20.01.2022 CLUTCH SKILLS in the MANUAL car Some basic "rules of thumb" will go a long way to saving the Clutch in a manual car. Here we go: 1. When the car is moving you have 5 seconds to get your foot on and off the clutch (except for manoeuvres) 2. In traffic the clutch is either up or down (no slipping except as above)... When traffic lights change you should be getting ready to go 2 secs before you are moving. In other words when you see the light go green ahead of you and if you expect to be going in 2 secs, bring the clutch to the friction point. DO NOT sit at the lights slipping the clutch for 30 to 60 secs. (this is very bad). Likewise at a roundabout, develop good judgement and see what is happening. Only bring the clutch to the friction point 2 secs before you intend to go. Continuous un-necessary clutch slippage will reduce the life of a clutch very significantly. I have never replaced a clutch in a Learner manual car and we practice clutch usage nearly every lesson. When you drive with us you will learn how to do this well and a whole lot more. To think that driving Instructors may promote poor clutch use is terrifying to consider. For a good overview of this subject watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hKvS6xTC0E

12.01.2022 READING TRAFFIC The roads have become extremely crowded and so the biggest problem for a road user is reading traffic and responding in a timely manner. Many of the drivers on the road write their own rules, so if you want to stay safe you need to drive carefully and be ready to avoid these drivers. The real skill comes in the ability to see the movement of other vehicles and predict the possible behaviour of those vehicles. For a simple example, a vehicle that is drifting... about in a lane, randomly touching the brake pedal may be a car to stay away from before they can cause you difficulty. For a tailgater, you can maintain constant speed and keep a control zone in front of you, or drop speed slightly and encourage them to tailgate another person. However it is not always simple; a car can pull out of a lane-way and leave you little time to respond, so in some places it is safest to drive below the speed limit so you do have time to respond. ( Drive to the conditions ) Learner Drivers often get caught out in a driving test simply because they haven't developed high level skills at reading traffic and responding. Driving frequently in diverse traffic situations, while a Learner with a Supervisor will help develop these skills and help you to be safer and perhaps pass a driving test one day. See more

05.01.2022 Reverse Bay Parking I was really impressed to see shoppers mostly reversing into bays today and in this instance they all did it well. When we get Learners for more than a couple of lessons we often get a chance to teach reverse bay parking. Many drives can end up at a shopping centre so why not learn to do the safest park and do it well. Well done Shoppers !
