24.01.2022 I talk to a lot of people who find it hard to say no. No to their boss or teacher or parents, no to their partner, their children, their neighbours and relative...s. Here's the thing, saying no actually brings about more depth and connection with the person you say it to. Saying No can be a loving act that brings more authenticity and communication to a relationship. Not only is it great for us to practice setting healthy limits (because there is always a situation in which this gets really hard), it also helps others to feel more trust and confidence around us. For them its a sign of respect to tell them the truth. It also means they can feel freer to give their no and they will better understand and respect you. For both of you - well, this no is the gateway to a deeper level of connection and authenticity. Its the building of a skill that serves and opens up new possibilities in your negotiations. I set up Togetherness to help teach people the tools for more authentic, meaningful connection and more and more I realise that saying no is a foundational part of that. Tomorrow night I'm running a session on the joys of saying no (also 14 Sep) sign up here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/whos-the-boss-of-me-tickets-

20.01.2022 More than 82,000 people have come forward with sex-abuse claims against the Boy Scouts of America, describing a decades-long accumulation of assaults at the hands of scout leaders across the nation who had been trusted as role models. The claims, which lawyers said far eclipsed the number of abuse accusations filed in Catholic Church cases, continued to mount ahead of a Monday deadline established in bankruptcy court in Delaware, where the Boy Scouts had sought refuge this year in a bid to survive the demands for damages.

14.01.2022 This isn't just a "a matter for the police", it is a societal one. Those in power should be standing with and believing survivors not continue a culture of protecting accused perpetrators.

12.01.2022 CONSENT LAW REFORM - LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN - PLEASE SHARE The Queensland governments proposed changes to rape and sexual assault laws have been slammed by survivors and advocacy groups. The changes have been described as a huge disappointment and a slap in the face to survivors. They do nothing to address the serious problems in the current law.... Rape and Sexual Assault Research and Advocacy and Womens Legal Service Queensland have drafted amendments that would bring Queensland law into line with minimum standards in other states. We call upon the government to adopt these amendments and take meaningful steps towards real reform. #affirmativeconsent #reformqldconsentlaws

11.01.2022 Julie was pregnant and fearful of her repeatedly violent former husband when, in 2014, a Queensland police officer hacked into a confidential database, accessed her address and leaked it to the man. The officer, senior sergeant Neil Punchard, suggested in text messages that his childhood friend should let loose on Julie and fuck her over. This week, a Queensland court overturned Punchards conviction for computer hacking and imposed a lighter sentence.... The decision means he may keep his job as a frontline police officer a prospect that has shocked womens campaigners and domestic violence experts, who say it would shatter public trust in the Queensland police service and deter vulnerable women from seeking help.

06.01.2022 BRISSC phone support is changing! Historically the BRISSC phone line has operated from 9am 1pm, Monday to Thursday. From the 21st of September 2020, the phone lines will operate from 9am-12pm, Monday to Thursday. ... The phone line provides emotional support, advocacy, information and referral to women who have experienced sexual violence. It also offers support, information and referrals to friends and family members of survivors, male survivors and the wider community. BRISSC has implemented this change for the following reasons: 1. We have hired permanent phone workers which will enable callers to regularly connect with the same workers. This increases continuity of service for folks contacting the phone line. This aligns with feedback from BRISSCs recent service evaluation. 2. Employing additional staff to provide phone support enables BRISSC counsellors to offer an increased amount of face-to-face support and counselling. If you will be impacted by this change or would like to provide BRISSC with feedback, you can do so: 1. Via our website: https://brissc.org.au/contact/feedback-and-complaints/ 2. Or by calling our admin line on (07) 3391 2573.

05.01.2022 BRISSC is a member of the Queensland Sexual Assault Network - a statewide network of 22 sexual violence services. Together, with support from the UQ Pro Bono Centre, we have created a response to the recent QLRC review of consent and mistake of fact defence. QSAN believes that the opportunity has been missed to broadly assess the operation and practical application of current legislation that would improve the safety of women, encourage them to report to police and engage ...with the criminal justice system. Furthermore, that the recommendations do not address the failings of legislation and the criminal justice system that were actively raised in submissions from womens services and in consultation with victim/survivors and advocates. QSAN aligns with Womens Legal Service Queensland (WLSQ) and Rape and Sexual Assault Research and Advocacys (RASARA) recommendations for amending the QLRCs draft Criminal Code (Consent and Mistake of Fact) Amendment Bill 2020.
