25.01.2022 One of the untold benefits of breastfeeding has now been exposed. Breastfeed to save the planet!

25.01.2022 MEASLES ALERT FOR BRISBANE NORTH SIDE Metro North Hospital and Health Service Public Health Unit has confirmed a case of measles in an adult male on Brisban...es north side. The man is believed to have contracted measles while travelling overseas. He was infectious from 16 December to 25 December whilst visiting the following locations: Felons Brewing Co at 5 Boundary Street Brisbane City (under the Storey Bridge) from around 5pm until midnight on Sunday 16 December. Oxford Street Bulimba, including Oxford 152, from around lunchtime on Wednesday 19 December. Eatons Hill Shopping Centre, including Woolworths, from around 4pm to 5:30pm on Thursday 20 December. The Prince Charles Hospital Emergency Department from 7:30 pm to midnight on Wednesday 19 December and from 5pm to 9pm on Friday 21 December. Metro North Hospital and Health Service are warning people who were in those areas at the same time as the man, to be wary of measles symptoms which include: fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough and sore and red eyes. This is followed a few days later by a blotchy, red rash which often starts on the face and then becomes widespread over the body. Measles symptoms usually start around 10 days after contact but can occur between seven and 18 days after contact with an infectious person. Contact your GP if you have been in these areas and have any of these symptoms - it is VERY important to call the medical practice first if you think you might have measles, so that staff can take precautions to avoid you spreading it to others. Further advice is available by calling 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84). (Note: image is not of diagnosed patient)

24.01.2022 Were proud to be a drop off point for Backpacks for Bushfires QLD! We know the kids who have been directed affected will be trying to gain a sense of normalcy ...in the coming week. There is so much that their families will be concentrating on, this is just one small part of trying to help them get back on their feet. @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia See more

23.01.2022 When to start giving your baby solid, and why? Here's a brief look at history and how it's influenced our behaviours.

21.01.2022 For an immune system to work properly, it needs to be confronted by an infection in the first year of life, says Greaves. Without that confrontation with an infection, the system is left unprimed and will not work properly. Parents are raising children in homes where antiseptic wipes, antibacterial soaps and disinfected floorwashes are the norm. In addition, there is less breast feeding of infants and a tendency for them to have fewer social contacts with other children. Both trends reduce babies contact with germs. Because young children are not being exposed to bugs and infections as they once were, their immune systems are not being properly primed.

20.01.2022 We are looking for a super star to join our team!

20.01.2022 "14% to 19% of all childhood leukemia cases may be prevented by breastfeeding for six months or more."

19.01.2022 Measles Alert The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service has confirmed a case of measles in a person on the Sunshine Coast. The person is believed to have... travelled from South East Asia by plane (TR 0221) to Brisbane while unknowingly infectious arriving Saturday morning at 9.35am. People who are known to have been in close proximity to the case are being contacted and provided with public health advice. The initial symptoms of measles include fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough and sore and red eyes. This is followed a few days later by a blotchy, red rash. The rash often starts on the face then becomes widespread over the body. Contact your GP or call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for more information. If you have any of the measles symptoms contact your GP and remember it is VERY important to call the medical practice first if you think you might have measles, so that staff can take precautions to avoid you spreading it to others. Anyone born after 1965 who was in these areas and who has not been fully vaccinated against measles (two doses of MMR) should contact their GP. (Note: image is not of diagnosed patient).

19.01.2022 Please be very careful with the use of teething gels in infants. Soothing your upset baby doesn't always have to start with medication. Here's 7 alternatives you may want to consider before using teething gels. 1. Cuddles! Cuddles can help to reassure your baby when they feel distressed. 2. Lightly massage your baby's gums with a clean finger or soft toothbrush to sooth and alleviate discomfort.... 3. Take your baby for a walk or to a park. 4. Cooling their gums with a clean damp washcloth placed in the fridge can be given to your baby to chew on, or cooled solid (not fluid or gel-filled) teething toy can work wonders by both numbing the area, and giving your baby something to chew on. If you're in a pinch, grab a silicon spatula from the kitchen and freeze that! It will be food-grade, which will put your mind at ease. 5. You can also freeze some breastmilk, formula or water as a popsicle as another way to apply cold relief to your child's gums. 6. If your baby is over 6 months of age, teething rusks, cold fruit and vegetables such as frozen mashed banana, ripe pear, strawberries in a mesh feeder or even carrot sticks may be a great teething aid. This should be supervised, in case your baby manages to break off a chunk and hasn't learned to coordinate their swallowing pattern with solid foods yet. 7. Excessive drooling can also cause the chin to become sore and irritated. Use of teething rings and food to sooth the gums can also increase drooling. Keep a dry towel or burp cloth handy to dry your baby's skin often enough to help prevent any rash or irritation, but not so often that you create any additional irritation. Consider applying a moisturiser such as a water-based cream or lotion. See more

19.01.2022 There are several safe alternatives to teething gels, so dont despair.

16.01.2022 Dr Helen is having an amazing time learning about the latest research from one of the most humble and open health care professionals, Dr Soroush Zaghi. Its such a pleasure spending the weekend with Bridget Ingle Ibclc and Cheree Wheaton updating on the latest research on paediatric sleep, breathing and tongue ties!

16.01.2022 How healthy is that star rating?

15.01.2022 Did you know Dr Helen had been volunteering in a not-for-profit organization that helps educate health professionals with the latest research across many different disciplines, so that we can all recognise and treat patients across all ages, comprehensively? https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=421031311945462&id=1907749622581979

15.01.2022 Is your baby a picky eater?

14.01.2022 About to start your baby on solids? Or are you still working on transitioning them through the various tastes and textures? Youll probably want to read this before you hit the baby food aisle!

14.01.2022 Yes, we are vaccinated! We do this to protect the babies and children we treat, because they arent always able to be immunised. And everyones safety is all our responsibility.

14.01.2022 Are you considering starting solids and wondering about baby-led weaning, self-feeding or spoon-feeding? No matter which you choose, let responsive feeding be your guide. "Some babies might not eat much at first when they self-feed, but dont worry. Remember, the experience of learning to eat is important too."

14.01.2022 Is releasing a tongue tie as an adult worthwhile? You be the judge!
