11.01.2022 What Is An ATS? (aka Beating The Machine) The majority of large businesses that advertise jobs, and an increasing number of job sites use ATS Applicant Tracking Software, to screen applications as they come in. ATS software scan reads the resumes submitted and checks to see how suitable an application is by comparing key words used in the resume against the description for the job advertised. Resumes that are a solid match are then passed on to a human who will then filter ...those applications and begin the interview process. Resumes to fail to match the criteria of the position are automatically blocked, and generally the tell tale sign is you receive an email almost immediately informing you that you’ve been unsuccessful in your application. Blocked resumes never make it to an interviewer’s desk and, sadly, resumes can be blocked for a variety of reasons with the most common being that people fail to structure their resumes in a way that an ATS can clearly or easily read. Getting your resume to be taken seriously by an ATS is a big part of the service I provide, but here are some further do’s and don’ts to enhance your resume to help it get past an ATS. Key Words ATS software is looking for key words to determine if you’re a good fit for the role. If you’re applying for a particular job then look for the key words used in the job description and include them in your resume. Words such as creative, reliable, independently and passionate describe the qualities a company is placing value on so use them in your resume. The same goes for skills or qualifications if the job description names them then include them in your application. The Summary section in your resume is perhaps the best place to load up on key words. With this being said don’t go crazy with your key words use them wisely. It still needs to be readable to a human being once your resume clears the ATS. Spell Out Acronyms While an acronym may be common knowledge in your industry, it may not be what an ATS is looking for. So spell out acronyms such as AFA, CPA or ERP just to be safe. Avoid Lingo An ATS works against a dictionary of recognisable words so unless unusual words such as lingo or industry terms are explicitly added to it’s database it won’t know what that word is. Try to avoid these words where possible. Spell Check Be sure to spell everything that goes in to your resume. You may have the right skill set for a job but if you mis-spell your skills then an ATS may skip the error and you won’t score in the screening process. Don’t Use Graphics Or at least use them intelligently. While it may be tempting to use images in your resume to stand out from the crowd, an ATS won’t know the difference an in fact may be confused by an image file. The prettiest resumes often don’t make it past the front gate in the application process. #resume #ats #brisume
