25.01.2022 BRMC's Social Support group has grown to number about 140 participants who bring a wonderfully diverse and rich cultural heritage, representing 26 countries from the UK and Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America and Australia. Many of our Seniors are generous in sharing their personal stories and journey to make a new life in Australia. We are privileged to feature Lolita's story. LOLITA Lolita was born on the Negros Occidental island of the Philippines archipelago. She grew up ...close to the sea, and loves the sound of the waves still. She was part of a large extended family, and grew up speaking the local language Ilonggo, Tagalog (national language of the Philippines) and English at school. Lolita's mother was a very good cook: often dinner was a Filipino style spaghetti bolognese, seafood, fresh vegetable and curries. As a child, Lolita often went 'fishing' for mussels, clams and pipis. In 1985 Lolita met her partner ("my sweetheart") of 32 years, the Australian artist James Egan and she moved to Australia a year later. Lolita came directly to Bungaree where James had his art gallery. She helped him run the gallery in Bungaree for 20 years, after which they re-located the gallery to Addington. James painted Lolita often, she was his muse, he said. He enjoyed her cooking too. His favourite dish was Lolita's Chicken Arroz Caldo (chicken soup with rice - link to recipe below). A close second was Chicken Adobo (a signature dish of the Philippines, often cooked with pork - link to recipe below). 24.01.2022 This term we introduced a new class 'Literacy Through Art' and it has been exciting having a local and talented artist Pauline O'Shannessy-Dowling join our team.... This course is designed for people with low literacy and numeracy skills and whose first language may not be English. No art experience is necessary! You will be creating an art piece/mural to be displayed at the Ballarat South HUB building. Planning and creating the art project together will help learners expand their vocabulary, encourage discussion, improve their ability to give and take instructions and work in a team. Learners will increase their social interaction, learn new skills, and develop self-confidence by being involved in the art project. This will be a popular class in 2021. https://www.facebook.com/paulineoshannessydowlingartist

23.01.2022 - Vietnamese Herbs are Thriving - We have been fortunate to have received a number of donations from the community to get the Thrive pilot project established. One of those donations was from Dung Nguyen. You might know her through her cooking. She is the person behind the delicious Vietnamese Lemongrass Chicken and Pork Banh Mi at A Pot of Courage. Dung shared several herbs from her own garden with us, including Tía Tô and Diep Cá. Tía Tô (Perilla) has small leaves and has a... strong taste somewhere between mint and basil. It is used raw in soups, salads and meat dishes. It also has medicinal properties such as wound healing and to treat colds and flu. A Vietnamese friend recalls her grandmother preparing a steam bath infused with Tía Tô and lemongrass to treat head colds. Diep Cá (Fish mint) has trailing heart shaped leaves and a bold fishy flavour. It is used to enhance fish dishes and soups. When crushed, the leaves can be applied to sooth insect bites. These herbs are growing well in the Thrive garden and hopefully soon, you'll be tasting them in something wonderful from A Pot of Courage. If you would like to find out more about Vietnamese herbs you can follow this link to an SBS article: www.sbs.com.au//27/how-well-do-you-know-your-vietnamese-he We would also love to gather suggestions for herbs and vegetables that we might plant in a bigger garden that are important to your culture and cuisine. Thrive is a pilot fresh food growing program at BRMC supported by The Ballarat Foundation. You can contact us at [email protected]

This is what she has to say about her DHC experience: "I have recently won a certificate from MY Education Awards and a $50 book gift card. I highly recommend for other kids like me to continue reading and note your books on a reading log for the other teachers and educators to see your improvment and maybe win some certificates too... all of this is through the Zoom app. So, big thanks... for helping me learn all sorts of things that have helped me get to where I currently stand."
