24.01.2022 practicing some moves

23.01.2022 I read this poem many years ago and everytime I go to a horse auction or see them advertised it reminds me of this poem and the old cowboy who started it all. ILL TROT FOR YOU Dont grab those reins...Continue reading

21.01.2022 He is concerned about the flag here, I just need him to realise that I am not attacking him with it, rather I need him to get used to it. One of the things that I want to get established here is that if he gets worried he is able to move forward and doesnt need to get stuck in place. The flag is an effective starting point to help the horse adjust to some of the things he will need to deal with during his life as a riding horse, which also helps to keep the rider safe. If he cant handle a flag on a stick then there is little point approaching him with a saddle blanket and saddle.

18.01.2022 Pont is a 7-year-old TB gelding. Prior to commencing working with Pont, I was told there had been an attempt at breaking him in, unsuccessful due to the saddle ending up underneath him. Consequently, he is worried about anything around his girth area or whenever there is pressure put on him to do anything. He can become quite explosive. Day one of breaking Pont, my main focus was on getting him to move around in a circle and getting him to move his hind quarter over. Also getting him used to the flag and getting him a little more desensitised whilst directing him. I think circles are a good place to start directing the horse. Directing and having them yield out and around you creates space between you and the horse. All too important if the horse gets worried about something and comes rushing towards you

16.01.2022 This is day 3, and Pont is getting better with the saddle, one of the things I like to do before getting on for the first time is to get the horse good with the stirrups waving around. Sometimes when a horse takes a jump or bucks it is easy enough to lose a stirrup and the movement can make things worse. I also like to put a bit of weight on the stirrup so that it moves the saddle a bit, and get them used to how that feels before stepping up onto the saddle.

16.01.2022 So this is day 5, I rode Pont the day before, but only briefly. This ride was only possible after a recap of the ground work that we had been doing the previous week. Todays ride was mainly about getting Pont moving forward and smoothing out transitions.

16.01.2022 This is some of the prep I did to get Pont ready for the saddle. Continuing to do circles, here I am using the lariat as I used the flag earlier, to help him adjust to the saddle and girth and not get too worried about what is going on around him. I used the rope around his girth area to help get him used to the girth of the saddle.

10.01.2022 LOOKING FOR PROBLEM HORSES We are looking to do a few problem solving instructional videos. If you have a horse where you have some issues that seem insurmountable then please contact us. In light of the fact that the horse is usually a small percentage of the presenting issue, you will need to be a confident and committed horse person who is willing to continue your own and your horses education.... Some horses may need to be vet checked or seen by other Specialists to rule out any physical issues pertaining to the presenting behavioural issue. Training will take place on our property. The only costs involved will be your horses feed should he need to stay with us for a few days and transporting him to us. Only natural horsemanship methods used. Please contact us to discuss further. See more

08.01.2022 This is day 2 of working with Pont. I have spent some time today getting him accustomed to a smaller saddle, focusing on getting him comfortable with that. Now it is time to reintroduce the stock saddle which is very similar to the saddle that ended up underneath him on a previous occasion. Naturally he is quite concerned and so I have done my best to make sure the same thing doesnt happen again. It is also important to say that the bucking is Ponts reaction to a sense of being trapped and not being able to move his feet. Part of the solution to this is to have him feel that he can move forward instead of bucking. Once he realises that he can move forward, it will help to overcome his anxiety.

04.01.2022 This is Pont last week, he is coming along nicely, he is quiet and confident to ride out on your own or in a group. Unphased by cars, trucks, motorbikes or sudden movements. He has progressed to a horse who is much more confident in himself and accordingly is not afraid to try new things. Credit to Cherrie and the people at Horses in Mind who are giving this guy the chance to be the best horse he can be.

04.01.2022 This clip demonstrates that if a horse is fearful of something it is very difficult to direct him, whether it be the flag, your legs or whatever you are using to drive your horse. Therefore I have to slow things down, let him check the flag out and try again.

01.01.2022 Before I ride I like to move the horse around on the ground first. Even a horse Ive ridden a hundred times, I make sure they are moving freely and sound before I put my foot in the stirrup.
