was playing Removed magnets and found both coils split, this was caused by using the speakers with deteriorated surrounds, note to everyone, dont use speakers with deteriorated surrounds, your asking for trouble... Replaced both coils and replaced surrounds Speakers back from the dead and sounding great once again See more
16.01.2022 Tannoy LSU/HF/15/8 I did a restoration on these about 8 years ago, it was new recone kits and customer requested baskets to be blasted and powder coated as all the paint was flaking off. Came in for a realignment of one of the drivers, was slightly poling. Removed magnet for voice coil inspection and all is good, no damage. Realignment can be easily done by undoing the nuts that hold the spider in place and using my signal generator.... 8 years later and they are still in great shape

12.01.2022 Celestion Ditton 15 Claim one woofer has slight distortion I didnt find too much wrong but i felt some internal corrosion in the voice coil gap as i pressed on the cone, i gave the speaker a good blast of sound and bass to shake it off, problem seems to be resolved... So its pretty much NOS as he never tried them, always been in storage Job refoam woofers and midranges

05.01.2022 Isophon Orchester 2000 12 coax Claim distorted sound Found strange vibration coming from centre of the speaker, eventually traced the fault to the tweeter voice coil which came unglued from the dome, this was quite hard to do as the speaker is built in a way that I can’t remove the coil to reattach to the dome outside of its magnet, after fixing it then another noise appeared in the low frequency which I traced to the rubber surround coming off the frame... All sorted now, a difficult job
